Uji: A Journey Through Time and Taste

Today, on the tenth day of our Kyoto adventure with friends, we ventured beyond the city limits to explore the enchanting town of Uji. Known for its historical sites and exquisite green tea, Uji promised a day of tranquility and cultural immersion, and it certainly delivered. I was particularly excited, as Uji is home to some of the oldest structures in Japan, a true treat for a restoration technician like myself.

Our day began, as many good days do, with a hearty breakfast. We decided to try Mezopotamia Kebab House for a change of pace. I must admit, I was a bit skeptical about having kebab in Japan, but the aroma wafting from the shop was too enticing to resist. The kebabs were fantastic. The meat was perfectly seasoned, and the bread was soft and fresh. It was a delightful fusion of Turkish flavors in the heart of Kyoto. A great start to the day!

Fueled and ready, we hopped on a train to Uji. The journey itself was a treat, with picturesque views of the Japanese countryside unfolding outside the window. As we arrived in Uji, the air felt different – calmer and fresher than Kyoto. The town had a serene atmosphere that immediately put us at ease.

Our first stop was Byodoin Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As a restoration technician, I was immediately drawn to the temple's stunning architecture. The Phoenix Hall, with its elegant winged design and vibrant red color, is a masterpiece of the Heian period. It felt surreal to stand before a structure that has stood for over a thousand years, surviving fires and wars. The intricate details of the woodwork and the serene reflection of the hall in the pond were simply breathtaking. It's truly a testament to the enduring beauty of Japanese craftsmanship. The Phoenix Hall is so iconic that it even graces the back of the Japanese ten-yen coin. I remember when Mateo, my son, first showed me that coin and asked about the building on it. Now, here I was, seeing it in person.

The Byodoin Temple stands as a testament to the enduring beauty of Japanese craftsmanship and the serene elegance of Pure Land Buddhist architecture.

We took a guided tour of the Phoenix Hall's interior, which houses a magnificent statue of Amida Buddha. Although the tour was in Japanese, our travel guidebook helped us understand the significance of the artwork and the history of the temple. I was particularly impressed by the underground treasure house, which displayed a collection of the temple's most valuable artifacts. It was fascinating to see these historical treasures up close and learn about their cultural importance.

After Byodoin, we strolled through the temple's Jodo-shiki garden, which represents the Pure Land Paradise. The garden was meticulously maintained, with carefully manicured trees, serene ponds, and vibrant flowers. It was the perfect place to reflect on the beauty and tranquility of the temple.

Next, we made our way to Uji Shrine, another UNESCO World Heritage site. This Shinto shrine, located adjacent to Ujigami Shrine, has a history spanning back to 313 AD. As we approached the shrine, we were greeted by a charming orange torii gate surrounded by lush trees. The main hall, constructed in the Sangensha Nagare-zukuri style, is considered an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It enshrines the spirit of Ujinowakiiratsukonomikoto, revered as the founder of culture and education. It's believed that the shrine bestows blessings for academic achievement, success in exams, and safe childbirth. I couldn't help but think of Mateo and how I wished I had visited this shrine before his exams!

One of the unique features of Uji Shrine is the presence of rabbit figurines throughout the grounds. These figurines are inspired by a story of Ujinowakiiratsukonomikoto being guided by a rabbit that frequently looked back to ensure he followed the right path. This rabbit, known as Mikaeri Usagi, is considered a divine messenger leading the way to the right path. Its charming design is featured on ema (votive plaques), omamori (amulets), and goshuincho (seal books) available at the shrine. Sophie would have loved these rabbit figurines; she has always had a soft spot for rabbits.

For lunch, we decided to try MUGHAL Indian Restaurant & Bar, another unexpected culinary find in Uji. The restaurant has been around for over three decades, established in 1987 by Kyoto native Yukihide Hirata. It's tucked away near the Kamo River, offering a pleasant ambiance. We started with prawn pakora, which were nicely cooked and not too heavy. For the main course, I had the chilli chicken, which had a good level of spice, and the meat was tender. The naan was a standout – light, fluffy, and piping hot. It was a satisfying meal that provided a nice change of pace from Japanese cuisine. I told my friends that I wanted something different from Kaiseki cooking, and this place was perfect.

After lunch, we indulged in some retail therapy at mina Kyoto. This shopping complex is home to a variety of stores, including UNIQLO, GU, and Loft. It's a great place to find stylish and functional items. I was on the lookout for some souvenirs for Sophie and Mateo, and I found a limited-edition UNIQLO T-shirt that I knew Mateo would love. Sophie would appreciate the MoMA Design Store, with its unique and artistic items. The store showcases a curated selection of contemporary clothing that reflects the essence of Japanese style. It is a perfect stop for tourists looking to enhance their wardrobe with unique pieces. The knowledgeable staff are ready to assist, offering personal styling advice and insights into the latest trends, which adds a personal touch to every visit. The store is conveniently open daily from 11 AM to 9 PM, making it accessible for those exploring the city.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to a nice dinner at Antonio, a Spanish restaurant in Kyoto. It was a delightful experience, with authentic Spanish cuisine and a cozy atmosphere. After spending several nights in Kyoto with a steady diet of Japanese cuisine, my family craved something different. The chef was Spanish, and that was a good sign. The paella was delicious, and the tapas were flavorful. It was a perfect way to end our day in Uji.

Reflecting on the day, Uji proved to be a hidden gem, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and culinary delights. From the serene beauty of Byodoin Temple and Uji Shrine to the unexpected flavors of Turkish and Indian cuisine, Uji provided a memorable experience that enriched our Kyoto adventure. As we headed back to our hotel, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this enchanting town with my friends.

Tomorrow, we will be visiting the Kyoto Railway Museum and Shogunzuka Mound. I am particularly excited about the railway museum, as I have always been fascinated by trains. And perhaps, we will find time for a nightcap at The Roots of all evil. bar.

As I prepare for our final day in Kyoto, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we have shared and the memories we have created. Kyoto has truly captured my heart, and I know that I will carry its beauty and serenity with me long after we have returned home.

I should remember to buy sunscreen and a travel adapter, as I forgot to bring them from Montreal.
