Safari Thrills and Forest Chills
Today was a day of contrasts, perfectly encapsulating the diverse experiences Puglia has to offer. From the excitement of a safari adventure to the peacefulness of a forest escape, it was a day filled with unforgettable moments. I'm so excited to share all the details!
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cucina Cefalicchio. The B&B is located in a charming, rustic setting, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. The breakfast was lovely, featuring homemade cakes that added a special touch to the morning. Hans and I enjoyed the quiet surroundings, a perfect start before our adventurous day.
After breakfast, we set off for Selva di Fasano, a beautiful hilltop area just outside of Fasano. The drive itself was stunning, with panoramic views of rolling hills and olive groves. As we ascended, the air became noticeably cooler, a refreshing change from the coastal heat. The pine forests offered a tranquil escape, inviting us to explore its numerous nature trails. We took a leisurely walk, enjoying the fresh air and the scent of pine.
Selva di Fasano, known as the Balcony on the East, offers a strategic position with mild climate and rich biodiversity. The area is perfect for trekking, walking, cycling and birdwatching. We chose an easy trail, suitable for a relaxing stroll, and immersed ourselves in the beauty of the forest. The Minaret of Fasano, an exotic villa built in Moorish style, added a touch of fantasy to the landscape. Although it's a private residence, seeing its slender tower and horseshoe arches evoked images of distant lands.

After our refreshing walk, it was time for the main event: Zoosafari Fasanolandia. Being the second-largest drive-through zoo in Europe, I knew we were in for a treat. The excitement was palpable as we joined the queue of cars eager to enter the safari.
The drive-through safari was an incredible experience. Animals roamed freely around our car, seemingly unfazed by our presence. We purchased some carrots at the entrance, and it turned out to be a brilliant idea. Zebras, camels, and giraffes approached our car, hoping for a treat. Feeding the giraffes was a highlight; they were so gentle and amusing. Hans was initially a bit nervous, but he quickly warmed up to the experience, laughing as a giraffe nudged his hand in search of more carrots.
Driving through lion and tiger country was equally thrilling. Seeing these magnificent creatures up close, without any barriers, was an unforgettable experience. The safari is well-maintained, and the animals appear happy and comfortable in their environment.
After the safari, we explored the Fasanolandia amusement park, which is included in the Zoosafari ticket. We enjoyed a few rides, adding an extra dose of fun to our day. Although the amusement park felt a bit out of place compared to the safari, it was still an enjoyable experience. The combination of wildlife exploration and amusement attractions makes Zoosafari Fasanolandia a unique destination.
Sometimes, the best days are the ones filled with unexpected adventures and serene moments, creating a perfect balance of excitement and relaxation.
For lunch, we headed to La Murgiana in Fasano. This osteria is known for its traditional Apulian cuisine and warm hospitality. We opted for the tasting menu, which included a series of local appetizers, pasta dishes, and a meat course. Each dish was prepared with fresh, local ingredients, showcasing the flavors of the region. The staff was attentive and friendly, making us feel right at home. Hans particularly enjoyed the pasta with wild fennel, while I savored the grilled lamb.
After such an eventful day, we decided to indulge in a bit of shopping. We stopped by Libellula Group SRL, a shop known for its exquisite pottery and unique souvenirs in Polignano a Mare. Although the shop was in Fasano, not Polignano a Mare, we found a treasure trove of artistic craftsmanship. I picked up a hand-painted ceramic bowl, a perfect reminder of our trip to Puglia. Hans chose a traditional Apulian whistle, promising to learn how to play it.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Ristorante Ubi Maior for dinner. Located in Ruvo di Puglia, this restaurant is celebrated for its authentic Italian cuisine and dedication to fresh, local ingredients. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, blending rustic charm with modern touches. We started with homemade pasta, followed by grilled fish, and ended with a delectable dessert. The staff was eager to share their knowledge of the menu, recommending a perfect wine pairing to enhance our dining experience.
Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Puglia has to offer. From thrilling wildlife encounters to tranquil forest escapes and delightful culinary experiences, it's a region that truly captivates the senses. As we prepare for our final day in Puglia, I am filled with anticipation for what tomorrow holds. We plan to explore Parco rupestre Lama d'Antico and Grotta del Trullo in Putignano. And perhaps enjoy a drink at Luau Tiki Bar.
Tonight, as I write this, I'm already cherishing the memories we've made. Puglia has exceeded all expectations, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Good night from beautiful Puglia!
P.S. I almost forgot! I was so busy with the animals that I didn't take as many photos as I wanted. Note to self: always prioritize the camera, even when a giraffe is trying to steal a carrot!
