Solo Exploration of Portugal's Ria Formosa Natural Park
Day 10: Delving into History and Retail Therapy in Ria Formosa
Exploring Roman ruins at Cerro da Vila, wandering through Faro's Cidade Velha, and indulging in Algarve's shopping scene.
Echoes of the Past, Treasures of the Present
Today was a delightful blend of historical exploration and modern indulgence. From ancient Roman settlements to the charming streets of Faro's old town, and finally, a foray into the vibrant shopping scene of the Algarve, it was a day of contrasts that painted a vivid picture of this beautiful region. I started the day with a hearty breakfast at The Bold Octopus, enjoying the sea view while preparing for the day's adventures.
My first stop was Cerro da Vila - Roman Village, the Roman village near Vilamoura. As someone who appreciates history, especially when it intertwines with the natural world, I was eager to explore this site. It's amazing to think that as early as 27 BC, the Romans had already established a significant presence here. Walking through the remnants of the villa, I could almost picture the bustling life of its inhabitants.
Explore the historic Cerro da Vila, a Roman village in Quarteira, where ancient ruins and beautiful mosaics tell the story of a bygone era.
The Algarve region was integrated into the Province of Lusitania, divided into three districts: Balsa (Luz de Tavira), Ossonoba (Faro), and Ciuitas (Silves or Lagos). Cerro da Vila, in the Ossonoba territory, even had its own port. I wandered among the remaining partitions, imagining the impluvium, atrium, and tablinum, trying to piece together the layout of the residences and bathhouse. Though only fragments of the floor mosaics have survived, they offered a glimpse into the artistry of the time.
The archeological site showcases remnants of villas and baths, offering insights into the daily lives of the Romans who once lived there. The site is set against the backdrop of lush greenery, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. I learned that after the Romans, the Visigoths and Moors also occupied the villa, with Moorish silos found inside the Roman houses. This continuous occupation speaks volumes about the strategic importance and livability of the location.
History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.
Next on my itinerary was Cidade Velha, the old town of Faro. Leaving Vilamoura, I drove towards Faro, excited to explore this historic district. Cidade Velha is known for its well-preserved architecture and rich cultural heritage. As I walked through the cobbled streets, I was immediately transported back in time. The medieval walls, geometric public squares, and quaint cafes created an atmosphere of timeless charm.

Faro’s history is turbulent, having been damaged by English raids and almost destroyed during the earthquake of 1755. Yet, it has been rebuilt and restored, now boasting museums, churches, and monuments. The main entrance to the Old Town is the Arco da Vila, an opulent neoclassical gate. Passing through it felt like stepping into a different era.
I visited Faro Cathedral, an architectural masterpiece dating back to the 13th century. Built on the ruins of a Roman temple, Visigoth church, and Moorish mosque, it stands as a testament to the layers of history that define Faro. The cathedral houses a small museum with paintings, sculptures, and vestments.
Walking through Cidade Velha, I was struck by the blend of cultures that have shaped Faro over the centuries. The Romans, Visigoths, Moors, and Portuguese have all left their mark, creating a unique cultural tapestry. I paused to enjoy a coffee at a local café, soaking in the atmosphere and watching the world go by.
After immersing myself in history, it was time for some retail therapy. I headed to Algarve Shopping, a large mall in Guia, near Albufeira. With over 127 stores, including popular brands like Zara, H&M, and C&A, it was a shopper's paradise. The mall's architecture has hints of Portuguese style with its white, blue, and red facade.

Algarve Shopping is more than just a place to buy things. It's a social hub with a cinema, food court, and even a playground for children. The open-air design allows you to enjoy the Algarvian weather while indulging in some serious retail therapy. I browsed through the stores, picking up a few souvenirs for Greta and Leila, and a new lens for my camera.
I had lunch at Restaurante Alambique, known for its traditional Portuguese flavors. The menu features a selection of starters, mains, and desserts, all made with fresh, local ingredients. I started with the prawn pancakes, followed by the stroganoff. For dessert, I couldn't resist the crepes Suzette, flambéed tableside with orange liqueur. It was a culinary experience that delighted my senses.

The shopping center borrows from traditional Portuguese architecture with colorful facades. The upper floor is outdoors with restaurants and cafés. I found brands such as Zara, Pull and Bear, Lefties, Calzedonia, H&M, C&A and Sport Zone. There is also a Continente hypermarket.
Before heading back to my guesthouse, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Restaurante Limoni Quinta do Lago. This Italian restaurant is known for its romantic setting and excellent food. The ambiance was elegant but informal, with high ceilings, a cherub fountain, and hand-painted features.

I started with the beef carpaccio, followed by the spaghetti al pomodoro. The flavors were authentic and delicious, a true taste of Italy in the heart of the Algarve. The service was impeccable, with Thiago and Manuel making me feel welcome and attended to.
As I enjoyed my meal, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the ancient ruins of Cerro da Vila to the charming streets of Cidade Velha and the bustling shops of Algarve Shopping, it had been a day of contrasts and discoveries. The Algarve is a region that seamlessly blends history, culture, and modernity, offering something for every traveler.
Tomorrow is my last day in Ria Formosa, and I plan to make the most of it by visiting Caíque Bom Sucesso and Praia da Rocha. I'm also looking forward to dining at Restaurante Ria Formosa for breakfast, Casa do Lago for lunch, and Restaurante Estaminé for a final dinner. I might even check out BARIA for a nightcap. It's bittersweet to think that my solo exploration is coming to an end, but I'm grateful for the experiences and memories I've made here.
As I returned to my guesthouse, I felt a sense of contentment. The Algarve had captured my heart with its beauty, history, and warmth. I couldn't wait to share my experiences with Greta and Leila, and perhaps plan a return trip with them in the future.
I'm also mindful of my promise to bring Leila a piece of Portugal, so I will need to keep my eye out for something special tomorrow.
And, of course, I can't forget that I still need to find a portable charger before I leave. It would have been useful today, but I managed without it. Hopefully, I will remember to pack a rain jacket next time as well. For now, I'm grateful for the memories I've made and the experiences I've had.
The sun has set, painting the sky with hues of orange and purple. It's time to rest and recharge for one last day of exploration in this beautiful corner of Portugal.
Aloha and goodnight, friends.
