Coastal Discoveries in Yakushima

Today was all about embracing the coastal beauty of Yakushima. After days spent hiking through ancient forests, I was excited to explore the island's shores, learn about its marine life, and soak in the tranquility of its beaches. It was a day filled with gentle discoveries and a deeper appreciation for Yakushima's diverse ecosystems.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Panorama. The chic atmosphere and bilingual menu made it easy to navigate, and I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set. The food was delicious, and the local draft beer was a great way to start the day. I made a mental note to return for dinner sometime during my stay. The staff were incredibly friendly, even offering recommendations for my day's adventures.

First stop: the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall. As someone passionate about sustainable living, I was eager to learn about the conservation efforts for these incredible creatures. The hall is a charming museum dedicated to the preservation and education of sea turtles. The exhibits were thoughtfully curated, highlighting the biology, behavior, and habitats of these magnificent animals. I was particularly moved by the information on the environmental challenges they face. The knowledgeable manager provided clear and engaging explanations, and I even got to see adorable baby turtles that had hatched on a local beach. Seeing those tiny turtles, knowing they would soon be released into the ocean, filled me with a sense of hope and responsibility. It was inspiring to witness the dedication of the staff towards protecting these beautiful animals. As I left, I grabbed a few postcards as a memento of this touching experience.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the quiet moments of learning and reflection, connecting us to the natural world and our role in protecting it.

Next, I headed to Inakahama Beach, known as one of Japan's top sea turtle nesting sites. The bus ride from Miyanoura was scenic, winding through lush landscapes before arriving at the coast. The beach itself was stunning – a long stretch of golden sand and clear blue water. Though it was daytime and the turtles typically nest at night, I could still see their tracks in the sand, a reminder of the precious life that frequents these shores. I spent a couple of hours simply walking along the beach, enjoying the serenity and the sound of the waves. The weather was perfect, with a gentle breeze and plenty of sunshine. I even took a refreshing dip in the ocean, the water crystal clear and inviting. I made sure to be respectful of the environment, taking all my trash with me and avoiding any disturbance to the natural habitat.

After my beachside relaxation, I decided to explore the local shops. Gallery KIANU caught my eye with its display of local crafts and artwork. I browsed through the unique pieces, admiring the skill and creativity of the local artisans. I ended up buying a small, hand-painted ceramic turtle as a souvenir, a perfect reminder of my day's adventures. Supporting local businesses is important to me, and it felt good to contribute to the island's economy.

For lunch, I ventured to Kamogawa Restaurant in Anbo. Having read rave reviews about their flying fish dishes, I knew I had to try it. The restaurant was bustling with both locals and tourists, a testament to its popularity. I ordered the deep-fried flying fish set, and it did not disappoint! The fish was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, a truly unique culinary experience. The set also came with miso soup, rice, and several side dishes, a hearty and satisfying meal. The staff were friendly and accommodating, making me feel right at home. I even tried Kamenote for the first time. It tasted slightly like shrimp and was surprisingly good.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Onoaida for dinner at 味徳 Ajitoku. This restaurant is known for its regional and seasonal cooking, and I was excited to try more local delicacies. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I decided on the fried chicken set meal, and it was absolutely delicious! The chicken was perfectly crispy and flavorful, and the portion was generous. The miso soup and side dishes were also excellent, providing a taste of authentic Yakushima cuisine. It was the perfect way to end a day of coastal exploration.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience Yakushima's coastal charms. From the educational visit to the Sea Turtle Hall to the tranquil moments on Inakahama Beach and the delicious local cuisine, it was a day filled with simple pleasures and meaningful connections. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventure at the Botanic gardens and Yakushima Fruit Garden - “Papaya no Sato”, I'm excited to see what other natural wonders this island has in store. I might even treat myself to a drink at Fisherman's Bar NINA in the evening, a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

Back at the guesthouse, I took some time to organize my photos and jot down notes from the day. As I looked through the images of the baby turtles, the sandy beach, and the delicious food, I realized how much I had already fallen in love with Yakushima. It's a place that nourishes the soul and inspires a deeper connection with nature. I'm eager to continue exploring this magical island, discovering its hidden gems, and sharing my experiences with all of you.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to visit the Botanic gardens and the Yakushima Fruit Garden - “Papaya no Sato”. I'm looking forward to immersing myself in the island's flora and fauna, and perhaps trying some exotic fruits. And who knows, maybe I'll even end the day with a visit to Fisherman's Bar NINA for a taste of Yakushima nightlife.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made sure to double-check my essentials for tomorrow: hiking boots, camera, rain jacket, portable charger, and Japanese phrasebook. Although I had forgotten insect repellent and a travel pillow, I've learned to adapt and make the most of every situation. After all, it's the unexpected moments that often make for the best travel memories.
