Adieu, Fes!
As my time in Fes draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I’ve undertaken these past nine days. It’s hard to believe it’s already over; it feels like just yesterday I was stepping off the plane with Sophie and the others, eager to immerse myself in the heart of Moroccan culture. Now, as I prepare to leave, I’m filled with a mix of gratitude and a tinge of sadness, knowing I’ll soon be back in Montreal, trading the vibrant chaos of the medina for the familiar rhythm of city life.

Our last day in Fes was a fitting culmination of our adventures, a final chapter filled with exploration, delicious food, and moments of genuine connection. It started, as many of our mornings did, with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Clock. I’ve grown quite fond of this place; it’s more than just a café, it's a cultural hub where locals and travelers mingle, sharing stories and experiences over steaming cups of mint tea. Today, I opted for the traditional Moroccan pancakes, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with sesame seeds – a sweet and satisfying start to the day. Sophie, ever the adventurous one, tried the camel burger, a Cafe Clock specialty. She said it was surprisingly delicious, though I think I’ll stick to the pancakes for now. I am not that adventurous when it comes to food.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we set out to explore some of the city’s remaining gems. First on our list was Borj Sud, a historic fort perched on a hill overlooking the sprawling medina. The climb to the top was a bit of a trek, but the panoramic views were well worth the effort. From our vantage point, we could see the entire city stretching out before us, a sea of rooftops and minarets bathed in the warm morning light. It was a breathtaking sight, a reminder of the rich history and vibrant culture that permeates every corner of Fes.

As I gazed out at the city, I couldn’t help but think of my grandfather, the skilled carpenter back in Huancavelica. He would have been fascinated by the intricate craftsmanship and the enduring legacy of Fes, a city that has preserved its traditions for centuries. I made a mental note to share my photos and stories with Mateo when I return to Montreal; I want him to understand and appreciate his Peruvian heritage, as well as the beauty and diversity of the world beyond our doorstep.

From Borj Sud, we made our way to the Nejjarine Fountain, a hidden oasis tucked away in the heart of the medina. This exquisite fountain, adorned with intricate mosaics and elaborate carvings, is a testament to the artistry and skill of Moroccan artisans. The sound of trickling water created a serene atmosphere, a welcome respite from the bustling streets outside. We paused for a moment to admire the fountain’s beauty and to soak in the tranquil ambiance, a perfect reminder of the importance of finding peace amidst the chaos of everyday life.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments, in the quiet corners of a bustling city, where history and culture intertwine to create a tapestry of beauty and wonder.

Afterward, we strolled through the Nejjarine Square, a vibrant hub of artisan workshops and local eateries. The air was filled with the sounds of hammering, chiseling, and the lively chatter of merchants and customers. I was particularly drawn to the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts and Crafts, housed in a beautifully restored fondouk, or traditional inn. Although we didn't go in, just admiring the building's facade, with its intricate woodwork and zellij tilework, was a treat. I could imagine the weary travelers of centuries past seeking refuge within its walls, finding respite from their long journeys.

As we wandered deeper into the medina, we encountered the Mules of the Medina, a common sight in this ancient city. These hardworking animals are an essential part of daily life in Fes, transporting goods through the narrow, winding streets that are inaccessible to cars. Watching them navigate the bustling crowds with their heavy loads was a fascinating glimpse into the city’s traditional way of life. Sophie, ever the animal lover, couldn’t resist snapping a few photos of the mules, marveling at their strength and resilience. She was quite impressed to see how well they were taken care of.

For lunch, we decided to try La Kasbah de Fes, a restaurant recommended by our friend Fatima, who lives here in Fes. The restaurant was charming, with traditional Moroccan decor and a cozy atmosphere. We ordered a selection of dishes to share, including couscous, tagine, and a variety of salads. The food was delicious, a flavorful blend of spices and fresh ingredients that tantalized our taste buds. However, I must admit, the service was a bit slow, and the prices were a tad higher than expected. Perhaps it was just an off day, but it was the only slight disappointment we encountered during our culinary adventures in Fes.

In the afternoon, we indulged in some last-minute shopping at La Petite Maison Berbere, a charming rug store nestled in the heart of the medina. I’ve always been fascinated by Moroccan carpets, with their intricate designs and vibrant colors. The staff were incredibly helpful, sharing the stories behind each rug and guiding us through the different styles and patterns. I ended up purchasing a small Berber rug for our living room in Montreal, a memento of our time in Fes that will add a touch of Moroccan warmth to our home. I can’t wait to show it to Mateo; I know he’ll love the intricate designs and the vibrant colors.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to a farewell dinner at Restaurant Soultana, a place I had read about online. This restaurant is known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and its stunning riad-like setting. From the moment we stepped inside, we were transported to another world, surrounded by intricate architectural details and a magical atmosphere. The staff were incredibly hospitable, making us feel like honored guests. We ordered a feast of traditional dishes, including tagine chicken with olive and lemon and pastilla with tajine kabab mghdour. The food was exquisite, a symphony of flavors that danced on our palates. And to top it all off, there was live music, adding to the enchanting ambiance of the evening.

After dinner, we decided to experience a bit of Fes’s nightlife at Eden Chope Bar. I am not much of a bar person, but I wanted to experience it all. It was a small, cozy spot with a relaxed atmosphere. We enjoyed a couple of drinks, chatted with the friendly locals, and soaked in the vibrant energy of the city one last time. It was the perfect way to end our final day in Fes, a moment of camaraderie and celebration that I’ll cherish for years to come.

As I sit here now, packing my bags and preparing for our departure, I can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the incredible experiences I’ve had in Fes. This city has captured my heart with its rich history, vibrant culture, and the genuine warmth of its people. I’ve learned so much about Moroccan traditions, cuisine, and artistry, and I’ve made memories that will last a lifetime. I am so happy I got to experience it with Sophie and our friends.

While I’m excited to return to Montreal and to see Mateo and share my stories with him, I know that a part of me will always remain in Fes. This city has a way of getting under your skin, of captivating your senses and leaving you longing for more. I have no doubt that I’ll be back someday, eager to explore more of Morocco’s hidden gems and to reconnect with the friends I’ve made along the way.

For now, it’s time to say adieu to Fes. But as I bid farewell to this enchanting city, I know that its spirit will continue to inspire me, to remind me of the beauty and diversity of the world, and to encourage me to embrace every adventure with an open heart and a curious mind.

Tomorrow, we fly back to Montreal, our hearts full of memories and our bags full of souvenirs. It’s the end of our Moroccan adventure, but the beginning of a new chapter, filled with the promise of sharing our experiences with loved ones and planning our next great escape.
