A Day of Discovery in Ria Formosa

Today was a delightful mix of nature, culture, and a touch of retail therapy. The Algarve continues to surprise me with its diverse offerings, and I'm excited to share my experiences from today's adventures in and around Ria Formosa Natural Park.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Limoni Quinta do Lago. The Italian gourmet restaurant is nestled among the lush greenery of Vale dos Pinheiros. From the moment I walked in, I was charmed by the elegant yet informal ambiance. It felt like a little piece of Italy in the heart of the Algarve. I enjoyed a delightful breakfast that set the perfect tone for the day ahead.

Fueled up and ready to go, my first stop was Salinas do Grelha. Located in Bela Mandil, Olhão, these traditional salt pans offer a fascinating glimpse into the age-old techniques of sea salt harvesting. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of the sea and the earth. I learned about the process of extracting sea salt and the prized 'flor de sal' – the flower of salt. It was incredible to see how nature and human ingenuity work together to create this essential commodity. The primary season for salt production is from May to September, and visitors can take guided tours all year round. While I was there, I observed various marine birds in their natural habitat within the Ria Formosa Natural Park. I was tempted to try the 'Dead Sea' bathing experience in a salt lake, but I decided to save that for another visit.

Next on the agenda was the Stork and Cormorant Rookery. As a lover of nature, this was a must-see. The rookery was teeming with life, a symphony of squawks and flapping wings filling the air. I spent a good hour observing these magnificent birds in their natural habitat, marveling at their intricate nests and their effortless flight. It was a reminder of the incredible biodiversity that Ria Formosa Natural Park is dedicated to protecting.

Lunchtime found me at The Bold Octopus, a beach restaurant and bar with stunning views of Quinta do Lago, the Ria Formosa, and the Atlantic Ocean. The location is truly special, right in the heart of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. I opted for a table on the rooftop bar, where I could soak in the panoramic views while enjoying my meal. The Thai red curry came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. The Bold Octopus seems to be a popular spot, known for its great atmosphere, delicious snacks, and cocktails.

With my appetite satisfied, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at MAR Shopping Algarve. This massive shopping center boasts a wide array of shops, restaurants, and leisure activities. I picked up a few souvenirs for Greta and Leila, as well as a couple of new shirts for myself. The shopping center is open from 10:00 to 23:00 every day. It's more than just a mall; it’s a place for events, concerts, and local activities. There’s even a supervised play area for children called the Lego Fan Factory.

For dinner, I ventured to Olhão to dine at Restaurante Olhão - Restaurante Ria Formosa. This restaurant is known for its Mediterranean and Portuguese cuisine. I decided to try the seafood rice, a local specialty, and it was absolutely delicious. The restaurant has received positive reviews for its tasty food and pleasant atmosphere. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Boardwalk and take a boat tour with Formosamar - Boat Tours Passeios na Ria Formosa. I'm looking forward to seeing more of the park's stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife. I might even stop by Columbus for a drink in the evening. It’s hard to believe that this trip is already halfway over, but I’m determined to make the most of every moment.

Reflecting on today, I'm reminded of the importance of embracing new experiences and appreciating the beauty that surrounds us. Whether it's the intricate process of salt harvesting, the majestic flight of a stork, or the simple pleasure of a delicious meal, there's always something to discover and celebrate. As I continue my solo exploration of Ria Formosa Natural Park, I'm excited to see what other wonders await me.

The Ria Formosa continues to inspire me. It is a true gem, and I am grateful for the opportunity to experience its beauty and learn about its rich natural and cultural heritage. I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures!

I am also reminded of my family back in Berlin. I miss Greta and Leila dearly, and I can't wait to share my experiences with them when I return. Perhaps we can plan a family trip to the Algarve in the future, so they can experience the magic of Ria Formosa for themselves. Until then, I will continue to explore and document my solo journey, sharing my discoveries with all of you.

I must also remember to buy a portable charger and a rain jacket at MAR Shopping Algarve tomorrow, as I forgot to pack them. It's always the little things that can make a big difference when you're traveling. I am glad that I brought my camera, binoculars, hiking boots, reusable water bottle, sunscreen, and notebook, as they have all been essential for my exploration of the park.

The Ria Formosa has a lot of activities, such as boat tours, birdwatching tours, island tours, and hiking trails. The Ria Formosa is also home to the Portuguese Water Dog. There are also festivals that celebrate the Ria Formosa. There is the Festa da Ria Formosa, which celebrates the culture and biodiversity of the park. The Ria Formosa Natural Park is truly a special place, and I am so glad that I decided to come here on my solo adventure. I am also glad that I was able to share my experiences with all of you, and I hope that you will be inspired to visit this beautiful park someday.

I’m excited for tomorrow’s boat tour, especially since I’ve heard that you can spot the rare Purple Swamphen, which has become a symbol of the park. I’ll be sure to keep my eyes peeled and my camera ready!

It’s time for some rest so I can be ready for another day of exploration. Until tomorrow, aloha!
