Chasing Geothermal Dreams & Coastal Beacons

Today, Hans and I embarked on a quintessentially Icelandic adventure, a blend of soothing geothermal waters, rugged landscapes, and the promise of panoramic views. It was a day filled with unexpected discoveries and the kind of serene beauty that stays with you long after you've left.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Samkomuhúsið Arnarstapa. I opted for the vegetable soup, remembering the glowing reviews I’d read. The waitress even asked if I wanted olive oil instead of butter with the homemade bread – so thoughtful! Hans went for the mashed fish, a local specialty. Fuelled up, we set off to find our first destination: the elusive Landbrotalaug Hot Springs.

Finding Landbrotalaug proved to be a bit of a treasure hunt. Tucked away off Route 54, it felt like we were venturing into Iceland’s best-kept secret. The landscape was classic Snaefellsnes – rolling hills, moss-covered lava fields stretching out as far as the eye could see. After a bit of a drive, we parked and walked across a shallow, marshy area to reach the springs. I was glad I had my waterproof hiking boots on!

The spring itself was tiny, barely enough room for two or three people. Luckily, we had it all to ourselves! The water was wonderfully warm, a perfect 38°C, and soaking in the geothermal waters surrounded by the stark beauty of the Icelandic landscape was pure bliss. It was a reminder of why I love slow travel – these moments of quiet immersion are so much more rewarding than rushing from one sight to the next. I made a mental note to bring sunscreen next time, though; even with the cool air, the Icelandic sun can be deceptively strong.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.

Refreshed and rejuvenated, we continued our journey, our next stop being the Lava Rocks Formations.

Located along Snæfellsnesvegur, the lava formations presented a landscape sculpted by centuries of volcanic activity and erosion. The stark, dark rocks contrasted beautifully with the bright green moss and the clear blue sky. We spent a good hour wandering through the formations, taking photos and marveling at the raw power of nature. I remembered reading about the Berserkjahraun lava field and its connection to the Eyrbyggja-Saga – it added a layer of history and mystique to the already captivating scenery.

As we drove, I couldn't help but reflect on how much this peninsula feels like a microcosm of all of Iceland. The dramatic landscapes, the charming villages, the sense of being utterly immersed in nature – it’s all here. It's easy to see why it's called Iceland in Miniature.

Our final stop for the day was Súgandisey Island Lighthouse in Stykkishólmur.

This charming town, with its colorful houses and bustling harbor, was a delight to explore. We drove to the island and parked before walking up the stairs that led to the lighthouse. The views from the top were simply stunning. We could see the town spread out below us, the harbor dotted with boats, and the vast expanse of Breiðafjörður stretching out to the horizon.

The lighthouse itself, originally built in 1948, has quite the history. It once stood in Grótta, near Reykjavík, before being moved here. Looking out from the top, I felt a sense of peace and tranquility. The wind was strong, but the views were more than worth it. I read that there's a sculpture at the base of Súgandisey called 'Draumurinn' or 'The Dream' by Þórarinn, but we missed it this time around. Something to look forward to next time!

Before dinner, we popped into Álfar og Tröll ehf in Grundarfjörður, a charming souvenir shop filled with locally made crafts and traditional Icelandic gifts.

I picked up a small, hand-knitted wool ornament to remind me of our time here. It's always nice to support local artisans and bring home something truly unique.

For dinner, we decided to try Hótel Snaefellsnes, known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious food.

The hotel itself seems like a hidden gem, with friendly staff and a menu that highlights fresh, local ingredients. It’s also a hub for locals, which is always a good sign. We both opted for seafood dishes, wanting to savor the flavors of the region. We weren't disappointed! The meal was the perfect end to a perfect day.

As I write this, back at our cozy accommodation, I’m already thinking about tomorrow. We plan to explore the Eldborg Crater Trailhead, marvel at the Sculptures of Rif, and visit the Snæfellsnes Visitor Center. And perhaps, if we’re lucky, we’ll find a cozy spot for a drink at the Ísey Skyr Bar. Until then, goodnight from Snaefellsnes!

I am grateful for the reminder of the simple things in life: warm water, beautiful scenery, and good company. I am so excited to see what tomorrow will bring.

The Snaefellsnes Peninsula has captured my heart. Its raw beauty, its sense of history, and its sheer tranquility make it a truly special place. I can't wait to see what other wonders it holds.
