Join Juan's thrilling journey to Khardung La, the world's highest motorable pass, and immerse in Leh's local flavors and traditions.
Reaching the Roof of the World
Today was a day of incredible heights, both literally and figuratively. I set out to conquer Khardung, the world's highest motorable pass, and immerse myself even further in the unique culture of Leh. It was a day filled with stunning landscapes, delicious food, and the warmth of Ladakhi hospitality.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Gupp Shupp @ Chai Shai. I had read so much about their masala chai and vegetarian options that I couldn't resist. The reviews were spot on; the chai was indeed special, a perfect blend of spices that warmed me from the inside out. I opted for a traditional aloo paratha, which provided the perfect fuel for the day’s adventure. The staff was incredibly friendly, making me feel right at home. I even had a brief chat with one of them about the local monasteries, gaining some valuable insights for future visits. I made a mental note to bring Sophie and Mateo here someday; they would absolutely love the cozy atmosphere and the authentic Indian flavors. After breakfast, I ensured I was layered up; November in Leh demands serious warm clothing.
With the sun shining brightly, I started my journey towards Khardung La. The road itself was an adventure, winding through the rugged Himalayan terrain. The landscape transformed with every turn, from barren mountains to snow-dusted peaks. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale of nature's beauty. The air was crisp and clean, and the views were simply breathtaking. As I ascended, I noticed the prayer flags fluttering in the wind, adding a touch of spirituality to the already majestic scenery. I made sure to take it slow, remembering the importance of acclimatizing to the high altitude.
Sometimes, the greatest journeys are not about reaching a destination, but about the experiences and self-discovery along the way.
Reaching Khardung La was an exhilarating experience. The pass was covered in snow, creating a surreal winter wonderland. I took the obligatory photos with the signboard, feeling a sense of accomplishment. The biting wind reminded me of Montreal winters, but the panoramic views of the Karakoram range were worth braving the cold. I spent some time soaking in the atmosphere, reflecting on my solo journey and the incredible experiences I've had so far. I could almost hear Mateo's excited voice asking a million questions about the snow and the mountains. I made a promise to myself to bring him here one day, to share this incredible view with my son.
After descending from Khardung La, I decided to indulge in another Ladakhi experience: trekking in Ladakh. While a full-fledged trek wasn't feasible given the limited daylight and the cold, I opted for a shorter hike in the outskirts of Leh. I chose a trail that offered stunning views of the Shanti Stupa and the Leh Palace. The hike was a welcome change of pace after the drive, allowing me to stretch my legs and connect with nature. I even spotted a few local birds, their vibrant colors contrasting against the stark landscape.

By lunchtime, I was famished. I headed to Salt and Pepper Family Restaurant, drawn in by its promise of Indo-European cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively atmosphere. I ordered their highly recommended chicken biryani, and it did not disappoint. The biryani was flavorful and aromatic, a perfect blend of spices and tender chicken. The service was prompt and courteous, and the prices were reasonable. It was a great place to recharge and observe the local culture. I overheard snippets of conversations in Ladakhi and Hindi, feeling a sense of connection to this vibrant community.

In the afternoon, I decided to explore the local markets, seeking out Nomadic Pashmina. I wanted to find a special gift for Sophie, something that would remind her of my journey. The shop was a treasure trove of exquisite shawls, scarves, and other woolen products. The owner, Mr. Phuntsog, was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, explaining the intricate process of making Pashmina wool. I learned about the Changthangi goats and the traditional methods used to create these luxurious textiles. I finally settled on a beautiful hand-woven shawl in a subtle shade of blue, knowing that Sophie would adore it. I also picked up a warm beanie for Mateo, imagining him wearing it on our winter walks in Montreal.

As evening approached, I sought out Chimath Tibetan Kitchen for dinner, eager to try authentic Tibetan cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with traditional Tibetan décor. The aroma of spices filled the air, creating a warm and comforting ambiance. I ordered Thukpa, a traditional Tibetan noodle soup, and momos, the famous Tibetan dumplings. The Thukpa was hearty and flavorful, perfect for the cold weather. The momos were delicious, filled with vegetables and served with a spicy dipping sauce. The staff was incredibly welcoming, making me feel like a guest in their home. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such authentic flavors.

I also learned that Chemdey Wangchok Festival is being celebrated around this time.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Pangong Lake and the Central Asian Museum. I've heard so much about the lake's stunning colors and the museum's rich collection of artifacts, and I am looking forward to experiencing them firsthand. I'm also planning to try Amigo Korean Restaurant for breakfast, The Urban Garden Restaurant Leh for lunch, and Bodhi Terrace for dinner. And perhaps, I'll end the day at SHOBLA BAR AND RESTURANT, if I am not too tired from the day's adventures.
As I reflect on today, I realize that this solo journey is not just about seeing new places, but also about discovering new aspects of myself. It's about pushing my boundaries, embracing the unknown, and connecting with different cultures. It's about appreciating the simple things in life, like a warm cup of chai, a stunning mountain view, and the kindness of strangers. These are the experiences that will stay with me long after I return to Montreal.
And as I prepare for another day of exploration, I am filled with a sense of excitement and gratitude. Leh has truly captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
