A Day of Turtles and Tranquility

Today was a day dedicated to the serene coastal beauty and fascinating marine life of Yakushima. Leaving behind the towering cedars for a day, I set out to explore the island's shores and learn more about its sea turtle conservation efforts. It was a day of gentle breezes, salty air, and a deeper connection with the natural world, a welcome change of pace from the dense forests.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Michikusa. I opted for a traditional Japanese set menu, which included grilled mackerel, rice, miso soup, and a variety of small, pickled vegetables. It was a comforting and energizing way to start the day, fueling me for the adventures that lay ahead. The cozy atmosphere of the restaurant and the friendly locals made it a delightful experience, reminding me of the warm hospitality I often find in small Colombian eateries back in Toronto.

After breakfast, I headed to the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall. This small museum is dedicated to educating visitors about sea turtles and the conservation efforts in place to protect them. I was immediately impressed by the passion and knowledge of the staff. The manager provided clear and engaging explanations about the life cycle of sea turtles, their habitats, and the threats they face. I learned that Yakushima is one of the most important nesting sites for loggerhead sea turtles in the world.

The museum had interactive displays and exhibits, including a chance to see baby turtles up close. It was heartwarming to see these tiny creatures, knowing the challenges they face in their journey to adulthood. The dedication of the staff towards protecting these beautiful animals was truly inspiring. It reminded me of the importance of conservation efforts and how every small action can make a difference. I purchased a few postcards with adorable sea turtle pictures as a memento of my visit and a contribution to their conservation work.

The ocean is a vast and mysterious world, and it is our responsibility to protect its inhabitants.

Next on my itinerary was the East China Sea Observatory. The drive there was scenic, winding along the coast with glimpses of the turquoise water. As I emerged from a tunnel, a panoramic view of the East China Sea unfolded before me. The observatory offers a breathtaking vista of the coastline, with the vast expanse of the sea stretching out to the horizon. On a clear day, you can even see the volcanic islands of Kuchinoerabujima, Kuroshima, and Iwojima in the distance.

I spent some time at the observatory, simply soaking in the view and feeling the sea breeze on my face. It was a moment of pure tranquility, a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and connect with the natural world. The view reminded me of the coastal landscapes of Colombia, although the volcanic islands added a unique touch to the scenery.

For lunch, I stopped at Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan. This market and restaurant offers a variety of local products and dishes. I decided to try their homemade curry, a comforting and flavorful dish that was perfect for a midday meal. The market was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively and vibrant atmosphere. I enjoyed browsing the local produce and crafts, picking up a few souvenirs for Isabella and Sofia. I know they'll appreciate the small tokens from my adventure.

After lunch, I decided to treat myself to some gelato at Yakushima Gelato Sora-Umi. This charming shop is known for its gelato made from local fruits and ingredients. I opted for the tankan orange and guava flavors, both of which were absolutely delicious. The gelato was refreshing and flavorful, a perfect way to cool down on a warm afternoon. The shop itself was cozy and inviting, with a small seating area where I could relax and enjoy my treat. I learned that the owners take pride in using only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients, a testament to their commitment to quality and sustainability.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Subarashi Indian Restaurant for dinner. It might seem odd to have Indian food in Japan, but I had heard good things about this place and was curious to try it. I ordered a vegetarian curry, specifying that I wanted it vegan, and was not disappointed. The curry was flavorful and satisfying, with a perfect blend of spices. The service was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. It was a pleasant surprise to find such a gem on this remote island. I couldn’t help but think how Sofia would enjoy the naan bread; she's always been a fan of Indian cuisine.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I took a leisurely stroll along the beach, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the sound of the waves. The stars were beginning to appear in the sky, creating a magical and peaceful atmosphere. I reflected on the day's experiences, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful island and connect with its natural wonders. It was a day of simple pleasures, reminding me of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the beauty that surrounds us.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse and the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore. I am looking forward to learning more about the island's history and culture, and to discovering more of its hidden gems. I also plan to visit Seirios, a local bar, in the evening to unwind and enjoy the local nightlife.

As I prepare for another day of exploration, I am filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation. Yakushima continues to surprise and delight me, and I am eager to see what tomorrow brings. For now, I will rest and recharge, ready to embrace another day of adventure in this enchanting island paradise.

I’m also making a mental note to purchase insect repellent and sunscreen tomorrow, as I completely forgot to pack them. It seems like even the most seasoned travelers can have their oversights. Good thing is, I’m sure I can find them at a local store.
