Today marked the beginning of our family's exploration of Con Dao, and it was a day filled with profound history and local flavors. As a mobile app developer specializing in tourism, I'm always looking for ways to connect people more deeply with the places they visit. Today, Con Dao revealed layers of its past, leaving a lasting impression on us all.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at The Secret Restaurant. The resort’s architecture is a blend of modern and French colonial styles. Klara, with her architect's eye, appreciated the renovated French colonial-era villa that houses the restaurant. The setting was lovely, and the breakfast buffet offered a great variety, setting us up perfectly for the day ahead.

Fueled and ready, we headed to the Bảo Tàng Côn Đảo (Con Dao Museum). The museum provided a comprehensive overview of the island's history and culture. The building itself had a unique architectural style, blending modern and classic elements. Inside, we explored the exhibits, which included artifacts, photographs, and interactive displays. The museum is divided into thematic areas, each presenting a well-curated collection of artifacts, photographs, and interactive displays. There were sections dedicated to the island's natural environment and its people, but the most impactful part was the tái hiện (re-enactment) of the island's dark past as a prison.

Leaving the museum, we carried a heavier understanding of Con Dao's past as we made our way to Côn Đảo Prison. This prison, established by the French colonists in 1861, held those deemed dangerous to the colonial government. Walking through the prison, we saw the infamous tiger cages, which were particularly disturbing. It was a chilling experience to imagine the suffering endured within those walls. The prison served as a stark reminder of the resilience and patriotism of the Vietnamese people.

After a morning filled with history, we were ready for lunch. We chose Con Son Seafood restaurant, enticed by the promise of fresh, local seafood. The restaurant was bustling with locals, which is always a good sign. We ordered several dishes, including the oyster porridge and shrimp with garlic butter, both highly recommended. The squid was incredibly fresh, with a delightful springy texture. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable, making it a fantastic value.

With our bellies full, we took some time to explore Côn Đảo Gift, a local shop offering a variety of locally crafted products. The shop was a celebration of the island’s culture and natural beauty. Mateo picked out a small, hand-painted wooden boat, while Klara found some handmade textiles. It was nice to support the local artisans and find unique mementos of our trip.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to have dinner at Infinity Cafe & Restaurant. The cafe had a charming ambiance with vintage decor. The menu featured a mix of Asian and European dishes. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese dish, while Klara tried one of the European options. While the food was good, we agreed that the atmosphere was the highlight.

The weather in Con Dao in December is pleasant, with mild temperatures. The humidity is relatively low, making it comfortable for outdoor activities. Today was no exception, with clear skies and gentle breezes, perfect for exploring the island.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Hòn Tre Lớn and Bãi Nhát, and perhaps enjoy a cocktail at On Cloud Nine Cocktail&Bar in the evening. It’s exciting to think about the natural beauty that awaits us. For now, it’s time to rest and reflect on the powerful history we encountered today.
