A Day of Illusions and Remembrance

Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of mystifying phenomena and solemn reflection. Leh continues to surprise me with its unique offerings, and I'm eager to share the experiences that filled my day.

I started my day with a hearty breakfast at KANG-LA-CHEN. The hotel was conveniently located at the beginning of Changspa, which was a delight to stay in. The staff was efficient and helpful. The rooms and sheets were spotless and the electric blankets kept me comfortably warm through the cold night. After breakfast, I set out to explore what Leh had in store for me.

My first stop was the famed Magnetic Hill. I had heard so much about this place, where gravity seems to take a break, and I was eager to experience it myself. Located about 25 kilometers from Leh, the drive itself was stunning, with the stark landscape of the Himalayas providing a dramatic backdrop. As I approached the designated spot, I could see other vehicles lined up, ready to test the hill's magnetic prowess. I parked my taxi in the marked yellow box, put it in neutral, and watched in amazement as it appeared to roll uphill. It was an optical illusion, of course, caused by the surrounding landscape, but it was still a fun and surreal experience. The villagers have a myth about this place. They think there was a time when a road at Magnetic Hill existed. This road took people to heaven. Those who deserved heaven were pulled up while walking on this path, whereas those who didn't deserve the place didn't feel anything. I took some photos, enjoyed the view, and pondered the mysteries of perception.

Next on my itinerary was the Hall of Fame, a museum constructed by the Indian Army in memory of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the Indo-Pak wars. As the son of a veteran, I felt a deep connection to this place. The museum is about 4 km from the city of Leh and is easily accessible. The Hall of Fame had fantastic visuals, great sound and commentary that just really immerses you in India's military past and all the sacrifices those heroic soldiers made in Ladakh. The exhibits were well-maintained and informative, showcasing weapons, uniforms, and documents from various battles. There were also poignant letters written by soldiers to their families, which brought a tear to my eye. It was a moving tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of the Indian armed forces. The museum also provided insights into the culture and history of Ladakh, which gave me a deeper appreciation for the region and its people.

For lunch, I decided to try NAMZA DINING, a restaurant known for its authentic Ladakhi cuisine. Hidden behind a sign that says “Namza Couture” (yes, a little sneaky), it felt less like a restaurant and more like a secret getaway. I ordered the mutton momos and the Gyurma sausage starter, both of which were delicious. The service was exceptional, and the ambiance was cozy and inviting. The owner is extremely warm and hospitable and totally hands on which translates into a wonderful dining experience with some great local food.

In the evening, I found myself at The Grand Wazwan Restaurant for dinner, eager to sample some authentic Kashmiri cuisine. The restaurant was near the Leh Market. I ordered the Rogan Josh and Keema Naan, both of which were flavorful and satisfying. The portions were generous, and the service was fast and friendly. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and reflection.

To cap off the night, I ventured to Downtown Cafe & Bar for a drink. The cafe had an amazing evening and nighttime vibe. The music, decor, and overall energy create a really fun and engaging space. I enjoyed a local beer and chatted with some fellow travelers, sharing stories and experiences. It was a relaxing and enjoyable way to unwind after a long day.

As I reflect on the day, I am struck by the contrasts of Leh. The illusion of Magnetic Hill, the solemnity of the Hall of Fame, the flavors of Ladakhi and Kashmiri cuisine, and the camaraderie of the Downtown Cafe & Bar. It's a place that challenges your perceptions, honors its heroes, and offers a warm welcome to all who visit.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Likir Gompa and Phyang Monastery, continuing my exploration of Ladakh's rich cultural heritage. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at Zanskar Arts, picking up some souvenirs for Sophie, Mateo and myself. It will also be nice to explore the monasteries. I am also mindful that Chemday Wangchok Festival will be celebrated on the 18th and 19th of the month at Chemrey Monastery, so I will make sure to not clash with those celebrations. Perhaps I'll even try to learn a few more phrases in Ladakhi. Jullay!

Before I turn in for the night, I must remember to buy sunscreen and an extra charger tomorrow. I knew I forgot something!
