Solo Expedition to Yakushima: Embracing Nature's Serenity
Day 9: Summiting Yakushima: A Day Among the Clouds
Conquering Mt. Miyanoura and exploring Yakushima National Park. A day of breathtaking views and serene moments amidst nature's grandeur.
Reaching for the Sky
Today was the day I tackled Mt. Miyanoura, the highest peak in Yakushima and indeed, all of Kyushu. The anticipation had been building since I first set foot on this magical island. I knew it would be a challenging climb, but the promise of panoramic views and the chance to immerse myself in the heart of Yakushima National Park was too enticing to resist. The day unfolded as a symphony of natural wonders, cultural flavors, and personal reflections.

My day began with an early breakfast at Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. I wanted to fuel up properly for the hike ahead. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and I enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with miso soup, grilled fish, and rice. It was the perfect start to a day that would demand both physical and mental strength. I even picked up a small Yakusugi wooden charm from their souvenir shop, hoping it would bring me luck on my ascent. It’s funny how a little piece of wood, crafted with such care, can feel like a tangible connection to the island’s ancient spirit. I am not usually one for souvenirs, but I felt like I needed to have something to remember this magical place.

The hike up Mt. Miyanoura is no joke. The trail is steep and winding, and the air is thick with humidity. But every step was worth it. The scenery was simply breathtaking. Towering Yakusugi cedars, some over a thousand years old, lined the path, their gnarled branches reaching towards the sky. Sunlight filtered through the canopy, creating an ethereal glow that made me feel like I was walking through a sacred space. I encountered several other hikers along the way, each with their own story and purpose for being there. We exchanged smiles and words of encouragement, united by our shared appreciation for the mountain’s beauty. The hike itself is considered to be a level 5 for physical strength and a level D for difficulty.
In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.
Around midday, I stopped for lunch at Shiosai in Miyanoura. I was craving something light and refreshing, and their mackerel sashimi hit the spot. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the simple flavors were a welcome change from the richer meals I had been enjoying. Shiosai is known for its fresh, local seafood. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the island’s culinary delights. I overheard snippets of conversations in various languages, a testament to Yakushima’s growing popularity as a travel destination. The staff were very kind and accommodating.

Continuing my trek, I eventually reached the summit of Mt. Miyanoura. The view from the top was absolutely stunning. The entire island stretched out before me, a tapestry of green forests, rugged mountains, and sparkling coastline. Clouds swirled around the peak, creating a sense of being on top of the world. I spent a long time simply taking it all in, feeling a profound sense of accomplishment and gratitude. It was a moment I will never forget. I could see the effort it took to get to the top was well worth it. I made sure to take many pictures, even though I knew they could never fully capture the experience.
As I descended, I made a stop at Gramoon, a local shop known for its unique crafts and souvenirs [see search]. I wanted to find a special memento of my time on Yakushima. The shop was filled with beautiful objects, from intricate wood carvings to delicate pottery. I ended up buying a small, hand-painted ceramic bell, its gentle chime a reminder of the island’s peaceful atmosphere. I also picked up some Yakushima green tea, hoping to bring a taste of the island back home to Isabella and Sofia.

For dinner, I decided to try Kamogawa Restaurant in Anbo. I had heard that they served excellent local dishes, including flying fish, a Yakushima specialty. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I ordered the flying fish set meal, which came with a variety of side dishes, including miso soup, rice, and pickles. The flying fish was delicious, with a delicate flavor and a crispy texture. It was the perfect way to end a day of hiking and exploration. The restaurant is known for offering a variety of high-quality local fish and Japanese dishes. They also offer bento boxes that are bamboo-leaf wrapped.

As I reflect on today's adventure, I am filled with a sense of deep satisfaction. Conquering Mt. Miyanoura was a personal challenge, and I am proud of myself for pushing through the physical and mental barriers. But more than that, I am grateful for the opportunity to experience the natural beauty and cultural richness of Yakushima. This island has a way of getting under your skin, of touching your soul in a way that few other places can. It is a place where you can reconnect with nature, challenge yourself physically, and find a sense of inner peace. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings as I plan to visit Inakahama Beach and Yakushima South Village [see tomorrow's itinerary]. I am looking forward to seeing the sandy beaches and learning more about the culture of this amazing island.
