First Impressions of Puglia's Capital

After months of planning, Hans and I finally touched down in Bari, ready to explore the enchanting region of Puglia! As a software developer with a penchant for sustainable travel, I was eager to see how this corner of Italy blended its rich history with modern life. Plus, traveling with Hans always makes the journey extra special. Our first day was a whirlwind of ancient streets, stunning architecture, and mouthwatering cuisine, giving us a taste of what this beautiful region has to offer.

Our adventure began as soon as we landed at Bari Airport. After grabbing our rental car, we navigated our way to the heart of the city, ready to immerse ourselves in its vibrant atmosphere. The August sun was warm and inviting, a perfect welcome to southern Italy. I couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement as we parked the car and set off on foot, ready to explore Bari Vecchia.

Wandering Through Bari Vecchia

Bari Vecchia, the old town, was our first stop, and it felt like stepping back in time. The narrow, winding streets were a maze of quintessential Apulian charm, with traditional restaurants and lovely churches dotting the landscape. Locals were chatting outside their doors, adding to the authentic vibe of the neighborhood. We took our time, soaking in the atmosphere and snapping photos of the picturesque scenes around every corner. The energy of the old town was infectious, and I knew instantly that we were in for an unforgettable trip.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing them fully, engaging with the local culture, and savoring every moment.

One of the first landmarks we encountered was the Basilica di San Nicola. Although we didn't go inside, the exterior was impressive, and the square in front of it was bustling with activity. We wandered through the area, discovering hidden gems and feeling the pulse of the city. It was a feast for the senses, from the aroma of fresh bread wafting from a nearby bakery to the sound of children playing in the piazzas.

Architectural Marvel: Palazzo dell'Acquedotto Pugliese

Next on our list was the Palazzo dell'Acquedotto Pugliese, a stunning example of early 20th-century architecture. This building, which serves as the headquarters for the Apulian Aqueduct, is a monument to the historic conquest of water, a resource that Puglia had always lacked. Designed by Cesare Vittorio Brunetti, the palace combines elements of Apulian Romanesque architecture with Italian Art Nouveau decorations.

We admired the exterior, noting the intricate details and the grandeur of the structure. The white stone of Trani, used for the exterior, was a deliberate nod to the Romanesque style of the region. Although we couldn't tour the inside today, I learned that the interior decorations, including paintings, mosaics, and furnishings, were inspired by the theme of water and created by Duilio Cambellotti, a prominent figure in Italian Art Nouveau. It’s a place I'd love to explore further if we have the chance.

A Chic Breakfast and a Sumptuous Lunch

Our culinary journey began with breakfast at La Chicca Restaurant. This charming spot was the perfect place to start our day. I opted for a classic Italian breakfast of cappuccino and a pastry, while Hans enjoyed a more substantial meal of eggs and local cheese. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the service was excellent. It was a delightful way to fuel up for our day of exploration.

For lunch, we ventured to Ciacco E Bacco - Ristorante e Sala Ricevimenti, located a bit outside the city center. The drive was worth it, as this restaurant offered a true taste of Apulian cuisine. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by homemade pasta with fresh tomatoes and basil. The flavors were vibrant and authentic, a testament to the region's culinary heritage. Hans, ever the wine enthusiast, chose a local red wine that perfectly complemented our meal. The restaurant itself had a lovely ambiance, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying the delicious food.

Grotta Palazzese: Dinner in a Cave

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Polignano a Mare, a coastal town famous for its dramatic cliffs and the Grotta Palazzese restaurant. This unique dining experience is located inside a natural cave overlooking the Adriatic Sea. It's one of the most exclusive and atmospheric places I've ever seen. Dinner at Grotta Palazzese was nothing short of magical. The restaurant is nestled in a cave, with the sea providing a stunning backdrop. The sound of the waves crashing against the rocks added to the ambiance, creating an unforgettable dining experience. The menu featured fresh seafood and local specialties, each dish expertly prepared and beautifully presented. I savored every bite, knowing that this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Evening Cocktails at Speakeasy Bari

To cap off our first day, we headed back to Bari and sought out Speakeasy Bari, a popular cocktail bar known for its creative drinks and lively atmosphere. Located along the waterfront, this bar pays homage to the clandestine bars of America's Prohibition era. The ever-changing drink menu features cocktails crafted with local ingredients.

The bar had a cozy and intimate vibe, with a mix of locals and tourists. The bartenders were skilled mixologists, creating unique and flavorful cocktails. I tried a local specialty, while Hans opted for a classic Negroni. The drinks were expertly made, and the atmosphere was perfect for unwinding after a busy day. It was a great way to end our first day in Puglia, soaking in the local nightlife and enjoying each other's company.

As we sipped our drinks, we chatted about our plans for tomorrow. We're heading to Alberobello to see the famous trulli, and I’m particularly excited to visit Grotta di Sant'Oronzo. It’s going to be another day filled with exploration and adventure, and I can’t wait to share it with you all.
