Day 8: A Day of Serenity and Artful Discoveries on Naoshima
Explore Naoshima's hidden gems: Shihōzashi Tower, Yokobou Park, and unique dining experiences. A perfect blend of art, nature, and local flavors.
Island Escapes and Culinary Delights
Today was a day of exploration and relaxation, a chance to soak in the quieter corners of Naoshima, away from the bustling art museums. It was a blend of scenic views, tranquil parks, and delightful local cuisine. Lena and I embraced the slower pace, enjoying the simple pleasures the island had to offer. It was a welcome change of pace, reminding us that travel isn't just about ticking off famous landmarks, but also about savoring the moments in between.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at APRON CAFE. It’s a charming spot tucked away in Honmura Art Village. Finding it was a little adventure in itself, wandering through the narrow pedestrian alleyways. The cafe had a homely feel, with simple furniture and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The menu, designed by a nutritionist, featured locally sourced ingredients from the Setouchi region. I opted for the Seasonal Set Lunch, which included fried local Spanish mackerel, a Spanish-style omelette, and a medley of fresh vegetables. Lena chose one of their famous Happy Scones. It was the perfect way to start a day of exploring, filling us up with healthy and delicious food.

After breakfast, we decided to head to the Shihōzashi Sightseeing Tower. The tower promised panoramic views of Shodoshima Island and the Seto Inland Sea. The weather was warm, around 25°C, with clear skies, making it ideal for sightseeing. The tower itself wasn’t particularly crowded, allowing us to take our time and enjoy the scenery. From the top, we could see the sprawling landscape of Naoshima, with its rolling hills and the sparkling sea stretching out to the horizon. It was a great way to get a sense of the island's geography and appreciate its natural beauty. I took a few photos, trying to capture the vastness of the view, but as always, the real experience was far more immersive than any photograph could convey.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners, away from the main attractions.
Next on our list was Yokobou Park. We hopped on a local bus and made our way to the park, located a short distance from the tower. Yokobou Park is known for its serene beauty and is a perfect retreat for relaxation and nature exploration. As we strolled through the park, we were surrounded by lush greenery and the gentle sounds of nature. The park wasn't very crowded, which added to the sense of tranquility. Lena and I found a quiet spot to sit and simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. It was a welcome break from the more curated and intense art experiences we'd had earlier in the trip. We spent some time just talking and enjoying each other's company, surrounded by the calming presence of nature. It was a simple but deeply satisfying experience.

After our relaxing time at Yokobou Park, we decided to try our hand at fishing at the Naoshima Fishing Park. Neither of us are particularly experienced anglers, but we thought it would be a fun way to spend the afternoon. The park offers rental fishing rods and bait, making it easy for beginners like us to get started. We rented a couple of rods and found a spot along the pier. The staff were helpful, showing us how to bait the hooks and offering tips on where to cast our lines. We didn't have much luck initially, but after a while, Lena managed to catch a small fish. She was thrilled, even though it was just a little one. I, on the other hand, didn't catch anything, but I enjoyed the process nonetheless. It was relaxing to stand there, casting our lines and watching the water, even if the fish weren't cooperating. The fishing park also offered beautiful views of the surrounding sea, making it a pleasant place to spend the afternoon, regardless of our fishing success.

As evening approached, we made our way to Gumbo Hut Shioya for lunch. This Cajun restaurant is something of a hidden gem on Naoshima, known for its vibrant atmosphere and retro charm. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the warm ambiance and the sounds of classic American music from the 50s and 60s. The owner, Buddy, was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home. We both ordered the gumbo, which came highly recommended. It was rich, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying. It was a delightful culinary surprise in the middle of Japan. The restaurant itself had a unique vibe, with vintage décor and a cozy, inviting atmosphere. It felt like stepping into a different world, a little slice of Louisiana on a Japanese art island. We chatted with Buddy for a while, learning about his story and how he ended up opening a Cajun restaurant in Naoshima. It was a memorable dining experience, not just for the food but also for the warm hospitality and the unique atmosphere.

For dinner, we decided to try Yayoda, a seafood restaurant known for its fresh, local ingredients. The restaurant had a traditional Japanese setting, with a cozy and intimate atmosphere. We ordered a selection of seafood dishes, including sashimi, grilled fish, and tempura. Everything was incredibly fresh and flavorful, showcasing the best of what the Seto Inland Sea had to offer. The sashimi was particularly outstanding, melting in our mouths with each bite. The grilled fish was perfectly cooked, with a smoky flavor that complemented the delicate taste of the fish. It was a fitting end to a day of culinary exploration, highlighting the diverse and delicious food scene on Naoshima.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, we made a quick stop at the Lee Ufan Museum shop. The museum itself was closed for the day, but the shop remained open. I was hoping to find a unique souvenir to remember our visit. The shop offered a range of publications related to Lee Ufan, as well as original and specially selected goods. I ended up buying a handkerchief designed by the artist, a small but meaningful memento of our time on Naoshima. The shop was quiet and peaceful, allowing us to browse at our leisure. It was a nice way to reflect on the day and appreciate the art and culture that permeates every corner of this island.

As we walked back to our accommodation, Lena and I talked about our plans for tomorrow. We're planning to visit the Art House Project: Haisha and Shipyard Works By Shinro Otake. We might stop by One Rest. It sounds like the perfect way to wrap up our art-filled adventure on Naoshima. I'm particularly excited about seeing the Shipyard Works, as I've heard they're quite unique and thought-provoking.
Today was a reminder that travel is about more than just seeing famous sights; it's about embracing the unexpected, savoring the simple moments, and connecting with the local culture. Naoshima has a way of slowing you down and inviting you to appreciate the beauty that surrounds you, both in its art and in its natural landscapes. As we prepare for our final day on the island, I feel grateful for the experiences we've had and the memories we've created.
This evening, as I reflect on the day, I realize that Naoshima is more than just an art island; it's a place that nourishes the soul and inspires creativity. I am grateful for this experience that Lena and I got to share together.
I am looking forward to sharing tomorrow’s adventures with you all!
