Guardians of the Forest

Today was a day of deep immersion into the heart of Yakushima's ancient forests. I set out to explore Yakusugi Land and witness the majestic Kigensugi Cedar, ready to be humbled by the age and grandeur of these natural monuments. It was a day filled with the scent of cedar, the soft touch of moss, and the quiet whispers of centuries of stories held within the trees.

After a hearty breakfast at Each Meal, a Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter, where the chef's dedication to local ingredients truly shone, I felt energized and ready to tackle the trails of Yakusugi Land.

The morning air was crisp and carried the promise of another day of exploration in this UNESCO World Heritage site. I hopped on a bus and made my way towards the park, excited to experience the famed Yakusugi Land. The anticipation was building up as the bus made its way through winding roads, with glimpses of the dense forest all around.

Yakusugi Land is a wonderland of ancient cedar trees, some of which are over a thousand years old. The park offers several well-maintained hiking trails, ranging from easy strolls to more challenging treks. Since I wanted to take my time and soak in the atmosphere, I opted for a moderately challenging course that would allow me to delve deeper into the forest's embrace. The humidity was noticeable, a typical characteristic of Yakushima's climate in July, but the canopy provided a welcome respite from the sun.

As I stepped onto the trail, I was immediately enveloped by a world of green. Towering Yakusugi cedars, their gnarled trunks covered in vibrant green moss, lined the path. The air was thick with the earthy scent of damp wood and the sweet fragrance of cedar. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled patterns on the forest floor. It felt like stepping into another world, a realm where time moved at a different pace.

I chose the 150-minute course, which promised a good balance of immersion and physical activity. The trail was well-maintained, with boardwalks and stairs in some sections, making it accessible while still retaining a sense of wilderness. As I hiked, I marveled at the sheer size and age of the cedars. These trees have stood for centuries, weathering countless storms and witnessing the ebb and flow of time. It was humbling to be in their presence, feeling like a tiny speck in the grand scheme of nature.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

One of the highlights of Yakusugi Land was encountering the Buddhasugi Cedar, a magnificent tree estimated to be around 1,800 years old. Its massive trunk and intricate root system were truly awe-inspiring. I spent some time simply sitting at its base, absorbing the energy of this ancient being. It was a moment of profound connection with nature, a reminder of the enduring power and resilience of life.

Further along the trail, I came across the remains of old logging operations. Stumps and remnants of tameshigiri (tree sampling) dating back to Japan's feudal era were scattered throughout the forest. These remnants served as a poignant reminder of the island's history and the impact of human activity on its natural environment. It was a stark contrast to the serene beauty of the ancient cedars, highlighting the importance of conservation and sustainable practices.

After a satisfying hike through Yakusugi Land, I was ready for lunch. I headed to DINING CAFE BAR SLOW, enticed by the promise of Italian cuisine with a local twist.

The cafe was charming, with a cozy interior and a terrace overlooking the forest. I opted for the carbonara, which came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint! The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the sauce was rich and flavorful. It was the perfect fuel for the afternoon's adventure.

With renewed energy, I set off to visit the Kigensugi Cedar. Located a short drive from Yakusugi Land, the Kigensugi is said to be around 3,000 years old and is one of the largest and most easily accessible Yakusugi cedars on the island.

The drive itself was scenic, winding through lush forests and offering glimpses of the island's rugged coastline.

Kigensugi stands at an elevation of about 1,200 meters, its impressive height of nearly 20 meters dominating the landscape. What struck me most was the sheer number of other plants growing from its trunk – a testament to its age and the rich ecosystem it supports. The atmosphere around the Kigensugi was tranquil and serene. I took a moment to simply gaze at this ancient tree, imagining the centuries of history it had witnessed. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the insignificance of my own existence in the face of such enduring natural beauty.

As the day drew to a close, I decided to stop by Ganta for a drink.

It's a local bar that stays open relatively late, offering a cozy spot to unwind. I enjoyed a local craft beer while chatting with some locals, gaining insights into their lives and the unique culture of Yakushima. It was a perfect way to end a day of exploration and reflection.

For dinner, I chose Matsutake, a soba noodle restaurant known for its authentic Japanese cuisine.

The restaurant was a bit hidden, tucked away behind another house, but the effort to find it was well worth it. I enjoyed a delicious bowl of cold soba with tempura, savoring the delicate flavors and the warm hospitality of the owners. The atmosphere was traditional, with tatami floor seating and an interior garden view. It was a truly immersive cultural experience.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Senpiro Falls and Ohko Waterfall, two of Yakushima's most stunning natural attractions. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at the Yakusugi-ya shop. As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the magic of Yakushima. The ancient cedars, the lush forests, and the warm hospitality of the locals have left an indelible mark on my soul. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, and to connect with the world around me.

Yakushima is truly a special place, a sanctuary of natural beauty and ancient wisdom. I encourage anyone seeking a transformative travel experience to visit this enchanting island. You won't be disappointed.
