A Fond Farewell to Snæfellsnes

As my final day on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I've undertaken this past week. It's hard to believe how quickly the time has flown by, each day bringing new adventures and breathtaking sights. This solo trip has been exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with nature, challenge myself, and soak in the serene beauty of Iceland.

The morning began with a hearty Icelandic breakfast at Lýsuhóll. I wanted to savor every last bite of the local flavors, knowing it would be a while before I could enjoy such authentic cuisine again. The rye bread was particularly memorable, its dense, slightly sweet taste a perfect complement to the savory toppings. I made sure to journal my thoughts and feelings about the trip while enjoying this meal, a practice I've found invaluable for processing my experiences.

My first stop of the day was a return to the heart of Snæfellsnes itself. I spent some time simply driving along the coastal roads, stopping at various viewpoints to capture the stunning scenery one last time. The peninsula, even under a sky threatening snow, held an undeniable allure. The dramatic cliffs, the crashing waves, and the ever-present Snæfellsjökull glacier looming in the distance – it's a landscape that etches itself into your memory.

The journey may be ending, but the memories and lessons learned will last a lifetime.

Next on my itinerary was Vatnasafn, the Library of Water in Stykkishólmur. This unique art installation, conceived by Roni Horn, is housed in a former library and features glass columns containing water collected from various glaciers around Iceland. The experience was incredibly moving, especially considering the impact of climate change on these precious natural resources. The Library of Water was open from 11:00-17:00 [Tuesday - Saturday during September - May], so I had plenty of time to explore.

The building stands on a promontory overlooking the ocean, offering panoramic views of the town. Inside, the exhibition reflected Horn's intimate involvement with Iceland's geography, geology, climate, and culture. The glass columns refracted and reflected light onto a rubber floor embedded with words in Icelandic and English related to the weather. I found myself lost in thought, contemplating the interconnectedness of nature and the importance of preserving our planet.

After immersing myself in the art and reflections at Vatnasafn, it was time for lunch. I headed to Stapinn, a family-run restaurant in Arnarstapi, known for its traditional Icelandic cuisine and stunning coastal views. I decided to try the Plokkfiskur, a hearty fish stew that was the perfect comfort food on a chilly day. As I enjoyed my meal, I watched the waves crashing against the cliffs, feeling a sense of peace and contentment wash over me.

In the afternoon, I made a stop at Álfar og Tröll ehf, a charming gift shop in Grundarfjörður. I wanted to find a special souvenir to remember my trip, something that captured the essence of Iceland's culture and folklore. The shop was filled with locally made crafts, woolen products, and unique Viking-inspired memorabilia. I finally settled on a hand-knitted wool scarf, its intricate design a reminder of the skill and artistry of Icelandic craftspeople. I also picked up a small troll figurine, a nod to the mythical creatures that are so deeply ingrained in Icelandic folklore. I learned from the shop owner that Icelanders, like other indigenous people around the world, still talk about nature spirits such as elves, hidden people, mermaids, dragons and trolls in the present tense. Although most of us have not seen elves or hidden people, most of us know someone who has experienced, felt or seen them.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to a final Icelandic dinner at Bjargarsteinn Mathús in Grundarfjörður. This restaurant is renowned for its innovative cuisine and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. I opted for the seafood tasting menu, eager to sample the freshest catches of the day. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The langoustine soup was a particular highlight, its creamy texture and delicate taste a true delight.

The weather in Snæfellsnes in January hovers around freezing, with strong winds and frequent snow. It certainly added a layer of drama to the landscape. I was glad I packed my warm winter jacket, hiking boots, and other essentials. I did, however, realize that I had forgotten my portable phone charger and binoculars for wildlife spotting. A rookie mistake on my part!

Driving back, I thought of Hans and how much he would have loved this trip. I made a mental note to plan a trip back here, together with him, in the summer months. I can already imagine us hiking together, exploring the lava fields, and marveling at the midnight sun. Perhaps we could even try our hand at brewing our own beer, inspired by the local breweries I've encountered along the way.

This trip has been more than just a vacation; it's been a journey of self-discovery and a reminder of the importance of connecting with nature. As I prepare to leave Snæfellsnes tomorrow and head back to Heidelberg, I carry with me a heart full of memories and a renewed appreciation for the beauty and resilience of our planet. This trip also reminded me of the importance of sustainable travel. I'm committed to making more eco-conscious choices in my future travels, from choosing accommodations to supporting local businesses.

Tomorrow marks the end of my solo adventure, but the impressions will last a lifetime. I am very grateful for the opportunity to have experienced the magic of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

I’m already looking forward to planning my next adventure – perhaps a cycling trip along the Neckar River back home, or a visit to a modern art museum in Copenhagen. But for now, I'll cherish the memories of Iceland and the lessons I've learned along the way.
