Solo Adventure in Iceland: Discovering Snaefellsnes Peninsula
Day 5: Chasing Lighthouses and River Dreams: A Day of Icelandic Wonders
Exploring the Snaefellsnes Peninsula: Lighthouses, rivers, cozy cafes, and culinary delights. A perfect day of Icelandic adventure.
Beacon of Light and Flowing Serenity
Today was a day of simple pleasures and profound beauty. I traded the dramatic cliffs of yesterday for a gentle exploration of the peninsula’s northern coast, seeking out charming spots and savoring the quiet moments that make solo travel so rewarding. It’s amazing how much you can discover when you allow yourself to wander without a strict agenda.
My day began in Ólafsvík with breakfast at Sjávarkjallarinn. It wasn't the oldest cellar in Iceland as I first thought, that one is in Reykjavik, but the seafood dishes were amazing. The cozy atmosphere was the perfect start to a chilly morning. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the warmth and the promise of a new day of exploration.
Fueled and ready, I set off to visit the Súgandisey Island Lighthouse in Stykkishólmur. The drive itself was stunning, with snow-dusted fields stretching out to meet the sea. As I approached Stykkishólmur, the basalt island of Súgandisey stood proudly by the harbour, sheltering the town from the northern wind. I parked near the base and climbed the stairs leading to the top. The lighthouse, originally from Grótta, offered panoramic views of Breiðafjörður. The fresh air and the stunning vista were invigorating. I could see the town spread out below, a charming collection of colorful buildings nestled against the winter landscape.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
After soaking in the views from the lighthouse, I decided to take a leisurely drive along the coast, eventually making my way towards the Dagverðará River on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The river was serene, flowing through a landscape of rugged mountains and lush valleys. I parked the car and took a short walk along the riverbank, enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings. The area around Dagverðará is steeped in history, with an abandoned concrete house built in 1930 located nearby. The house, with its barn, was once home to around 20 people before being abandoned in 1971. I spent some time simply breathing in the crisp air and listening to the gentle murmur of the water.

For lunch, I headed to Bjargarsteinn Mathús in Hellnar, a restaurant I had read about that promised a unique dining experience with stunning views. The restaurant was originally built as a family home in Akranes in 1908 before being moved to its current location overlooking the water. I settled in with a bowl of their famous seafood soup, overflowing with fish and seafood. It was the perfect comfort food on such a chilly day.

After lunch, I took a walk around Hellnar, a charming village with a rich history. For centuries, it was one of the largest fishing villages beneath the Snæfellsjökull ice cap. The dramatic cliffs and the crashing waves provided a stunning backdrop for my walk.
Next on the agenda was a visit to RJÚK ANDI, a coffee shop in Hjardharfell. The cozy interior welcomed me, and I ordered a latte and a pastry, settling into a comfortable chair to enjoy the warmth and the atmosphere. RJÚK ANDI is more than just a coffee shop; it's a local gem where tourists and residents gather. I chatted with the friendly staff, learning a bit about the local culture and history. I'm trying to learn some Danish phrases, but Icelandic is quite different. Still, I managed a simple takk (thank you) as I left, feeling a bit more connected to this beautiful place.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Arnarstapi for dinner at Stapinn. This family-run restaurant offered a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. I ordered their famous fish and chips, and it was absolutely delicious. The batter was perfectly seasoned, and the fish was incredibly fresh. The friendly staff made the experience even better, creating a warm and inviting environment.

Before heading back, I took a short walk along the coast near Arnarstapi. The basalt columns and the dramatic cliffs were bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Landbrotalaug Hot Springs and Selvallafoss. I'm also planning to visit Narfeyrarstofa for a drink in the evening. I'm excited to see what new adventures await me as my solo journey continues.
Reflecting on today, I am reminded of why I love solo travel so much. It’s about the freedom to explore at my own pace, to discover hidden gems, and to connect with the world around me in a meaningful way. It's about embracing the unexpected and finding joy in the simple moments.
As I settle in for the night, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. The Snaefellsnes Peninsula has captured my heart with its stunning landscapes and its warm, welcoming people. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
I'm also reminded of Hans, and how much he would have loved this trip. I'll have to bring him back here sometime. I can already imagine us hiking together, him with his architect's eye appreciating the rock formations, and me snapping photos of everything that catches my eye. Maybe next winter, we can both escape Heidelberg for a bit of Icelandic magic.
For now, I'll drift off to sleep, dreaming of lighthouses, rivers, and the endless possibilities of the open road. And maybe I'll try to learn some Icelandic phrases before tomorrow's adventure!
Embark on a solo journey to Iceland's Snaefellsnes Peninsula, exploring glaciers, black sand beaches, and breathtaking landscapes.
