Following the Hare's Footsteps

Today was a day of diving deeper into the heart of Tottori, beyond the majestic dunes. I wanted to explore the cultural tapestry woven into this region, and I must say, it was even more enchanting than I had imagined. From ancient shrines whispering tales of love and healing to the vibrant local life, Tottori revealed its soul to me today.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Uradome Coast Island Cruise. It was quite early, but the thought of the day ahead propelled me. The gentle sea breeze and the distant sound of the waves made for a peaceful start. I enjoyed a simple but satisfying meal, fueling up for my explorations.

With renewed energy, I made my way to the Tottori Prefectural Museum. As someone who appreciates art and history, I was eager to immerse myself in the local culture. The museum was a treasure trove of artifacts and exhibits, showcasing the region's rich heritage. I was particularly drawn to the exhibits on local folk history, which gave me a glimpse into the lives of the people who have called this place home for generations. I spent a good few hours wandering through the halls, soaking in the stories and traditions of Tottori.

I found myself captivated by the special exhibition, which showcased Mizuki Shigeru's Yokai Parade. The exhibit unraveled the mysteries of how the Japanese ghouls depicted by the artist came to be, displaying Mizuki's own collection of yokai-related materials. It was fascinating to see the evolution of these mythical creatures and their significance in Japanese folklore. The museum itself was founded in 1972 on the grounds of Tottori Castle Park, contributing to the education and culture of the prefecture. It was amazing to see the permanent exhibitions with over 3,000 materials, including geology, biology, history, folklore and art!

Sometimes, the most profound connections are found in the quietest corners of the world.

Next on my itinerary was the Hakuto Shrine, a place steeped in legend and romance. As I approached, I could feel the weight of history and the palpable sense of devotion that permeated the air. The shrine is dedicated to the White Rabbit of Inaba, a figure from Japanese mythology who is said to have played matchmaker to a kind deity and a beautiful princess. The story is quite captivating, and it was humbling to stand in a place where such a tale originated.

The shrine was adorned with rabbit statues and small stones, called "Musubi Ishi" (connection stones), which visitors place on the statues while making wishes for good fortune in love. It was heartwarming to see so many people seeking blessings for their relationships. I purchased an "omamori" (good-luck charm) to protect me from evil spirits. Walking around the shrine, I reflected on the idea of finding love and connection in unexpected places.

The Hakuto Shrine is also known as the birthplace of traditional Japanese medicine. It is believed that the pond on the shrine grounds is where the White Rabbit washed his wounds, and the shrine is said to offer healing benefits for sickness and marriage. The shrine enshrines a white rabbit god and is associated with the myth of the “White Hare of Inaba” which appears in Japan's Kojiki. The hare helped the young god win the princess's hand over his 80 brothers, and is popular for its romantic emphasis. It was truly a special place.

For lunch, I headed to Sakyu Kaikan near the Sand Museum, where I indulged in a delightful meal of local delicacies. I opted for the Tottori Wagyu beef short rib bowl, which was a culinary masterpiece. The beef was tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth with each bite. It was the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploration. The Sakyu Kaikan is the tourist facility nearest to the Tottori Sand Dunes, offering dishes of locally caught crab and Kaisendon (seafood-topped rice).

After lunch, I decided to explore the Natural Farm Coco Garden, a charming shop that celebrates local produce. As someone passionate about sustainable living, I was excited to see what they had to offer. The farm is known for its all-natural poultry farming methods and free-range chickens, and I was impressed by their commitment to ethical and environmentally friendly practices. I purchased a few souvenirs, including some locally made jams and honey, to take back home to Hans.

I couldn't resist trying their specialty: the fluffy pancakes with a souffle-like texture and rich flavor. They were made with eggs laid by free-range chickens, and they were absolutely divine. The pancakes were served with organic maple syrup, and they were the perfect treat after a long day of exploring. I learned that the farm adheres to environmentally friendly agricultural principles, and their signature product is a unique type of egg laid by free-range chickens. The eggs are the magic ingredient in the Cocogarden Cafe's famous ultra-fluffy and extra decadent pancakes. I made sure to get the classic pancakes with melted butter and organic maple syrup.

As evening approached, I made my way to KaiyoTei for dinner, a seafood restaurant known for its fresh catches and warm hospitality. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to savor the flavors of the sea. I ordered the seafood don, a visually stunning dish that came highly recommended. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were vibrant and complex. It was the perfect way to end a day of cultural immersion and culinary delights.

KaiyoTei is located within the Tottori Port Seafood Market, offering seafood managed in a live tank filled with natural seawater, ensuring exceptional freshness. Their signature dish is the 'Live White Squid Sashimi', along with the winter-only 'Live Matsuba Crab'. The seafood is fresh and delicious with reasonable price, with a visually stunning seafood don. The staff were kind and perfect, making it a great Tottori seafood experience.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had learned and experienced. Tottori is more than just sand dunes; it's a place with a rich history, a vibrant culture, and a warm, welcoming spirit. I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this region and connect with its people. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventure to Amedaki Falls and WarabeKan, I carry with me the whispers of the white rabbit and the memories of a day well spent.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Amedaki Falls and WarabeKan. I also plan to have breakfast at Ray Garden, lunch at Drive in Sakyu, and dinner at Ichiba-Shokudo Karo. In the evening, I might visit BAR Zen for a nightcap.

The Tottori Sand Dunes Festival is coming up on August 7th, so I'm excited to see the events that will be taking place then! I'm enjoying the Pokémon GO Sand Tour Route 2025-2026 campaign, inviting fans and travelers to explore Tottori's scenic landscape.

As I drift off to sleep, I am already anticipating the adventures that await me tomorrow. Tottori continues to surprise and delight me, and I can't wait to see what else this enchanting region has in store.
