Island Reflections: Pagodas, Markets, and Sunset Dreams

Today was a beautiful blend of cultural immersion and sensory exploration here in Con Dao. I ventured into the heart of the island, seeking to understand its spirit and connect with its people. With Klara and Mateo by my side, every moment felt richer, more meaningful. It's amazing how travel can deepen our bonds and open our eyes to new perspectives.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at MAY BISTRO. The cozy atmosphere and delicious local fare set the perfect tone for what was to come. Fuelled up, we made our way to Van Son Pagoda, a serene sanctuary nestled on the slopes of Nui Mot Mountain.

The drive up to Van Son Pagoda was an experience in itself, winding through lush greenery with glimpses of the sparkling sea. As we approached, the pagoda's traditional Vietnamese architecture stood out against the backdrop of the mountain. The intricate carvings and graceful curved roofs were captivating, a testament to the island's rich Buddhist heritage.
Stepping inside, a sense of tranquility washed over me. The air was filled with the soft murmur of chanting monks, creating a surreal and peaceful ambiance. Mateo, usually a bundle of energy, seemed to sense the reverence of the place and grew uncharacteristically quiet, observing everything with wide, curious eyes. Klara, ever the architect, was fascinated by the pagoda's design, noting the harmonious blend of natural materials and spiritual symbolism.

Van Son Pagoda, also known as Nui Mot Pagoda, has a fascinating history. Originally built in 1964 during a tumultuous period, it served as a spiritual retreat. Later restored in 2011, it now stands as a symbol of resilience and devotion, attracting both pilgrims and tourists. As I stood there, taking in the panoramic views of Con Son Bay, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the island's past and present.

Travel is more than seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.

Leaving the serenity of Van Son Pagoda, we plunged into the vibrant chaos of Côn Đảo Market. This bustling hub is the heart of the island's commerce, a place where locals and tourists mingle amidst a colorful array of goods. The market was a feast for the senses, a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and smells. Stalls overflowed with fresh produce, glistening seafood, and fragrant spices.

Mateo was particularly fascinated by the seafood section, pointing at the various fish and crustaceans with glee. Klara, ever the practical one, haggled for the best prices on tropical fruits, her German bargaining skills coming in handy. I, on the other hand, was drawn to the local delicacies, sampling various street foods and soaking in the market's lively atmosphere.

We sampled some delicious deep-fried banana sticks, a local treat that Mateo couldn't get enough of. We also picked up some roasted terminalia catappa, or *bang* as the Vietnamese call it, a unique local specialty to take back home. It’s these small, authentic experiences that truly make a trip memorable. I was also on the lookout for gifts and souvenirs, finding some beautiful handmade jewelry and intricate wood carvings.

For lunch, we decided to try Nhà hàng Poulo Condore. The restaurant offered a wide range of Vietnamese and international dishes, and we opted for a selection of local specialties. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was relaxed and inviting. It was the perfect spot to recharge after our market adventure.

As the afternoon waned, we sought out the Sunset Lounge, perched atop The Secret hotel. This venue promised panoramic views of the sea, and it did not disappoint. Sipping on expertly crafted cocktails, we watched as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. The music was vibrant, the atmosphere was lively, and the views were simply breathtaking.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we made a final stop at Bar 200 - By The Beach for dinner. Located right on the shoreline, this restaurant offered a diverse menu of local and international favorites. We settled into comfortable bean bag chairs on the sand, enjoying the cool sea breeze and the sound of waves crashing against the shore. The food was delicious, the service was friendly, and the overall experience was simply magical. As someone who appreciates a good pizza, I can say that Bar 200's homemade pizza crust is definitely a highlight.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Con Dao's natural beauty, with a visit to Sở Rẫy and Bãi Suối Nóng. I’m also looking forward to trying the vegetarian cuisine at Madame Hà for breakfast. And perhaps, we will look for some souvenirs at Siêu thị đặc sản, quà lưu niệm côn đảo Hương Biển.

Today was a reminder of why I love to travel. It's about discovering new cultures, connecting with local communities, and creating lasting memories with my family. Con Dao is proving to be a truly special destination, a place where serenity and adventure intertwine. As I reflect on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences we shared and excitement for what tomorrow will bring. Good night from Con Dao!

I am so glad that Klara and Mateo could join me on this trip. It's always more fun when we are together. I am looking forward to what tomorrow brings!

I've really enjoyed the food here in Con Dao. It's so different from what we have in Potsdam. I think I will try to recreate some of these dishes when I get home.
