A Kaleidoscope of Colors

Today was a day of vibrant hues and rich experiences, a true feast for the senses. From the breathtaking Rainbow Mountain to the cozy restaurants of Cusco, every moment was filled with awe and delight. It’s amazing how quickly you can fall in love with a place, especially when you’re surrounded by good friends and stunning scenery.

The day began early, as most adventures in the Andes do. After a hearty breakfast at Qamaq Restaurante, we piled into our transport, excitement buzzing in the air. The drive to the Rainbow Mountain Cusipata Trail Parking took us through winding roads, each turn revealing more of the stunning Andean landscape. The crisp morning air nipped at our cheeks, a refreshing contrast to the warmth of the anticipation building within us. I made sure to double-check my bag, feeling a pang of regret for forgetting my portable phone charger; relying on my camera to capture the day’s memories would have to suffice. Greta would definitely have reminded me!

Arriving at the trailhead, the sight that greeted us was nothing short of spectacular. The Rainbow Mountain, or Vinicunca as it’s known locally, stood in all its glory, a masterpiece painted by nature itself. The vibrant stripes of red, yellow, green, and blue seemed almost unreal, a testament to the mineral-rich soil and the forces of time. The altitude, however, was a stark reminder of the challenge ahead. At over 5,000 meters (approx. 16,404 feet), even a short walk can feel like a marathon.

We started our ascent, taking it slow and steady, mindful of the altitude. The trail was bustling with fellow trekkers, all equally mesmerized by the surreal landscape. Along the way, we passed local vendors offering coca tea, a traditional remedy for altitude sickness. I remembered Leila’s initial reaction to the coca tea in Berlin – a funny face and a firm “No, thank you!” – and chuckled to myself. She definitely prefers Greta's Apfelstrudel. It's moments like these that make traveling with friends so special; sharing new experiences and creating lasting memories.

As we climbed higher, the views became even more breathtaking. The snow-capped peaks of the Área de Conservación Regional Ausangate loomed in the distance, their majestic presence adding to the grandeur of the scene. The Ausangate region, established as a conservation area in December 2019, protects glaciers, lagoons, and high-altitude ecosystems. Knowing that our trek was contributing to the local economy and supporting the conservation of this precious environment made the experience even more meaningful.

Reaching the summit was an exhilarating moment. The panoramic views were simply stunning, a reward well worth the effort. We spent some time soaking it all in, taking photos, and simply marveling at the beauty of the Andes. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the power and majesty of nature. I snapped countless photos, trying to capture the essence of the landscape, knowing full well that no image could truly do it justice.

It’s not about the destination, but the journey and the people you share it with.

After descending from Rainbow Mountain, we made our way back towards Cusco, our stomachs rumbling with anticipation. Lunch at Restaurante Tupana Wasi was a welcome treat. The cozy atmosphere and delicious Peruvian cuisine were the perfect way to refuel after our trek. I opted for the alpaca steak, a local delicacy, while others in our group tried the cuy (guinea pig), a traditional Andean dish. It’s always interesting to see what culinary adventures my friends are willing to embark on!

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to explore the artisan scene in Cusco. A visit to TEXTILES POMATAYLLA was a must. This shop is known for bringing the best of Ayacucho's handicrafts to Cusco, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region. Diana Pomataylla, the owner, was inspired to open her store to share the crafts from Ayacucho with travelers from all over the world. I was immediately drawn to the colorful textiles, each piece telling a story of tradition and artistry. The intricate designs and vibrant colors were a testament to the skill and dedication of the local artisans.

I found myself particularly fascinated by the retablos, colorful wooden carved altarpieces representing typical elements of Peruvian culture. These unique pieces of art are a tradition from the Ayacucho region, and TEXTILES POMATAYLLA also offers a lovely range of baby alpaca shawls and scarves and a range of leather handbags with an alpaca fur trim. Learning about the history and significance of these crafts added a deeper layer of appreciation to the experience. I even picked up a small, hand-woven tapestry as a souvenir for Greta, knowing she would appreciate the intricate detail and cultural significance.

As the day drew to a close, we treated ourselves to a memorable dinner at Senzo, a high-end restaurant located in the Palacio Nazarenas luxury hotel. Senzo strives to showcase local Andean products on their menu. The restaurant is helmed by Virgilio Martinez, whose Central in Lima is arguably one of the top restaurants in the country. The ambiance was elegant and refined, the perfect setting for a special evening. The menu featured a modern take on traditional Peruvian dishes, using locally sourced ingredients and innovative culinary techniques. The building and gardens are a beautiful mix of exquisitely restored Incan walls and colonial features.

I opted for the tasting menu, a culinary journey through the flavors of the Andes. Each course was a work of art, a symphony of textures and tastes that delighted the senses. From the vibrant salads to the succulent meats, every dish was a celebration of Peruvian gastronomy. The service was impeccable, the staff attentive and knowledgeable, guiding us through the menu with passion and expertise. It was a truly unforgettable dining experience, a fitting end to a day filled with adventure and discovery.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had experienced in such a short time. From the awe-inspiring beauty of Rainbow Mountain to the vibrant culture of Cusco, every moment had been a gift. I’m grateful for the opportunity to explore this incredible country with my friends, sharing laughter, stories, and unforgettable experiences. And as I drift off to sleep, I can’t help but feel excited about what tomorrow will bring. We're planning to visit Mano de Ausanagate and Cordillera del Arcoiris Palccoyo, and perhaps wind down with a drink at Rock House Cafe. Until then, goodnight from Cusco!

I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventure, which includes a visit to Mano de Ausanagate and Cordillera del Arcoiris Palccoyo. Who knows what wonders await us?

And hey, maybe I'll even remember to pack that portable charger this time!
