A Day of Discovery on Con Son Island

Today was a day of immersion – in history, culture, and the simple joys of island life. It’s amazing how much a single day can hold, especially when you’re open to every experience. Con Son Island, the largest in the Con Dao archipelago, revealed its layers to us, leaving me with a profound sense of connection to this unique place.

Our day began, as many do, with the promise of good food. We headed to Quán Ăn Tô for breakfast. It was a bustling little spot, filled with locals starting their Saturday, and the aroma of Vietnamese coffee and freshly cooked dishes filled the air. I opted for a traditional *bún riêu cua* [crab noodle soup], a flavorful and hearty way to kickstart the day. Klara went for a *bánh mì ốp la* [fried egg sandwich], while Mateo, ever adventurous, tried a sweet sticky rice dish. It's always a joy to see him embrace new flavors.

Fueled up, we set out to explore Con Son Island. Our first stop was one of the historical sites that mark the island. The Con Dao Islands have a dark past, having served as prisons during the French colonial era and the Vietnam War. Visiting these sites is a sobering but essential experience, a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. We decided to visit the Con Dao Museum to get a better understanding of the history. The museum provided a comprehensive overview of the island's timeline, from its early days to its role in Vietnamese history.

After the museum, we decided to explore the island a bit more freely, renting a motorbike to discover some hidden gems. The roads were quiet, the air was fresh, and the scenery was breathtaking. We drove along the coastal roads, stopping at viewpoints to soak in the panoramic vistas of turquoise waters and lush green hills. Mateo loved the feeling of the wind in his hair as we cruised along, pointing out every fishing boat and interesting rock formation we passed.

For lunch, we chose Nhà Hàng Bến Cảng, a seafood restaurant right by the harbor. The restaurant had a relaxing ambiance, and we were immediately drawn to the tanks displaying live seafood. We indulged in some of Con Dao's specialties, including grilled snails and fresh sea bass. The flavors were vibrant, the seafood incredibly fresh, and the setting idyllic. It was the perfect place to savor the tastes of the island.

In the late afternoon, with the sun beginning its descent, we found ourselves at Sea sense bar and grill. This spot was recommended by a local we met earlier in the day, and it did not disappoint. Perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean, the bar offered stunning views of the sunset. We sipped on cocktails as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. Mateo, with his usual boundless energy, built sandcastles on the nearby beach, while Klara and I simply sat and watched the spectacle unfold.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Nhà Hàng Cánh Buồm for dinner. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the menu featured a variety of Vietnamese dishes. We shared a hot pot, filled with fresh vegetables, noodles, and an assortment of meats and seafood. It was a comforting and satisfying meal, the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Six Senses Con Dao, a sustainable resort known for its commitment to environmental preservation and luxurious accommodations. Mateo is particularly excited about the prospect of spotting wildlife and learning about the local ecosystem. I’m looking forward to relaxing by the beach and perhaps indulging in a spa treatment.

Back at our guesthouse, I reflect on the day's experiences. Con Son Island has a way of captivating you, of drawing you into its stories and rhythms. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine, where the simple act of watching a sunset can feel profound. As I drift off to sleep, I’m filled with gratitude for this day of discovery and anticipation for what tomorrow may bring.

It is worth noting that December is considered the windiest period in Con Dao. While this might limit some water activities, the cooler temperatures make land-based exploration more comfortable. Also, there are several cultural events and activities taking place in Con Dao during this time, including walking tours and art programs.
