Kyoto's Contrasts: Serenity and Sound
Today was a day of contrasts, a deep dive into Kyoto's historical soul followed by a taste of its modern vibrancy. It's fascinating how this city manages to hold onto its ancient roots while still pulsing with contemporary energy. From the serene temples to the lively nightclubs, Kyoto offers a unique blend of experiences that I'm so grateful to be sharing with my friends.
Our day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Nakamura. I am always excited to try new places to eat, but I have to admit that I also enjoy going back to those that I already know are good. After a wonderful Japanese breakfast, we headed to Tōfuku-ji Temple. Tōfuku-ji is truly impressive, especially knowing its history. Founded in 1236, it’s one of Kyoto's Five Great Zen Temples. The sheer scale of the place is awe-inspiring, and you can't help but feel a sense of reverence as you walk through the grounds. I was particularly struck by the Sanmon Gate, which dates back to 1425. The fact that it’s the oldest Zen gate of its kind in Japan is incredible. The gardens were a highlight as well. The way they blend traditional design with modern art is fascinating, and I found myself completely lost in the tranquility of the space.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
Next on our itinerary was Sanjūsangendō Temple. I had read about the 1,001 statues of Kannon, but nothing prepared me for the actual sight. The temple hall itself is a marvel, the longest wooden structure in Japan. The name Sanjūsangendō comes from the 33 intervals between the building's support columns. As a restoration technician, I am always intrigued by construction details like this. But stepping inside and seeing those rows upon rows of golden Kannon statues...it's breathtaking. Each statue is slightly different, with unique expressions and details. It’s an overwhelming and deeply moving experience. I tried to imagine the skill and dedication that went into creating each one, and the sense of history was profound.

After soaking up the temple's atmosphere, we were ready for lunch. We stopped at Komefuku for a midday meal. Sophie would have loved this place. She always enjoyed a good tempura, and this restaurant definitely delivered. The tempura was light and crispy, and the seafood was incredibly fresh. I opted for the tempura and sushi lunch set, a perfect combination of flavors and textures. It was a satisfying and delicious meal that gave us the energy we needed for the rest of the day.

As the sun began to set, we freshened up at the hotel before heading out for dinner. Tonight's choice was French Dining Top of Kyoto, a revolving restaurant on the 14th floor of the Rihga Royal Hotel. The view was spectacular, offering a 360-degree panorama of the city. It was fun to try French food in Japan. The food was exquisite, each course beautifully presented and full of flavor. The combination of French techniques with Japanese ingredients created a unique and memorable dining experience. It was a wonderful way to celebrate our time in Kyoto and enjoy each other’s company.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we decided to experience Kyoto's nightlife. We headed to KITSUNE KYOTO, a nightclub in the Ponto Cho area. The club was lively and energetic, with a mix of locals and tourists. The music was a mix of genres, and the dance floor was packed. It was a fun and carefree way to end the day, letting loose and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere with my friends. I even met a few people from other countries who were also traveling in Japan, and we shared stories and travel tips.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning a trip to Byodoin Temple and Uji Shrine. Byodoin, with its iconic Phoenix Hall, is a place I have been looking forward to since planning this trip. And who knows, maybe we'll stumble upon another hidden gem or local favorite along the way. After that, we'll grab breakfast at Mezopotamia Kebab House. Indian food for lunch at MUGHAL Indian Restaurant & Bar. And finally dinner at Antonio.
Kyoto continues to surprise and delight me. It's a city where ancient traditions and modern life coexist in perfect harmony, offering a rich and diverse tapestry of experiences. I am so glad I get to experience this with my friends. As I reflect on today, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this amazing city and create memories that will last a lifetime. I am also excited to see what tomorrow brings. It's hard to believe that our trip is coming to an end soon, but I'm determined to make the most of every moment.
Until tomorrow,
Juan
