Icelandic Hot Springs and Hidden Gems
Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. With the promise of hidden hot springs and majestic waterfalls, I set out early, eager to soak in every moment of this solo adventure. It’s amazing how quickly Iceland can make you feel both incredibly small and utterly connected to something ancient and powerful.
My day began, as most do, with a hearty breakfast. I decided to try Hlaðan Veitingahús, and it was a great choice. Fuelled up, I was ready to explore.
First on the agenda was Landbrotalaug Hot Springs. The drive itself was stunning, a landscape of snow-dusted lava fields stretching as far as the eye could see. Finding Landbrotalaug felt like discovering a well-kept secret. The small pool, nestled amidst the stark winter landscape, was almost surreal. The air was crisp, the sky a soft grey, and the geothermal waters offered a welcome embrace against the cold. I had to be brave to strip off my clothes in the cold, but it was worth it.

The hot spring itself was an experience, sharing the small space with a couple of other travelers, we exchanged stories and travel tips, a brief but genuine connection formed in the shared warmth. It reminded me of the simple pleasures in life, the kind that often get overlooked in our busy routines back in Heidelberg.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand gestures, but in quiet moments of connection with nature and fellow travelers.
Leaving Landbrotalaug, I felt rejuvenated, ready for the next adventure. Lunch was calling, and I decided to grab something quick and local at Agnið streetfood in Stykkishólmur. I went for the fish tacos, and they were delicious. The fish was so fresh, it was amazing. It's these little culinary pit stops that really allow you to soak in the local culture. I made a mental note to try making something similar back home for Hans; he’d love it.
With a satisfied stomach, I set off towards Selvallafoss. The drive to Selvallafoss was beautiful, with the landscape opening up to reveal more of the peninsula’s rugged coastline. The waterfall was easy to access, and I was immediately struck by its serene beauty. What made it particularly special was the opportunity to walk behind the cascading water, an experience that felt both exhilarating and humbling. The sound of the water, the cool mist on my face, and the sheer power of nature surrounding me—it was a moment I won't soon forget.

I spent a good hour simply soaking in the atmosphere, taking photos, and reflecting on my journey so far. It’s moments like these that remind me why I started Evendo, my blog. To share these experiences, to inspire others to step outside their comfort zones and discover the world's hidden gems. I find that travelling solo really gives you the chance to appreciate the smaller details.
As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to a nice dinner at Hótel Snaefellsnes. The hotel had a great atmosphere, and the staff were very friendly. I opted for the fish of the day, eager to taste more of Iceland’s fresh seafood. The meal was delicious, the fish perfectly cooked, and the accompanying vegetables bursting with flavour. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and natural beauty.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I decided to check out Narfeyrarstofa, a local bar in Stykkishólmur, for a nightcap. The bar had a cozy, welcoming vibe, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the locals over a glass of Icelandic beer. It was interesting to hear their stories and perspectives on life in this remote corner of the world. I even picked up a few Icelandic phrases, much to their amusement.

As I sit here now, writing in my travel journal, I can’t help but feel grateful for the experiences of today. From the soothing waters of Landbrotalaug to the majestic cascade of Selvallafoss, every moment has been a reminder of the incredible beauty and serenity that Iceland has to offer. And to think, tomorrow is my last day here! I plan to visit Snæfellsnes and Vatnasafn, and maybe even do some souvenir shopping at Álfar og Tröll ehf before I head off.
This trip has been exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with nature, to challenge myself, and to find inspiration in the simplest of things. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand gestures, but in quiet moments of connection with nature and fellow travelers. And as I prepare to leave the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, I know that a piece of it will forever remain with me, a reminder of the magic and wonder that awaits those who dare to explore beyond the familiar.
Tomorrow, I will be heading back to Reykjavik, before flying back to Germany. I am looking forward to seeing Hans again, and telling him all about my trip. But I will definitely be back to Iceland again soon!
I'm already excited to share more stories and photos from my Icelandic adventure. Stay tuned for the next post!
Until then, takk fyrir (thank you) for following along!
Safe travels,
Karen
