A Day of Reflection and Departure

As our pilgrimage through Kumano Kodo draws to a close, today was a day of reflection, appreciation, and savoring the last moments in this enchanting region. Lena and I spent the day exploring cultural sites, enjoying the local cuisine, and mentally preparing for our journey back to Berlin. It's amazing how deeply this journey has resonated with both of us, and how much we've grown in just two weeks.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kumano Kodo Omotenashi-Kan. The traditional Japanese breakfast set us up perfectly for the day ahead, and the friendly staff made us feel incredibly welcome. It's these small, personal touches that really make a difference when you're traveling. I remember back in Foumban, my grandmother always said that a good meal sets the tone for a good day, and she was absolutely right. Lena particularly enjoyed the miso soup, while I couldn't get enough of the grilled fish. Fuelled up, we set out to immerse ourselves in the local heritage.

Our first stop was the Kumano Hongu Heritage Center. This modern facility provided an excellent overview of the Kumano region, its sacred sites, and the history of the pilgrimage routes. The exhibits were informative and well-presented, with English translations available, which was a great help. We learned so much about the cultural and spiritual significance of Kumano Kodo, and it deepened our appreciation for the journey we had undertaken. Lena, with her architect's eye, was particularly fascinated by the design of the center itself, noting how it seamlessly blended with the natural surroundings. I was struck by the stories of the pilgrims who had walked these paths for centuries, seeking solace and enlightenment.

Pilgrimage is about more than just reaching a destination; it's about the journey of self-discovery along the way.

After the Heritage Center, we decided to explore Third Place Kumano Kodo. This turned out to be a delightful surprise. It's an old farmhouse that has been renovated into a charming space that offers a glimpse into the traditional Japanese countryside. We were greeted by Mr. Tetsuyama, the owner, who was incredibly passionate about sharing the local mountain culture. He showed us around the farmhouse, explaining how he had preserved its authentic charm while adding modern amenities for the comfort of guests. Lena and I enjoyed a peaceful stroll around the property, taking in the serene atmosphere and admiring the antique decorations. It felt like stepping back in time, and it was a perfect way to connect with the local heritage on a more personal level. The farmhouse is located in Nonaka area near Tsugizakura-oji on the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route. Mr. Tetsuyama is an organic farmer with a diversity of crops. He wants his guests to feel at home--your personal third place on the Kumano Kodo.

For lunch, we headed to Onigajō cliff Center. The views from the cliff were absolutely stunning, and the rugged rock formations created by the sea were a sight to behold. We enjoyed a simple but delicious meal at the center, savoring the fresh seafood and local flavors. The cliff itself has a castle ruin dating back to the Age of Civil Wars, and a hiking path connects Kumanokodo and Matsumoto-toge. The observation deck gives a view of the entire Kumanonada Sea.

In the afternoon, we took a detour to Road Station Oku-kumanokodo Hongu to do some shopping. Road Station Oku-kumanokodo Hongu is roadside station in Tanabe. We picked up some local crafts and snacks for our friends and family back home. It was a great opportunity to support the local economy and bring back some tangible memories of our trip. I even found a small, hand-carved wooden bear that reminded me of the forests back in Cameroon. Lena bought some beautiful washi paper, planning to use it for her architectural models. It's funny how travel inspires us to find beauty in the everyday. The michi-no-eki building is larger that it appears and has a regular supermarket.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Hinoki Steak House for our farewell dinner. After weeks of traditional Japanese cuisine, we were both in the mood for something a bit different. The steak house came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. The Kumano beef was cooked to perfection, and the cozy atmosphere made for a memorable evening. We shared stories of our favorite moments from the trip, reminiscing about the stunning landscapes, the friendly locals, and the profound sense of peace we had found on the trails. We ordered the hamburger and steak set plus 2 x the seafood set.

Looking back, this pilgrimage has been more than just a physical journey; it has been a spiritual and emotional one as well. We have learned so much about ourselves, about each other, and about the world around us. The Kumano Kodo has a way of stripping away the distractions of modern life and allowing you to connect with something deeper. It's a feeling I know we will both carry with us long after we leave Japan. As we prepare to leave Kumano Kodo, I am reminded of a saying from my hometown:

The journey may end, but the memories will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back to Berlin. While I am excited to see our friends and family, I know that a part of me will always remain here, on the ancient trails of Kumano Kodo. This experience has enriched our lives in ways we could never have imagined, and I am grateful for every moment. Perhaps one day, we will return to walk these paths again, seeking solace and inspiration in this sacred place. Until then, I will carry the spirit of Kumano Kodo in my heart, wherever life takes me.

This marks the end of our Kumano Kodo adventure. It's been an incredible journey, and I'm so glad I could share it with you all. Thank you for following along, and I hope our experiences have inspired you to embark on your own pilgrimage, wherever that may lead. Safe travels, and may your paths be filled with wonder and discovery.
