Solo Exploration of Portugal's Ria Formosa Natural Park
Day 11: Farewell to Ria Formosa: A Day of History, Beaches, and Sunset Reflections
Concluding my solo journey in Ria Formosa with Caíque Bom Sucesso, Praia da Rocha's beauty, and savoring final Portuguese flavors.
A Fond Farewell to Ria Formosa
As my solo journey through the Ria Formosa Natural Park draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past eleven days. This final day was a blend of historical immersion, beachside relaxation, and culinary delights, perfectly encapsulating the essence of this beautiful region. It's amazing how much a place can imprint itself on your soul in such a short time.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Ria Formosa. I savored the traditional Portuguese flavors, fueling up for a day of exploration. The rooftop setting offered breathtaking views of Faro's Old Town and the serene Ria Formosa Natural Park, a perfect start to the day. Chef Alberto Carvalho's culinary expertise was evident in every bite, making it a truly unforgettable experience. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes back in Berlin, perhaps adding a Hawaiian twist to honor my roots.
After breakfast, I set out to explore the Caíque Bom Sucesso. This historic fishing boat holds a significant place in Portuguese history, and seeing a replica of the ship that sailed to Brazil in 1808 to inform King D. Joao VI about the expulsion of French invaders was truly inspiring. The boat is moored along Olhão harbor. It was a humbling experience to stand on its deck, imagining the bravery and determination of those fishermen. It reminded me of the courage it took for my ancestors to journey across the Pacific to Hawaii.

Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those that connect us to the past, grounding us in the present, and inspiring us for the future.
Next on the agenda was Praia da Rocha. Located in Portimão, this beach is renowned for its spectacular rock formations and golden sands. The name Praia da Rocha literally means 'Rocky Beach,' and the towering red cliffs certainly live up to the name. I spent hours strolling along the shore, soaking up the sun, and marveling at the stunning coastal scenery. The beach was lively, with families, couples, and solo travelers all enjoying the beautiful weather. I even spotted some younger tourists who seemed ready to enjoy the nightlife that Praia da Rocha is known for. I found a quiet spot to sit and sketch in my notebook, capturing the vibrant colors of the cliffs and the shimmering turquoise of the ocean. It was the perfect opportunity to reflect on my journey and appreciate the natural beauty surrounding me.

For lunch, I indulged in a delightful meal at Casa do Lago. This iconic lakeside restaurant offered a relaxed beach vibe and fabulous views across the Ria Formosa. The white wooden decor, adorned with splashes of Algarve blue, created a chic and inviting atmosphere. I savored fresh seafood, including lobster, which was an absolute treat. The views were simply breathtaking, with the banks and waterways of the Ria Formosa stretching out before me. It was the perfect setting to unwind and enjoy the flavors of the Algarve.

As the day drew to a close, I headed to BARIA for a pre-dinner drink. This bar offered a relaxed atmosphere and stunning views of the Ria Formosa. I sipped on a local wine, savoring the moment and reflecting on my incredible journey. It was a bittersweet feeling, knowing that my time in Ria Formosa was coming to an end.

For my final dinner in Ria Formosa, I chose Restaurante Estaminé. Located on Ilha Deserta, this unique restaurant is accessible only by boat, adding to its charm. The setting was truly magical, with panoramic views of the ocean and the Ria Formosa Natural Park. The restaurant itself is a wooden, modernist structure, rebuilt in 2021 after a fire. It's also a hub for solar energy production and water treatment, showcasing a commitment to sustainability. The menu is curated from recipes passed down through generations, highlighting the indigenous flavors of the region. I enjoyed fresh fish and seafood, prepared with traditional Algarve techniques. It was the perfect way to end my culinary journey through Ria Formosa.

As I prepare to leave this beautiful region, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I've had and the memories I've made. The Ria Formosa Natural Park is a truly special place, and I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to explore its diverse ecosystems, immerse myself in its local culture, and witness its conservation efforts firsthand. I'm already looking forward to returning someday, perhaps with Greta and Leila, to share the magic of Ria Formosa with them. I know Leila would especially love learning about the Portuguese Water Dog, a breed native to these shores!
Tomorrow, I head back to Berlin, carrying with me the warmth of the Portuguese sun, the taste of fresh seafood, and the inspiration to continue my work in sustainability and ocean conservation. This solo adventure has been a reminder of the importance of connecting with nature, embracing new cultures, and reflecting on our place in the world. Mahalo, Ria Formosa, for the unforgettable journey.
Before I close out this chapter, I wanted to share a few thoughts about the essentials I brought along. My camera and binoculars were invaluable for capturing the stunning landscapes and diverse birdlife. My hiking boots were essential for exploring the park's trails, and my reusable water bottle and sunscreen were crucial for staying hydrated and protected from the sun. However, I did forget a portable charger and a rain jacket, which would have been helpful on a couple of occasions. Lesson learned for my next adventure!
As I pack my bags, I'm already dreaming of my next travel destination. Perhaps I'll explore more of Europe, or maybe I'll venture further afield to a new continent. Wherever I go, I'll be sure to share my experiences with you all on Evendo. Stay tuned for more travel adventures!
And with that, I bid farewell to the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Until next time, aloha!
