Day 5: Con Dao's Charms: Hot Springs, History, and Heavenly Vegetarian Cuisine
Discover Con Dao's hidden gems: therapeutic hot springs, historical sites, and delightful vegetarian eats on a memorable family journey.
A Day of Serenity and Discovery
Today was a day of contrasts, blending relaxation with historical reflection and culinary delights. Con Dao continues to surprise me with its multifaceted appeal. It's not just a beach destination; it's a place where history, nature, and culture intertwine to create a unique travel experience.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Madame Hà - Vegetarian Cuisine. I've been trying to incorporate more plant-based meals into my diet, and this place was a fantastic find. Klara, always the early bird, had discovered it online and insisted we try it. Mateo, of course, was a bit skeptical, but even he found something he enjoyed – some delicious spring rolls. The restaurant itself was a peaceful haven, with a minimalist ambiance that set the tone for a relaxing day.

After breakfast, we decided to explore Sở Rẫy. This historical site offered a glimpse into Vietnam's past, and it was a sobering reminder of the island's role in the country's history. Wandering through the area, I couldn't help but reflect on the stories of those who had lived and suffered here. It's important to remember and learn from the past, and Sở Rẫy provided a poignant opportunity to do just that. The lush greenery and stunning landscapes surrounding the site offered a serene backdrop for contemplation. Mateo, surprisingly, was quite engaged, asking questions about the people who were imprisoned here. It sparked some great conversations about resilience and the importance of freedom.

Next on our itinerary was Bãi Suối Nóng, or Hot Springs Beach. The name comes from the hot spring at the source, with a temperature of 50°C. The kids were excited about the prospect of swimming in warm water. The short hike to the beach was an adventure in itself, with lush vegetation and the sounds of the jungle surrounding us. When we arrived, we were greeted by a beautiful white sandy beach and clear turquoise water. The hot spring itself was further inland, but the water that reached the beach was still pleasantly warm. Mateo spent a good hour building sandcastles, while Klara and I enjoyed a relaxing swim. It was the perfect way to unwind and soak in the natural beauty of Con Dao. I even managed to snap some photos, hoping to capture the ethereal mist rising from the warm waters, a scene that felt almost otherworldly.

For lunch, we indulged in some fresh seafood at Nhà Hàng Bến Cảng. This restaurant is known for its oceanfront views and its menu featuring the freshest local seafood. We sampled a variety of dishes, from grilled fish to shrimp stir-fries, all bursting with flavor. Mateo, who usually isn't a big fan of seafood, devoured a plate of grilled squid. Klara and I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and the stunning views of the harbor. It was the perfect spot to savor the flavors of Con Dao while enjoying the company of my family.

In the late afternoon, we decided to do some souvenir shopping. We stopped by Siêu thị đặc sản, quà lưu niệm côn đảo Hương Biển, a local specialty supermarket. I was on the hunt for some local crafts and delicacies to bring back home to Potsdam. We found a variety of interesting items, from dried seafood to local spices. Klara picked up some mứt hạt bàng (Con Dao almond jam), a local specialty. Mateo, of course, was drawn to the colorful displays of candies and snacks. I managed to find a few unique souvenirs that I think my friends and family back home will appreciate. The shop itself was a vibrant showcase of the island's unique flavors and craftsmanship.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to The Den for dinner. This restaurant had been recommended to us by some fellow travelers we met earlier in the week. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the menu featured a mix of Vietnamese and Western dishes. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese dish, while Klara went for a burger. Mateo, predictably, ordered pizza. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and relaxation.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to visit Mũi Cá Mập (Shark Cape) and the Vo Thi Sau Hero Grave. It will be another day of blending natural beauty with historical reflection. I am particularly interested in learning more about Vo Thi Sau, a local hero who played a significant role in Vietnam's fight for independence. I think it's important to understand the sacrifices that were made to achieve freedom and peace.
As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we've had today. Con Dao is a truly special place, and I'm so glad that we decided to come here. It's a destination that offers something for everyone, from pristine beaches and lush landscapes to rich history and vibrant culture. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and unforgettable travel experience.
On a side note, I realized today that I forgot to pack mosquito repellent and a waterproof backpack! Definitely adding those to the shopping list tomorrow. Hopefully, the local shops will have what we need. It's a good reminder that even the most seasoned travelers can make packing mistakes. But hey, that's part of the adventure, right?
