Finding Paradise in Phong Nha's Embrace
Today was a day of pure adventure and serenity, a perfect blend that reminded me why we embarked on this journey to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. It's incredible how a single day can encompass both tranquil relaxation and exhilarating exploration, creating memories that will last a lifetime. From the refreshing waters of HaVa Valley - Thung Lũng Ngọc Bích, every moment was a testament to the natural beauty and wonder of this region.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at The Villas Restaurant. I enjoyed a Bún chả dish, while Greta opted for the Pho. Leila, of course, wanted pancakes. After breakfast, we were ready to explore HaVa Valley - Thung Lũng Ngọc Bích. This place is truly a hidden gem. As we drove closer, the landscape transformed into a stunning panorama of emerald-green waters and towering cliffs. It felt like stepping into a different world, a sanctuary of peace far removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The valley is located about 75 kilometers from Phong Nha town.
Upon arrival, the first thing that struck me was the vibrant atmosphere. Families were laughing and playing in the cool, clear waters, and the air was filled with a sense of joy and relaxation. We quickly changed into our swimwear and joined in the fun. Leila was particularly excited about kayaking along the Chay River. As we paddled through the gentle currents, surrounded by the breathtaking scenery, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this precious family time. Greta captured some amazing photos of the landscape, her artistic eye finding beauty in every detail. I even tried the zipline, plunging into the refreshing water with a splash. It was exhilarating ! After our swim, we enjoyed a rustic, homestyle lunch at Hava's restaurant, savoring the local flavors of grilled chicken, crispy fried stream fish, and savory grilled meats. The food was simple yet delicious, perfectly complementing the natural ambiance of the valley. I must admit, the bean-infused sticky rice was a particular highlight. It reminded me of the simple, hearty meals back in Hilo.
The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.
After a refreshing afternoon in HaVa Valley, we packed our things and headed towards our next adventure: the Elephant Cave. The transition from the serene valley to the rugged jungle was quite stark, but equally exciting. I had read about the trek to Elephant Cave, so I knew we were in for a bit of a challenge. As we approached the trailhead, I double-checked our gear, making sure we had enough water and that Leila's little hiking boots were properly laced. The initial part of the trek was relatively easy, winding through lush vegetation and over small streams. However, as we ventured deeper into the jungle, the terrain became more challenging. The path was steep and rocky, requiring us to navigate carefully. I was glad I had packed those lightweight hiking boots; they were definitely put to the test.

About 20 minutes into the trek, the path became significantly steeper. I could feel my heart rate increasing as we climbed over large boulders and navigated through dense foliage. Leila, surprisingly, was keeping up quite well, her small legs moving with surprising agility. Greta, ever the supportive wife, offered words of encouragement and helped Leila over the trickier sections. As we finally reached the entrance of Elephant Cave, I was awestruck by its sheer size and grandeur. The cave's entrance is a massive opening in the side of the mountain, resembling the shape of an elephant's head. Stepping inside, we were immediately enveloped in cool, damp air. The darkness was intense, but our headlamps illuminated the path ahead. The cave was enormous, with towering stalactites and stalagmites forming intricate patterns on the walls. We explored the cave for about an hour, marveling at the unique formations and the sense of history that permeated the air. The cave is 60 meter high and 300 meters long.
Emerging from Elephant Cave, we were greeted by the warm glow of the setting sun. The sense of accomplishment was palpable as we made our way back to the car, our bodies tired but our spirits high. On the way back to our homestay, we stopped by Lá Store - Cho thuê đồ Boho/Vintage Phong Nha - Quảng Bình, a local shop I had spotted earlier in the day. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs to remind us of our time in Phong Nha. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-woven scarf for Greta and a small wooden elephant for Leila. I also grabbed a couple of locally made keychains for my parents back in Hilo. For dinner, we decided to try Son Doong Restaurant, known for its local cuisine. After a long day of adventure, we were all ravenous. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere. We ordered a variety of dishes, including Cao Lầu and some fresh spring rolls. The food was delicious, and we savored every bite. As we ate, we reminisced about the day's adventures, sharing stories and laughter. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Reflecting on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we shared as a family. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park has truly captured our hearts, and I am excited for what tomorrow holds. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Hang Trạ Ang and Núi Đôi Semiwild Enclosure, and maybe grab a beer at Pub with cold beer [in] the evening. It's hard to believe that our adventure is nearing its end, but I am determined to make the most of every remaining moment. As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but smile, knowing that we are creating memories that will last a lifetime. Aloha and goodnight from Phong Nha!
