Exploring Kyoto's Historical Wonders with Friends
Day 11: A Farewell to Kyoto: Reflecting on History and Heritage
Join me on the final day of my Kyoto adventure as I explore the Railway Museum and Shogunzuka Mound, savoring every last moment.
Kyoto's Lasting Impressions
As my journey through Kyoto draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible blend of history, culture, and beauty that this city has offered. Today was a day of final explorations, a chance to soak in a few more of Kyoto's unique offerings before heading back to Montreal. There's a bittersweet feeling as I pack my bags, knowing that while this chapter is ending, the memories and experiences will stay with me forever.
Our final day began with a delightful breakfast at Saishuan Shiraki. I must say, their traditional Japanese breakfast set the perfect tone for a day of reflection and exploration. The delicate flavors and artful presentation were a reminder of the care and attention to detail that permeates Japanese culture. I savored every bite, knowing it would be one of my last authentic Japanese meals on this trip.
With our stomachs full and spirits high, we headed to the Kyoto Railway Museum. As a restoration technician, I've always been fascinated by the mechanics and history of transportation. This museum was a dream come true! From the early steam locomotives to the sleek, modern bullet trains, the exhibits showcased the evolution of Japan's railway system. I was particularly impressed by the meticulous restoration work on display. It reminded me of my own work back in Montreal, preserving historical buildings. The dedication to preserving these machines, ensuring they tell their stories for generations to come, resonated deeply with me. I spent hours wandering through the halls, admiring the craftsmanship and engineering marvels. I even managed to bore my friends a little with my detailed explanations of certain restoration techniques!

The journey may end, but the memories and lessons learned will last a lifetime.
After the Railway Museum, we decided to visit the Shogunzuka Mound. This historical site offered not only a glimpse into Kyoto's past but also stunning panoramic views of the city. The mound itself is believed to be where Emperor Kanmu first surveyed the land before establishing Kyoto as the capital in 794. Standing there, overlooking the sprawling cityscape, I could almost imagine the emperor's vision as he planned the future of this magnificent city. The fresh air and the breathtaking scenery provided a sense of peace and tranquility, a perfect contrast to the bustling city below.

As the day wore on, we found ourselves at Arash's Kitchen for lunch. I was a bit hesitant at first, as I tend to prefer local cuisine when traveling, but my friends insisted that Arash's Kitchen served the best Persian food in Kyoto. I must admit, they were right! The fragrant spices and flavorful dishes were a welcome change of pace, and the warm hospitality of the staff made us feel right at home. It was a reminder that even in a city as steeped in tradition as Kyoto, there's always room for new influences and cultural exchange.

Our final dinner in Kyoto was at Teppanyaki Minami, a memorable experience. The chef's skillful performance, combined with the delicious food, made for a perfect send-off. I opted for the Kobe beef, which was cooked to perfection right before my eyes. Each bite was a burst of flavor, a testament to the quality of the ingredients and the chef's expertise. The lively atmosphere and the shared experience of watching the cooking process made it a fun and interactive meal, a great way to celebrate the end of our trip.

To cap off our adventure, we decided to visit The Roots of all evil bar. I'm not usually one for late-night bars, but my friends insisted it was a must-visit spot in Kyoto. The bar had a cozy, intimate atmosphere, with a wide selection of drinks and a friendly staff. We shared stories, laughed about our adventures, and raised a toast to the memories we had made. It was the perfect way to say goodbye to Kyoto, a final moment of camaraderie before heading back to our respective lives.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post from my hotel room, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Kyoto has exceeded all my expectations, offering a rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty. From the iconic temples and shrines to the bustling markets and serene gardens, every corner of this city has a story to tell. I've learned so much about Japanese history, art, and traditions, and I've gained a new appreciation for the importance of preserving our cultural heritage. I am looking forward to sharing all these experiences with Sophie and Mateo back in Montreal, perhaps even trying to recreate some of the delicious dishes I've tasted here.
This trip has also reminded me of the importance of traveling with friends. Sharing these experiences with my companions has made them even more meaningful. The laughter, the shared discoveries, and the support we've offered each other have created bonds that will last a lifetime. I'm grateful for their friendship and for the opportunity to explore this amazing city together.
While this is the end of our Kyoto adventure, it's not the end of my travels. I'm already thinking about my next destination, perhaps a return to Peru to reconnect with my roots and share my experiences with my son, Mateo. Until then, I'll cherish the memories of Kyoto and the lessons I've learned here. Thank you for joining me on this journey. I hope my blog posts have inspired you to explore the world and discover the beauty and wonder that awaits us all.
Tomorrow, we head to the airport to catch our flight back to Montreal. It's going to be a long journey, but I'm already looking forward to seeing my family and sharing my stories with them. I know that a part of me will always remain in Kyoto, a city that has captured my heart and soul.
