Solo Exploration of Portugal's Ria Formosa Natural Park
Day 5: A Day of Serenity and Flavors in Ria Formosa
Explore Ria Formosa's boardwalk, savor local cuisine, and embrace the park's tranquility on a solo adventure, discovering hidden gems.
Finding Peace on the Ria Formosa Boardwalk
Today was a day of simple pleasures and quiet reflection here in the Ria Formosa Natural Park. It's amazing how much you can appreciate the small things when you're traveling solo. I was really looking forward to enjoying the natural beauty of the park, and today did not disappoint.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Casa Velha. Nestled in Quinta do Lago, the restaurant exudes a timeless charm and natural elegance. I opted for a traditional Portuguese breakfast, savoring the fresh flavors and strong coffee while overlooking the Ria Formosa. The restaurant has returned to its Portuguese roots, offering a delicious and fresh menu where local produce shines. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the atmosphere was just perfect for starting the day on a positive note. Sourcing ingredients from local suppliers and Q Farm, Quinta do Lago's vegetable garden, Casa Velha provides seasonal ingredients for the resort's restaurants all year round.

After breakfast, I decided to take a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk. The Quinta do Lago Boardwalk is a 5km linear coastal path that starts near Praia do Ancão and connects to the São Lourenço and Ludo Trail via Praia da Quinta do Lago. The air was crisp and clean, and the views of the lagoons were simply breathtaking. The boardwalk meandered through diverse ecosystems, and I took my time observing the local flora and fauna. I even spotted a few migratory birds, which was a treat for someone who grew up surrounded by the unique wildlife of Hawaii. It was so peaceful, a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Berlin. It’s amazing how nature can center you, reminding you of what truly matters. I made a mental note to bring Greta and Leila here someday; they would absolutely love it. The Ria Formosa Natural Park stretches for close to 60 kilometers along the southeastern coast of Portugal, from Faro to Tavira.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the simplest moments, like a quiet walk along a boardwalk with the sun on your face.
Next on my agenda was a boat tour with Formosamar - Boat Tours Passeios na Ria Formosa. I've always felt a deep connection to the ocean, growing up in Hilo, and I was eager to explore the Ria Formosa from the water. The tour was fantastic! Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the park's ecosystem, pointing out various bird species and explaining the history of the area. Formosamar excels in offering a variety of excursions tailored to nature lovers and adventure seekers. I chose a tour that focused on the stunning marine life and captivating landscapes. The vibrant tours, led by experienced guides, allow visitors to explore the intricate channels and picturesque islands of Ria Formosa. I learned so much about the park's conservation efforts, which resonated deeply with my passion for sustainability and ocean conservation. The boat was comfortable, and the small group size made for a more intimate and engaging experience.

By lunchtime, I had worked up quite an appetite. I headed to Sal'Mare for a bite to eat. This beach restaurant is located on Praia de Faro, between Quinta do Lago and Faro airport. With lovely tropical music, Sal'Mare creates a unique atmosphere. I decided on grilled seafood, wanting to taste the local flavors. The food was delicious, and the view of the ocean was unbeatable. It was the perfect spot to relax and soak in the beauty of the Algarve coastline. I savored every moment, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such a beautiful place.

In the late afternoon, I made my way to Restaurante Alambique for dinner. The restaurant is located in Corgo da Zorra, on the road from Quinta do Lago to Vale do Lobo. Despite its minimal presence on social media, visitors share positive impressions, mentioning a memorable dining experience and attentive service. The atmosphere was cozy and traditional, with a focus on the quality of the food. I enjoyed a hearty meal of traditional Portuguese cuisine, reflecting on the day's adventures. It was a satisfying end to a day filled with natural beauty and culinary delights.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Columbus, a local bar. It was a great place to unwind and enjoy a drink. I met some friendly locals and chatted about their experiences living in the Algarve. It's always interesting to hear different perspectives and learn about the local culture. I even picked up a few new Portuguese phrases, adding to my ongoing effort to learn the language.
