Solo Expedition to Yakushima: Embracing Nature's Serenity
Day 4: Ancient Cedars and Tropical Delights: A Day of Discovery in Yakushima
Explore Yakushima's majestic Meoto Sugi and indulge in tropical fruits at Papaya no Sato, savoring local cuisine and island vibes.
Whispers of the Ancients, Tastes of the Tropics
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the solemn reverence of ancient forests with the vibrant, playful flavors of tropical fruits. Yakushima continues to surprise me with its diverse offerings, proving that this island is more than just a hiking destination; it's a place where nature's grandeur meets simple, joyful experiences.
My day began, as usual, with a hearty breakfast at Smiley. This cozy little cafe near Anbo Port is quickly becoming my go-to spot. I opted for their homemade soup and an English muffin sandwich, fueling up for the day's adventures. The owner, always cheerful, sent me off with a big smile and a 'ganbatte kudasai!' (do your best!).
First on the agenda was a visit to Meoto Sugi. The name translates to 'Couple Cedars,' and it's easy to see why. These two ancient Yakusugi cedars stand side-by-side, connected by a branch high above the ground. It's a heartwarming sight, like an old couple holding hands. The air was crisp and clean as I walked along the well-maintained trails, surrounded by the towering trees. The forest floor was a carpet of moss and ferns, creating a serene and almost mystical atmosphere. It’s amazing to think these trees have been standing for over a thousand years, silently witnessing the passage of time. They’ve certainly seen more than my fair share of financial spreadsheets!

I spent a good hour simply wandering among the cedars, taking in the scale and grandeur of nature. It’s humbling to be in the presence of something so old and majestic. I couldn’t help but think about Isabella and Sofia. I imagined them walking beside me, their eyes wide with wonder. I made a mental note to bring them here someday; this is an experience they shouldn't miss.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet whispers of ancient forests and the simple sweetness of tropical fruits.
From the serene forest, I headed to a completely different experience: the Yakushima Fruit Garden - “Papaya no Sato”. This charming attraction is a celebration of tropical fruits from around the world. As I drove towards Nakama, I followed the signs that led me to what felt like a hidden jungle path. I paid the entry fee at a small, Bali-style shack and was greeted by a local guide.

The tour was fascinating, even though there was a bit of a language barrier. The guide, an elderly gentleman with a twinkle in his eye, led me through the lush garden, pointing out various fruit trees and plants. There were bananas, mangoes, papayas, guavas, and many more. It was amazing to see these fruits growing in their natural environment. The air was filled with sweet scents, and the atmosphere was wonderfully tropical. I learned about the different varieties and their unique characteristics. I even got to taste a few samples straight from the tree – the flavors were incredibly fresh and vibrant.
The tour ended with a generous fruit platter. I sat at a picnic table, savoring the sweet and tangy flavors of the island. It was a delightful experience, a true taste of Yakushima's bounty. I even bought some guava jam to take back home – a little taste of the tropics to brighten up my Toronto mornings.
For lunch, I decided to try Il Mare, an Italian restaurant near the airport. I was in the mood for something different, and the reviews I read online were promising. The restaurant is cozy and welcoming, with a charming Italian ambiance. I ordered a pizza with Yakushima black pork sausage, a local specialty. The pizza was delicious, the crust perfectly crisp and the toppings bursting with flavor. It was a delightful fusion of Italian cuisine and local ingredients.

After lunch, I took a leisurely stroll around the area, enjoying the views of the sea and Tanegashima in the distance. It was a perfect way to relax and digest after a satisfying meal. Il Mare is definitely a place I'd recommend to anyone looking for a taste of Italy in Yakushima.
As the sun began to set, I made my way to SamPotei for dinner. This modern izakaya is known for its vibrant atmosphere and exquisite local flavors. The restaurant is located by the river, offering beautiful riverside views. I sat on the open-air terrace, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the gentle sounds of the water.

I ordered a selection of small plates, sampling a variety of Japanese, Mediterranean, and Asian-inspired dishes. The food was fresh and flavorful, showcasing the best of Yakushima's seasonal ingredients. The staff was friendly and attentive, making me feel right at home. I particularly enjoyed the grilled skewers and the local sashimi. To complement my meal, I tried a glass of local sake, perfectly paired with the flavors of the dishes.
After dinner, I decided to check out Ambar, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and extensive drink menu. It was the perfect place to unwind after a long day of exploring. I ordered a local craft beer and chatted with some of the other patrons, learning more about the island and its culture. It was a great way to end the day, soaking in the local vibes and enjoying the company of new friends.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to visit the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall and the East China Sea Observatory. I'm also planning to grab breakfast at Michikusa, lunch at Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan, and dinner at Subarashi Indian Restaurant. And, of course, I can’t forget to stop by Yakushima Gelato Sora-Umi for a sweet treat [chuckles].
Today was a reminder of why I love solo travel. It allows me to immerse myself in new experiences, connect with nature, and discover hidden gems along the way. Yakushima is a truly special place, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore its beauty and serenity. I am also grateful for the opportunity to reflect on my life back in Toronto, and to remember what is truly important: family, friends, and the pursuit of happiness.
