Farewell, Puglia!

As our Puglian adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we’ve had. Today was a day of diving deep into the region's history and savoring its unique culinary offerings. It's amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you're determined to soak up every last drop of a place’s essence.

Our final day in Puglia began with a delightful breakfast at DA LUCIANO - La Puglia dentro in Polignano A Mare. It was a vibrant start to the day. I opted for a cornetto, while Hans enjoyed a panino. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the Parco rupestre Lama d'Antico near Fasano.

The Parco rupestre Lama d'Antico was truly awe-inspiring. This cave settlement, nestled in a shallow canyon, revealed a history stretching back to the 16th century BC. Walking through the ancient village, with its cave homes and rock-carved churches adorned with frescoes, felt like stepping back in time. The sheer ingenuity and resilience of the people who once inhabited these spaces left me in awe. Hans, ever the architect, was particularly fascinated by the structural elements of the cave dwellings and the integration of the natural landscape into their design.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest of places, where history whispers through the stones.

After immersing ourselves in the ancient history of Lama d'Antico, we drove to Putignano to explore the Grotta del Trullo. This karst cave, the first in Puglia to be used for tourism, was a mesmerizing display of stalactites and stalagmites. The cave’s unique geological formations, including the rare “milk of the mountain,” were truly remarkable. The guided tour was informative, detailing the cave's discovery in 1931 and its subsequent development as a tourist site. I found myself marveling at the delicate balance of nature that created such a stunning underground world.

For lunch, we headed to Le Nicchie in Bari. This restaurant offered a delightful array of Puglian dishes. We started with the house special, a selection of typical appetizers including parmigiana, seafood salad and burrata. For our main courses, Hans chose the grilled fish, while I opted for the pasta with seafood. The meal was a perfect reflection of Puglia's culinary heritage, with fresh, locally sourced ingredients prepared with care.

In the late afternoon, we enjoyed a few drinks at Luau Tiki Bar in Putignano. This bar, with its exotic décor and tropical cocktails, provided a fun and relaxing atmosphere. Hans tried one of their signature rum-based cocktails, while I enjoyed a refreshing drink with local citrus flavors. The bar's dedication to recreating the tiki culture of the 1930s added a unique touch to our evening.

Our final dinner in Puglia was at Tracce in Gravina in Puglia. This restaurant, nestled in the heart of Gravina, is known for its authentic Apulian cuisine and charming atmosphere. We savored a delightful array of seafood dishes, including exquisite antipasti and mouthwatering pasta with crustacean sauce. The chef's commitment to quality and traditional Italian cooking techniques was evident in every bite. The ambiance of the restaurant, with its historic architecture and cozy setting, made for a memorable last evening in Puglia.

As I reflect on our time in Puglia, I’m filled with gratitude for the experiences we’ve shared. From exploring ancient cave dwellings to savoring the region's culinary delights, every moment has been a treasure. Puglia has captured my heart with its unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. I’m already dreaming of our next adventure, wherever it may lead.
