Day 8: Chasing Reflections: Pangong's Icy Beauty and Leh's Cultural Heart
Discover the serene beauty of Pangong Lake and the cultural treasures of Leh in a single day of exploration and reflection.
A Day of Contrasts and Reflections
Today was a day of stark contrasts, a journey from the breathtaking, icy expanse of Pangong Lake to the historical depths of Leh's Central Asian Museum. It was a day that challenged the senses and stirred the soul, reminding me once again why I embarked on this solo adventure to Leh.
Experience the breathtaking beauty of Panggong Lake in Ladakh, a stunning high-altitude lake that captivates with its vibrant colors and serene landscapes.
The day began early, with a hearty breakfast at Amigo Korean Restaurant. I must admit, Korean cuisine in the Himalayas was not something I had anticipated, but the warm, flavorful dishes were a welcome start to a day that promised to be both physically and mentally demanding. It reminded me of the fusion cuisine Sophie and I enjoy back in Montreal, a blend of cultures that somehow feels perfectly at home.

The drive to Pangong Lake was nothing short of spectacular. Even in late November, the landscape retained a rugged beauty, the mountains dusted with snow under a clear, crisp sky. The air was thin and biting, a stark reminder of the altitude, but the views more than compensated for any discomfort. As I approached Pangong Tso, the sight that unfolded before me was simply mesmerizing. The lake, partially frozen, reflected the surrounding peaks in a surreal, icy mirror. The blues were unlike anything I had ever seen, shifting in hue with the changing light.
I spent a good couple of hours simply wandering along the shore, capturing photos and absorbing the sheer magnificence of the landscape. The wind whipped around me, but I barely noticed, lost in the moment. There were few other tourists around, which added to the sense of solitude and serenity. It was a far cry from the bustling streets of Montreal, a world away from my work restoring old buildings. Here, in the heart of the Himalayas, I felt a sense of peace I rarely experience amidst the demands of daily life.
The beauty of Pangong Lake is not just in its visual splendor, but in the profound sense of tranquility it instills.
Leaving Pangong was difficult, but I knew I had another destination to explore: the Central Asian Museum in Leh. After a quick lunch at The Urban Garden Restaurant, where I enjoyed a surprisingly delicious meal amidst a cozy atmosphere, I made my way to the museum. The transition from the vast, open landscape of Pangong to the enclosed, historical space of the museum was jarring, yet fascinating.

The Central Asian Museum is a treasure trove of artifacts and stories, a testament to Leh's historical significance as a trade hub along the Silk Road. I was particularly drawn to the exhibits showcasing ancient coins, textiles, and tools used by traders who traversed these mountains centuries ago. It was incredible to imagine the journeys they undertook, the risks they faced, and the cultural exchanges that took place in this remote corner of the world. The museum also houses Islamic relics and texts, offering insight into the spiritual exchanges that occurred as Muslim traders passed through the region.
As I wandered through the museum, I couldn't help but draw parallels between my own journey and those of the traders of old. While I may not be bartering goods, I am certainly engaged in a form of cultural exchange, learning about the history and traditions of this region and sharing my experiences with others through this blog. It’s a humbling thought, connecting my present to a rich and storied past.
The architecture of the museum itself is noteworthy, blending traditional Ladakhi and Central Asian design elements. The intricate wooden carvings and the serene courtyard create a space that is both informative and contemplative. I spent hours poring over the exhibits, reading the descriptions, and imagining the lives of those who came before me. I found myself particularly drawn to the ancient maps and travel documents, detailing the perilous journeys traders undertook, navigating treacherous mountain passes like Khardung La and Chang La, braving freezing conditions and unpredictable weather.
Before heading to dinner, I decided to check out SHOBLA BAR AND RESTURANT. It was a welcome respite after a day of intense sightseeing. The ambiance was relaxed, and I enjoyed a local beer while chatting with some fellow travelers. It was interesting to hear their stories and perspectives on Leh, each one unique and shaped by their own experiences.

For dinner, I chose Bodhi Terrace, a vegan restaurant known for its stunning views of the Himalayan mountaintops. The food was delicious and healthy, a perfect end to a day of exploration. As I sat on the terrace, watching the sunset over the mountains, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. The kindness of the owner and staff made me feel safe and well-cared for.

The clear, cold air, the majestic peaks, the vibrant culture – it all combined to create an experience that I will cherish for a lifetime. It reminded me of the stories my grandfather used to tell me about the Andes, about the resilience and beauty of the people and the land. It's a connection to my roots, a reminder of where I come from, even as I explore new horizons.
As I prepare for my final day in Leh, I find myself reflecting on all that I have seen and learned. This solo journey has been more than just a vacation; it has been a pilgrimage of sorts, a quest for understanding and connection. And while I may be eager to return home to Sophie and Mateo, I know that a part of me will always remain here, in the heart of the Himalayas. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Zorawar Fort and the War Memorial Statue, two more landmarks that promise to offer further insights into the history and culture of this remarkable region. I also plan to do some last-minute souvenir shopping at Unique Ladakh. It's hard to believe that this adventure is coming to an end, but I am determined to make the most of every remaining moment.
Perhaps I'll find a small quena, like the one I play for Mateo back home, to remind me of these mountain melodies. Or maybe a piece of Ladakhi textile, a vibrant echo of the colors that have painted my days here. Whatever I choose, it will be a tangible link to this land, a story I can share with my family, a memory etched in my heart forever.
The Leh-Srinagar Highway remains open, but the Leh-Manali Highway is closed due to snow. November marks the beginning of lean tourist season in Ladakh, ideal for travelers looking for peace, snow, and solitude. While nights are freezing, daytime temperatures are bearable with proper clothing. November is milder compared to peak winter (December-February), making it ideal for those who want a winter experience without extreme conditions. Days in Leh in November usually range between 5°C to 10°C, making it fairly manageable if you're layered up. Nights can get quite chilly, often dropping to -5°C or even lower, especially in high-altitude areas like Pangong or Tso Moriri.
This trip has been a reminder that sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones we take alone, the journeys that lead us not just to new places, but to new understandings of ourselves. And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I am filled with a sense of anticipation for whatever tomorrow may bring, knowing that even in the quiet solitude of the Himalayas, there is always something new to discover.
