Exploring the Wonders of Iceland's Snaefellsnes Peninsula
Day 4: A Day of Legends and Coastal Beauty on Snaefellsnes
Exploring the mythical Bárður Snæfellsás, enjoying stunning coastal views, and savoring local flavors in Iceland's captivating Snaefellsnes.
Following the Legend of Bárður Snæfellsás
Today was a day steeped in Icelandic folklore and breathtaking scenery. Hans and I ventured further into the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, ready to embrace whatever adventures came our way. From serene rivers to dramatic coastlines, today was a feast for the senses and a journey into the heart of Icelandic legends.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hlaðan Veitingahús. I opted for the traditional skyr with berries and a sprinkle of granola, while Hans chose the smoked salmon with rye bread. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made it a delightful start to our Wednesday.
With our appetites satisfied, we set off towards the Dagverðará River. The drive itself was stunning, winding through lush green fields dotted with wildflowers. The river was a tranquil sight, its clear waters reflecting the sky above. We took a leisurely stroll along the bank, breathing in the fresh, crisp air. It was a moment of pure serenity, a welcome contrast to the sometimes dramatic Icelandic landscape.

Next on our itinerary was the Seagulls viewpoint. As we approached, the air filled with the cries of gulls circling overhead. The view was simply spectacular. Rugged cliffs plunged into the churning Atlantic Ocean, the waves crashing against the rocks below. We watched in awe as the gulls soared and dived, their white wings flashing in the sunlight. I couldn't resist snapping photos, trying to capture the wild beauty of this coastal vista. Hans, ever the architect, was fascinated by the geological formations of the cliffs.

The essence of Iceland lies not just in its landscapes, but in the stories woven into its very fabric.
Our next stop was the Bárður Snæfellsás Statue. I had read about Bárður in several Icelandic sagas, so seeing the statue was particularly exciting. The imposing figure, crafted from local stone, stood proudly against the backdrop of the Snæfellsjökull glacier. Bárður, a half-giant, half-human protector of the peninsula, is a prominent figure in Icelandic folklore. We spent some time admiring the statue and the surrounding area, imagining the ancient tales come to life. It was a powerful reminder of the rich history and mythology that permeates this land.

Lunch was at Bjargarsteinn Mathús in Grundarfjörður, a charming waterfront restaurant with a special history. We were lucky enough to get a table with a view of Mt. Kirkjufell. The menu focused on local products, and everything was made from scratch. I decided to try the seafood soup, while Hans opted for the lamb. Both dishes were absolutely delicious, showcasing the fresh flavors of Iceland. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made it a truly memorable meal.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to explore the area around Arnarstapi, known for its dramatic coastal scenery. We hiked along the cliffs, marveling at the basalt columns and unique rock formations. The views of the ocean and the Snæfellsjökull glacier were simply breathtaking. I felt a deep connection to nature, a sense of peace and wonder that is hard to describe.
For dinner, we chose Stapinn, a family-run restaurant also in Arnarstapi. It was a cozy place, perfect for a relaxed evening. The menu offered a variety of traditional Icelandic dishes, and we decided to share a platter of local delicacies. From smoked lamb to pickled herring, it was a culinary adventure that delighted our taste buds. We chatted with the friendly staff, learning more about the local culture and way of life.

To cap off the day, we ventured to Saltkjallarinn for a drink. The bar was located on Flatey Island, adding a unique charm to the experience. I decided to try the local specialty, a Flajito, made with rhubarb and lovage instead of the traditional lime and mint. It was a refreshing and surprisingly delicious concoction. Hans stuck with his usual Icelandic beer, savoring the unique flavors.

As we sipped our drinks, we reflected on the day's adventures. From serene rivers to dramatic coastlines, from ancient legends to culinary delights, it had been a truly unforgettable experience. The Snaefellsnes Peninsula had once again captivated us with its beauty and charm. I'm so glad that Hans is here with me to experience all of this. It makes it so much more special to share these moments with someone I love.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Landbrotalaug Hot Springs, discover unique lava rock formations, and visit the Súgandisey Island Lighthouse. I'm already excited to see what new adventures await us. I'm also looking forward to breakfast at Samkomuhúsið Arnarstapa and dinner at Hótel Snaefellsnes. Good night from Iceland!
Oh, and I made a note to buy some sunscreen tomorrow. My face is already feeling a bit sun-kissed, and I definitely don't want to forget that again. It's easy to do when you're lost in the beauty of Iceland!
I wonder if there are any local events happening around here that we should check out? Maybe we can find something fun to do before we leave the peninsula.
I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings! What about you?
Until next time,
Karen
