Journey to the Mythical Mount Olympus
Day 9: Enipeas Canyon Unveiled: A Day of Myth and Nature on Mount Olympus
Discover the enchanting trails of Býthos and the breathtaking Enipeas Canyon on Mount Olympus. A day of natural beauty and Greek mythology.
Whispers of the Gods in Enipeas Canyon
Today was nothing short of magical. Sophie and I ventured deeper into the realm of Mount Olympus, exploring landscapes that seemed to echo with the stories of ancient gods. It's humbling to walk where mythology intertwines with the natural world, a reminder of the powerful connection between humanity and the environment.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Nero Restaurant - Cavo Olympo. The restaurant's ambiance was amazing, and the food was delicious. It was the perfect way to fuel up before our explorations. After breakfast, we set off to explore Býthos, a place I had read about but was unprepared for its serene beauty.
Explore Býthos, a tranquil nature preserve near Litochoro, Greece, perfect for hiking, birdwatching, and reconnecting with nature.
The path to Býthos was an easy walk, and led us to what the locals call Zeus’s bathtub. It’s easy to see why the ancient Greeks chose Mount Olympus as a home for the Gods. The nature around the path is magnificent with greenery growing out of the bedrock, caves and stunning views back to the coast.
Next on our itinerary was the Enipeas Canyon. As a restoration technician, I'm used to working with stone and structures, but the scale of this canyon was simply awe-inspiring. The towering cliffs, the crystal-clear waters, and the sheer abundance of flora and fauna created a sensory experience that was both invigorating and calming.

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.
We spent hours traversing the scenic paths, each turn revealing a new vista more breathtaking than the last. The crisp mountain air and the sound of the Enipeas River flowing beside us were a constant reminder of nature's enduring power. I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence for this place, a sentiment I'm sure the ancient Greeks shared when they declared it the home of their gods.
For lunch, we stopped at Olympus Taverna, a cozy spot that offered a taste of authentic Greek cuisine. Sophie and I shared a traditional moussaka, savoring the rich flavors and reflecting on the morning's adventures. It was a simple meal, but the warmth of the taverna and the genuine hospitality of the staff made it a memorable experience.

In the late afternoon, we found ourselves at Akrotiri Beach Bar, a vibrant spot where the energy of the mountain met the tranquility of the sea. Sipping on a refreshing drink, we watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and purple. It was the perfect way to unwind and soak in the beauty of the moment.

As evening approached, we made our way to Prionia for dinner. The drive up the mountain was not for the faint of heart, but the views were breathtaking. Prionia is the highest point reachable by car on Mount Olympus, about 19 km from Litochoro. The restaurant itself was nestled amidst lush greenery, offering a panoramic view of the mountain's majestic grandeur.

The food at Prionia was hearty and satisfying, perfect after a day of hiking and exploration. We enjoyed a traditional Greek feast, complete with grilled meats, fresh salads, and local wine. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, filled with fellow travelers sharing stories of their own adventures on Mount Olympus.
Before heading back to our lodging for the night, Sophie and I took a moment to simply stand in the stillness of Prionia, gazing up at the stars that blanketed the night sky. It was a moment of profound peace, a reminder of the vastness of the universe and our place within it.
Tomorrow, we plan to ascend even higher, aiming to reach Mount Olympus 2917.727 m, and Pápá Ráchi, continuing our journey into the heart of Greek mythology. We'll start our day with breakfast at Flisvos FC, before continuing our exploration. For lunch, we are planning to visit Taverna Olympos and for dinner Stavros Refuge - Shelter D. I am also planning to visit the 55κορυφές shop. I'm hoping the weather will be in our favor, and that we will be able to make it all the way to the top!
As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible corner of the world. Mount Olympus is more than just a mountain; it's a living testament to the power of nature, the richness of human history, and the enduring allure of mythology. It’s a place that invites you to connect with something larger than yourself, to find inspiration in the beauty that surrounds you, and to discover the whispers of the gods in the wind.
I feel so lucky to be sharing this experience with Sophie. Her enthusiasm and curiosity make every moment even more special. As we continue our journey, I know that the memories we create together will be treasured for a lifetime. I'm also grateful for the reminder to carry a portable charger next time. It would have been nice to have had more battery life for the pictures!
I am also reminded of my work back in Montreal. I am eager to get back to preserving the city's architectural heritage. I find myself inspired by the blend of ancient history and natural beauty I’ve witnessed here. It reinforces my commitment to preserving the stories and structures of the past for future generations. Perhaps I will incorporate some Andean influences into my work when I return, as a way of blending my heritage with my present.
In the meantime, I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings. Mount Olympus, here we come!
