Farewell, Ghana!

As my adventure in Ghana draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. This solo trip has been a profound experience, offering moments of serene reflection amidst the vibrant tapestry of Ghanaian culture and nature. Today, my final day, was dedicated to exploring Kakum National Park and savoring the local cuisine of Cape Coast. It’s a bittersweet feeling, knowing that tomorrow I’ll be heading back to London, back to my familiar life at the British Library, but I carry with me a wealth of memories and a deeper understanding of this beautiful country.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at WALJI RESTAURANT. I opted for a traditional Ghanaian dish of yam and eggs, fueling up for the day’s adventures. It was a simple meal, but the flavors were rich and satisfying, a perfect start to a day of exploration. I always appreciate these moments of culinary immersion, trying new things and experiencing the local culture through its food.

After breakfast, I made my way to Kakum National Park. The park is a jewel of Ghana, a lush rainforest teeming with life. The main attraction, of course, is the canopy walkway, a series of suspension bridges stretching high above the forest floor. As I walked across these swaying bridges, I was treated to a breathtaking view of the rainforest canopy. The air was thick with humidity, and the sounds of the forest—the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves—were all around me.

To walk through Kakum is to walk through time, to hear the whispers of the forest and the echoes of history.

It was an awe-inspiring experience, one that reminded me of the incredible biodiversity of our planet. I tried to spot some of the park's elusive wildlife, but the animals remained hidden in the dense foliage. Still, just being there, surrounded by the beauty of nature, was enough. I thought of Aisha and the children, imagining their excitement at seeing such a place. Perhaps one day, I can bring them here to experience it firsthand.

After my walk through the canopy, I took some time to explore the forest floor. The trails were well-maintained, and I enjoyed learning about the different species of trees and plants that call Kakum home. The park is not only a place of natural beauty but also an important center for conservation and research. It's heartening to see the efforts being made to protect this precious ecosystem. It reminded me of Tanzania and the need to protect our natural heritage.

For lunch, I decided to try In-n-out chillies, a local restaurant in Cape Coast. I had heard good things about their jollof rice, and I was not disappointed. The rice was perfectly cooked, with a delicious blend of spices and vegetables. It was a flavorful and satisfying meal, a true taste of Ghana. As I ate, I reflected on the incredible variety of food I had enjoyed during my trip, from the spicy stews of Wli to the fresh seafood of Cape Coast.

In the late afternoon, I visited Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a poignant reminder of the transatlantic slave trade. The castle served as a holding site for enslaved Africans before they were shipped across the Atlantic, and its dark history is palpable. As I walked through the dungeons and holding cells, I was overwhelmed by a sense of sorrow and outrage. It was a deeply moving experience, one that forced me to confront the horrors of the past. Being an archivist specializing in African history, I felt a profound connection to this place, a sense of responsibility to remember and to share its stories. I thought about Imani and Farah, about the importance of understanding our history, both the good and the bad. It is a history that must never be forgotten.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to dinner at Castle Beach Resturant. The restaurant is located right on the beach, offering stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. I ordered a grilled fish, savoring the fresh, briny flavors as I watched the sunset. It was a peaceful and reflective moment, a chance to process the day’s experiences and to appreciate the beauty of Ghana.

After dinner, I decided to check out The Views Pub. I enjoyed a local beer while listening to some Ghanaian music. The pub was lively and welcoming, a great place to unwind after a long day. I met some interesting people, both locals and tourists, and we shared stories and laughter. It was a fitting end to my final day in Ghana.

Tomorrow, I will begin my journey back to London. I will leave Ghana with a heavy heart, but also with a deep sense of gratitude. This trip has been an incredible experience, one that has enriched my understanding of the world and of myself. I have seen breathtaking landscapes, tasted delicious food, and met wonderful people. I have also confronted difficult truths about the past, truths that must never be forgotten. I came here seeking adventure and reflection, and I found both in abundance.

As I prepare to return to my life in London, I know that the memories of this trip will stay with me forever. I will carry with me the warmth of the Ghanaian people, the beauty of the Ghanaian landscape, and the lessons I have learned about history and culture. I am grateful for the opportunity to have experienced this amazing country, and I hope to return someday soon, perhaps with Aisha and the children in tow. Until then, I will continue to share my stories and insights with the world, hoping to inspire others to embark on their own journeys of discovery.

Goodbye, Ghana. You have captured my heart.
