Seven Lagunas, Infinite Views

Today was nothing short of magical. As a freelance marketing consultant based in Berlin, I often find myself trading the vibrant cityscapes for the tranquility of nature. This trip to Peru with my friends is exactly what I needed – a chance to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the earth. And today, the earth truly delivered.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Inkaterra in Cusco. Fuelled up, we set off early, the crisp mountain air nipping at our faces as we drove towards the trailhead. The anticipation was palpable; we'd heard whispers of the legendary '7 Lagunas' of Ausangate, and I was eager to capture their beauty through my lens. I made sure I had my camera ready, still kicking myself for forgetting that extra memory card – rookie mistake! I even considered a quick stop at Munaycha Outdoor to grab one, but the excitement of the trek was too strong to resist.

The drive itself was an adventure, winding through valleys dotted with small villages and herds of llamas. It reminded me of the scenic drives back in Hilo, Hawaii, though trading the ocean views for towering Andean peaks. Finally, we arrived at the starting point of the trail, the imposing Nevado Ausangate looming large in the distance.

The trek started gently enough, a gradual ascent into the mountains. The air was thin, a stark contrast to Berlin's smog, but the views were instantly rewarding. Rolling hills gave way to rocky paths, and soon, the first lagoon shimmered into view – a breathtaking expanse of turquoise reflecting the sky above. Each lagoon we encountered was unique, boasting its own distinct hue, from deep blues to emerald greens. The landscape was surreal, like stepping into a painting.

The mountains whisper, and the lagoons sing – a symphony of nature that resonates deep within the soul.

As we climbed higher, the altitude began to take its toll. Even with a few days of acclimatization in Cusco, each step required conscious effort. But the sheer beauty surrounding us spurred us onward. We paused frequently, not just to catch our breath, but to soak in the panoramic vistas. The stark contrast of the snow-capped peaks against the vibrant blue of the lagoons was mesmerizing.

I thought about Greta and Leila back in Berlin. Leila would have loved splashing in these lagoons, and Greta, with her curator's eye, would have appreciated the geological tapestry of the landscape. I made a mental note to find a piece of Peruvian art for her collection when we return.

Lunch at Apu Ausangate Restaurant was a welcome respite. We devoured traditional Peruvian fare, quinoa soup served in a ceramic hat, which was both delicious and delightfully quirky. It was the perfect fuel for the second half of our trek. Chatting with my friends, I realized how much I cherish these moments – sharing experiences, forging memories, and simply being present in nature's embrace.

After lunch, we continued our ascent, the trail becoming steeper and more challenging. But with each step, the views grew even more spectacular. We passed cascading waterfalls, grazing alpacas, and weathered stone structures that hinted at the region's rich history. The spirit of the Andes was palpable, a sense of ancient wisdom and raw power that resonated deep within my soul.

Reaching the final lagoon was a triumph. Exhausted but exhilarated, we stood in awe, gazing upon the entire chain of lagoons spread out before us like a string of precious jewels. The sun began its descent, casting a golden glow upon the landscape, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple. It was a moment of pure magic, a memory I will forever cherish.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back down the mountain, our hearts full of gratitude for the beauty we had witnessed. Dinner at Morena Peruvian Kitchen in Cusco was the perfect ending to a perfect day. We savored the flavors of Peru, reminiscing about our adventure and already planning our next excursion.

Tomorrow, we're revisiting the Ausangate region, specifically the Ausangate 7 Lagunas, for another perspective, followed by a relaxing soak in the Aguas Termales Pacchanta. I'm also hoping to check out The Space Club Cusco in the evening for a bit of nightlife, but after today's trek, I might just be content with a good night's sleep! It's moments like these that make me appreciate the freedom of freelance life, allowing me to explore the world and share my experiences with all of you. Mahalo, Peru, for another unforgettable day.
