Exploring the Ausangate Trek: A Journey through Peru's Andean Wonders
Day 2: Chasing Rainbows and Azure Dreams: A Day of Wonders in the Peruvian Highlands
Embark on an unforgettable journey to Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain and Laguna Azulcocha, experiencing Peru's stunning beauty and vibrant culture.
A Symphony of Colors and Heights
Today was nothing short of spectacular, a day where the vibrant hues of Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain met the serene blues of Laguna Azulcocha. It's days like these that remind me why I traded my Berlin office for the open road, seeking out experiences that paint the soul in new and exciting colors. The altitude definitely added a layer of challenge, but the sheer beauty of Peru's landscapes made every step worthwhile.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Jack's Café in Cusco. I opted for the vegan breakfast, a delightful spread that fueled me up for the adventures ahead. It's amazing how a good meal can set the tone for the entire day. As someone who appreciates a good coffee, I was not disappointed, this place is definitely the spot for people who love a great coffee.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off for Vinicunca, the famed Rainbow Mountain. The drive itself was an experience, winding through valleys and past small villages that seemed untouched by time. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe as we approached the mountain, its colorful stripes becoming more and more vivid with each passing mile. It's December, which meant the start of the rainy season, but we were fortunate to have a clear morning.

The hike up Rainbow Mountain was challenging, to say the least. At an altitude of 5,200 meters (17,060 feet), the air was thin, and every step required a conscious effort. I found myself pausing frequently, not just to catch my breath, but also to soak in the incredible views. The landscape was a tapestry of greens and browns, dotted with grazing alpacas and the occasional hardy traveler.
I remembered reading about altitude sickness and the importance of acclimatization. Luckily, spending the previous day in Cusco helped, but I still felt the effects of the altitude. Staying hydrated was key, and I made sure to sip water consistently throughout the hike. Greta kept reminding me to slow down and pace myself, her museum curator's patience proving invaluable. I even chewed on some coca leaves, a local remedy for altitude sickness, which seemed to help.
As we ascended, the weather began to change, and the clear skies gave way to clouds. It was a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of mountain weather. Layered clothing was essential, and I was grateful for my warm jacket and gloves.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, we reached the summit. And what a sight it was! Rainbow Mountain lived up to its name, with vibrant stripes of red, yellow, green, and blue stretching across its slopes. The colors were the result of different mineral deposits, exposed over centuries of erosion. It was a geological masterpiece, a testament to the power and beauty of nature.
The earth has music for those who listen.
I spent a good hour at the top, simply taking in the view and snapping photos. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reward for all the effort it took to get there. I shared the experience with my friends, laughing and joking as we marveled at the landscape. It's moments like these that make traveling with friends so special.
After descending from Rainbow Mountain, we drove to Laguna Azulcocha, another gem hidden in the Peruvian highlands. The landscape shifted from colorful mountains to rolling hills and serene waters. Laguna Azulcocha, nestled at the foot of the Humashraju peak in the Cordillera Blanca, was a sight to behold. The clear turquoise waters reflected the surrounding mountains, creating a mirror-like effect that was simply mesmerizing.

The hike to the lagoon was much easier than the one to Rainbow Mountain, and I found myself enjoying the leisurely pace. The air was crisp and clean, and the only sounds were the gentle lapping of water and the occasional bird call. I took the opportunity to reflect on the day's experiences, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such incredible beauty.
At Laguna Azulcocha, we took some time to simply relax and soak in the atmosphere. I sat by the shore, watching the clouds drift across the sky and listening to the wind whisper through the reeds. It was a moment of perfect tranquility, a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and connect with nature.
For lunch, we stopped at Organika Restaurant in Cusco. The restaurant prides itself on using fresh, local ingredients from their own farm in the Sacred Valley, and the food was simply divine. I opted for the quinoa risotto, a flavorful and satisfying dish that was the perfect fuel for the rest of our day. The service was great and the staff were friendly.

As evening approached, we headed back to Cusco, but not before making a pit stop at Mama Africa, a lively bar known for its vibrant nightlife. Though I'm not much of a dancer, I enjoyed the energetic atmosphere and the opportunity to mingle with locals and fellow travelers. The rooftop views of the plaza were fantastic, and I snapped a few photos to capture the moment.

For our final meal of the day, we dined at Inka Grill, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Peruvian cuisine. I tried the alpaca brochettes, which were tender and flavorful, a delightful end to a day filled with culinary adventures.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore the 7 Lagunas of Ausangate and Nevado Ausangate. I'm excited to see what other wonders this region has in store for us. But for now, I'm content to reflect on the incredible experiences of today, grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful country with my friends.
Back at the Novotel Cusco, I took some time to reflect on the day. It struck me how different this was from my usual life in Berlin. Trading emails and meetings for mountain trails and turquoise lagoons was a decision I'll never regret. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow would bring new adventures and new memories to cherish.

Before falling asleep I checked our itinerary for tomorrow, which includes breakfast at Café Inkaterra, lunch at Apu Ausangate Restaurant, and dinner at Morena Peruvian Kitchen. Also on the agenda is a visit to Munaycha Outdoor, a shop I'm hoping will have that portable phone charger I forgot to pack. It's the little things, you know?
Until tomorrow,
Kai
