Waterfall Wonders and Culinary Delights

Today was all about embracing the raw, untamed beauty of Yakushima and indulging in the island's unique flavors. As a freelance content writer and social media manager from Berlin, I find that immersing myself in nature is the perfect antidote to the digital world. And what better place to do that than in a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its ancient forests and dramatic waterfalls?

The day started with a hearty breakfast at Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. I opted for their specialty, flying fish ramen. The broth was rich and flavorful, and the flying fish added a unique, slightly smoky taste. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring. The restaurant itself had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the locals about the best spots to visit on the island.

First on the agenda was Senpiro Falls. The drive there was scenic, winding through lush greenery and past quaint villages. As I approached the falls, I could hear the roar of the water, a symphony of nature's power. The waterfall is easily accessible from the main road, and there's a small parking area nearby. From there, it's just a short walk to the viewing area. The sheer size of the falls is breathtaking. The water plunges down 60 meters over a massive granite rock, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. I learned that the waterfall gets its name from the granite bedrock on the left side, which is said to look like a thousand people holding hands. I spent a good hour just soaking in the view, taking photos, and feeling the cool mist on my face.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the simplest moments, like standing in awe of a waterfall's raw power.

Next up was Ohko Waterfall, located on the west coast of the island. This waterfall is listed as one of Japan's best 100 waterfalls, and it's easy to see why. At 88 meters high, it's the largest waterfall on Yakushima. The drive to Ohko Waterfall took me past Kurio Village and to the entrance of Seibu-rindo Forest Path. The walk to the waterfall is short and easy, along a barrier-free promenade. As I got closer, the roar of the water grew louder, and I could feel the cool spray on my skin. The waterfall cascades down in two streams to a deep-green plunge pool below. It was so refreshing to stand there and take it all in, especially after the humid hike to get there. I even spotted a few Yakushima monkeys playing in the trees nearby.

For lunch, I stopped at hiyoriya, a small, organic restaurant located about 2 kilometers north of the Yakushima Airport. This place is a hidden gem. It's a small restaurant, and it's easy to miss the signboard. Hiyoriya specializes in organic and mostly vegetarian cuisine. I opted for the set lunch, which included a variety of small dishes featuring local vegetables, tofu, and brown rice. The flavors were delicate and nuanced, and everything was beautifully presented. It was a healthy and delicious meal that left me feeling energized for the rest of the day.

After lunch, I decided to do some souvenir shopping at Yakusugi-ya. This charming shop is filled with unique treasures and local crafts. I picked up a few small items for my family and friends back in Berlin, including some Yakusugi wood carvings and local tea. It was fun to browse through the shop and chat with the owner about the island's history and culture.

As the day wound down, I headed to Kotobuki for dinner. This restaurant is located a few kilometers south of Kusugawa Onsen, and it's a bit of a hidden gem. The setting is beautiful, with a traditional Japanese interior that feels like stepping back in time. I had made a reservation a few days in advance, which is a must if you want to eat there. The menu is set at 2,000 yen per person, and the meal depends on the day's fresh ingredients. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was incredibly relaxing. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Yakushima's natural wonders.

Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into Yakushima's cultural side with visits to the Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center and the Yakusugi Museum. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at Ambar, a local bar, in the evening. It's all about balancing nature with culture, and I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings.

Reflecting on my day, I'm reminded of why I love solo travel so much. It's about having the freedom to explore at my own pace, to discover hidden gems, and to connect with the local culture. Yakushima has exceeded all my expectations, and I can't wait to see what other adventures await me on this magical island. As someone who grew up in the coastal town of Salinas, Puerto Rico, I've always been drawn to the ocean, but there's something truly special about being surrounded by ancient forests and cascading waterfalls. It's a reminder of the power and beauty of nature, and it's an experience that I'll cherish forever.
