Nature's Embrace: A Day of Coastal and Waterfall Wonders

Today was a day where Yakushima truly showcased its raw, untamed beauty. From cascading waterfalls to serene coastal roads teeming with wildlife, it was an experience that resonated deeply with my soul. It was a reminder of why I embarked on this solo journey in the first place – to reconnect with nature and find peace in its embrace.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at At Pesca. The vibrant island beach decor and the promise of fresh bentos made it an irresistible choice. I opted for a hearty bento box filled with local delicacies. The tempura was perfectly crispy, and the momo chicken drizzled with teriyaki sauce was simply divine. It was the perfect fuel for the day's adventures ahead. Sipping on a refreshing passion fruit juice, I felt ready to take on whatever Yakushima had in store for me.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to Ohko Waterfall. The drive itself was a treat, with lush greenery enveloping the roads. As I approached the waterfall, the air grew cooler and the sound of rushing water filled the air. It's located past Kurio Village at the entrance of Seibu-rindo Forest Path. Ohko Waterfall is considered one of Japan's best 100 waterfalls.

The short walk from the parking area to the viewing platform was an easy one. The closer I got, the more the roar of the water intensified, and a fine mist kissed my face. Then, finally, I saw it – Ohko Waterfall in all its glory ! The water cascaded down from a height of 88 meters, creating a truly majestic spectacle. The sheer power and beauty of the waterfall were overwhelming. I spent a good while simply standing there, mesmerized by the sight. The cool spray was incredibly refreshing, especially given the humid August air.

Nature's beauty is a gift that reminds us to appreciate the simple wonders of the world.

After soaking in the awe-inspiring view of Ohko Waterfall, I continued my journey to the World Heritage Listed Coastal Road with Wildlife. This road, also known as Seiburindou, promised not only stunning coastal scenery but also the chance to encounter some of Yakushima's unique wildlife.

As I drove along the narrow, winding road, I was immediately struck by the panoramic ocean views. The azure sea stretched out before me, meeting the dramatic cliffs and the emerald-green canopy of the forest. It was a visual feast, and I found myself stopping frequently to capture the breathtaking vistas.

It wasn't long before I encountered the stars of the show – the Yakushima macaques and the Yaku sika deer. These creatures, unique subspecies found only on Yakushima, roamed freely along the roadside. The monkeys were particularly playful, swinging through the trees and foraging for food. I watched in amusement as they interacted with each other, their antics bringing a smile to my face. The deer, on the other hand, were more serene, grazing peacefully in the undergrowth. I made sure to keep a respectful distance, remembering that these were wild animals in their natural habitat.

The coastal road itself was a marvel, winding through ancient cedar trees that formed a magical forest setting. The air was filled with the sounds of nature, creating a serene and peaceful ambiance. I felt a deep connection to the island's ecological significance, appreciating the delicate balance of this unique ecosystem.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Anbo for dinner. Tonight, I had made a reservation at a heavenly kitchen. This restaurant is known for its use of local Yakushima produce. The restaurant only accepts one group per day and requires reservations. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared, showcasing the best of the region's vegetables. The flavors were vibrant and fresh, and I left feeling nourished and satisfied.

To cap off the evening, I decided to visit Fisherman's Bar NINA. This bar is known for its fresh seafood and relaxed atmosphere. The chef is also a fisherman. I enjoyed a few drinks while chatting with some locals, soaking in the island's laid-back vibe. It was the perfect end to a day filled with natural splendor.

Tomorrow, I plan to ascend Mt. Miyanoura. I've heard that the views from the summit are unparalleled, and I'm eager to challenge myself physically and mentally. Before that though, I'll grab breakfast at Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. It promises to be another day of adventure and discovery, and I can't wait to see what Yakushima has in store for me.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible island. Yakushima has a way of stripping away the noise and distractions of everyday life, allowing you to connect with something deeper within yourself. It's a place where you can truly be present, appreciating the beauty of the natural world and finding peace in its simplicity.

I'm reminded of my family back in Toronto, especially Sofia's fascination with nature documentaries. I can't wait to share my stories and photos with them, hoping to inspire their own adventures one day. Perhaps we'll even plan a trip back here together, creating memories that will last a lifetime. For now, though, I'm content to savor these moments of solitude and self-discovery, embracing the serenity of Yakushima and letting its magic work its wonders.

Before I turn in for the night, I plan to jot down some notes in my travel journal, capturing the essence of today's experiences. I also need to charge my portable charger, as I foolishly forgot my insect repellent and sunscreen, and I don't want to forget to get them tomorrow. It's the little things that make a big difference when you're out in nature, and I'm learning to be more mindful of my preparations. With that, I bid you goodnight from Yakushima, a place that has truly captured my heart.
