Discover the enchanting trulli of Alberobello and the mystical Grotta di Sant'Oronzo on a captivating day trip through Puglia's heart.
Trulli Magical Alberobello
Today was like stepping into a fairytale! Hans and I explored Alberobello, a place I've only dreamed of seeing. The unique trulli, with their conical roofs, created a whimsical atmosphere that was truly captivating. It felt like walking through a storybook, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder at every turn.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at L'Antica Locanda. The cozy atmosphere and traditional Apulian dishes were the perfect start to our adventure. I savored the fresh local ingredients, and Hans enjoyed a strong Italian coffee, fueling us for the day ahead.

After breakfast, we wandered into the heart of Alberobello. The Rione Monti district was bustling with activity. Little shops selling local crafts and souvenirs lined the streets, each housed within a charming trullo. I couldn't resist popping into The Smallest Trulli of Alberobello - Artesan Shop. It was indeed tiny, but packed with unique, handmade treasures. I picked up a few miniature trulli replicas as keepsakes.

The beauty of Alberobello lies not just in its unique architecture, but in the feeling of stepping into a living, breathing story.
We strolled through the Rione Aia Piccola, a quieter, more residential area with over 400 trulli. It offered a glimpse into the authentic life of the town, away from the tourist crowds. It was fascinating to see how these ancient structures are still used as homes today. The absence of souvenir shops gave it a more genuine feel, allowing us to appreciate the simple beauty of the trulli.
Later, we had lunch at U.P.E.P.I.D.D.E. Restaurant. The name was certainly a mouthful, but the food was delicious! We enjoyed traditional Apulian cuisine, savoring the flavors of the region. Hans particularly enjoyed the orecchiette pasta, a local specialty.

In the afternoon, we ventured to the Grotta di Sant'Oronzo, near the town of Turi. The cave was a cool respite from the August heat. The stalactites and stalagmites created a mystical atmosphere, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the natural beauty. The cave has also been a site of worship throughout the ages, adding to its historical significance.

Back in Alberobello, as the day drew to a close, we enjoyed dinner at Osteria Del Tempo Perso. The restaurant's cave-like atmosphere was enchanting, and the food was a delightful blend of traditional and modern Apulian cuisine. The spaghetti with clams was delicious. For dessert, we shared a tiramisu, which was heavenly.

Before heading back, we took a stroll to Villa Comunale Belvedere Parco for a panoramic view of Alberobello. The sight of the trulli bathed in the warm evening light was simply breathtaking. It was the perfect way to end our day in this magical town.
Tomorrow, we're off to explore the Cave of Poetry and Parco Naturale Regionale Terra delle Gravine. I'm excited to see what other hidden gems Puglia has in store for us! I am particularly looking forward to breakfast at Masseria Il Frantoio. I've heard wonderful things about their farm-to-table offerings. I’m also hoping to find some unique libations at Alchemy Bar and Things!
Even though I missed packing my swimsuit, the warm weather made it easy to wear summer dresses and sandals. I'm making a note to buy an adapter for Italian power sockets. It would be useful to have one for our next stays at hotels.
Today was a day of pure enchantment, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that exists in the world. Alberobello is a place that will forever hold a special place in my heart.
P.S. I was so inspired by the trulli that I started sketching some ideas for a sustainable housing project back in Heidelberg. Maybe Hans and I can incorporate some of these unique architectural elements into our future designs!
I am grateful for the opportunity to experience such unique and beautiful places, and I am excited to share my experiences with you all. Stay tuned for more adventures from Puglia!
