Con Dao's Untouched Beauty
Today was a day of pure bliss, a seamless blend of natural wonders, historical insights, and gastronomic adventures. It's days like these that remind me why I traded my Berlin apartment for a life of exploration. This solo journey to the Con Dao Islands continues to exceed all expectations, offering a sense of tranquility and discovery that's both grounding and exhilarating.
My morning started with a hearty breakfast at The Den. Opting for a Vietnamese coffee and a tofu and egg bowl, I fueled up for the day's adventures. The coffee was strong and flavorful, a perfect pick-me-up, and the tofu and egg bowl was a delightful mix of textures and tastes. The Den had a cozy atmosphere, making it a great place to start the day. It reminded me a bit of some of the quirky cafes back in Berlin, but with a distinct island vibe. After breakfast, I set off to explore Hòn Bảy Cạnh.
Experience the tranquil beauty of Hòn Bảy Cạnh in Con Dao, a serene island paradise perfect for relaxation and adventure amidst stunning natural landscapes.
The boat ride to Hòn Bảy Cạnh was an experience in itself. The sea was calm, and the views of the surrounding islands were simply breathtaking. As we approached Hòn Bảy Cạnh, I was immediately struck by its unspoiled beauty. The island is a haven for wildlife, and I was excited to explore its lush mangrove forests and vibrant coral reefs.
I spent the morning hiking through the mangrove forests, learning about the island's unique ecosystem. The air was fresh and clean, filled with the sounds of birds and insects. It was fascinating to see the diverse plant life and the various species of crabs scuttling along the forest floor. I even spotted a few cua xe tăng, or 'tank crabs,' as they are known locally, moving through the mangroves.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest corners of the world.
One of the highlights of Hòn Bảy Cạnh is its sea turtle conservation program. The island is a nesting site for several species of sea turtles, and I had the opportunity to learn about the efforts to protect these amazing creatures. Although it wasn't the season for turtle nesting, the information I learned about their life cycle and the conservation efforts was incredibly interesting. It’s inspiring to see the dedication of the park rangers and volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure the survival of these gentle giants.
After my hike, I couldn't resist the allure of the crystal-clear waters. I spent the afternoon snorkeling, marveling at the colorful coral reefs and the abundance of marine life. The underwater world was a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes, with schools of fish darting in and out of the coral. I even spotted a few sea turtles gracefully gliding through the water. It was an unforgettable experience, one that I will cherish for years to come.
Leaving Hòn Bảy Cạnh, I felt a sense of peace and connection with nature. It's a reminder that sometimes the most profound experiences are found in the quietest corners of the world. Back on the main island, I decided to spend the late afternoon at Dat Tham Beach.
Experience the tranquility and natural beauty of Dat Tham Beach, a hidden gem in Vietnam's coastal paradise, perfect for relaxation and exploration.
Dat Tham Beach is a bit off the beaten path, requiring a bit of a hike to reach it. But the effort was well worth it. The beach is a secluded paradise, with soft white sand and turquoise waters. It's the perfect place to unwind and soak up the sun. I spent a few hours swimming and relaxing on the beach, enjoying the peace and quiet. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration.
As the sun began to set, I made my way to Nhà hàng Poulo Condore for lunch. This restaurant, part of the Saigon Con Dao Resort, offers a delightful dining experience with stunning views of the sea. I savored a delicious seafood meal, enjoying the fresh flavors and the relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant specializes in traditional Vietnamese dishes and seafood, offering a wide variety of options. I opted for grilled fish with lemongrass and chili, a local specialty that was bursting with flavor. It was the perfect way to refuel after a day of adventure. The Poulo Condore restaurant has a seating capacity of over 300, and specializes in wedding receptions, meetings and group meetings.

For dinner, I ventured to Cây Bàng Đỏ. This restaurant is known for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine and its charming ambiance. The name itself, Cây Bàng Đỏ, translates to Red Terminalia Tree, a nod to the iconic bàng trees that are so prevalent in Con Dao. These trees, with their sturdy trunks and vibrant red leaves, are a symbol of resilience and strength. They have witnessed the island's tumultuous history and stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of its people. The bàng tree is more than just a tree; it's a living monument to the island's past. I enjoyed a traditional Vietnamese meal, savoring the complex flavors and the fresh ingredients. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and I felt like I was dining in someone's home.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out ULA Restaurant & Bar Con Dao. This beachside bar offers a cool and relaxing atmosphere, with delicious cocktails and a great vibe. I enjoyed a refreshing drink while listening to music and watching the waves. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The ULA Bar has a beach bar style design that creates a relaxing atmosphere.

As I sit here, writing in my journal, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences I've had today. Con Dao is a truly special place, a hidden gem that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and cultural richness. I’m already looking forward to tomorrow, where I plan to visit Mũi Cá Mập (Shark Cape) and Chim Chim cape, followed by some shopping at Hin Beautytips. It's hard to believe that this adventure is already passing by so quickly, but I intend to savor every moment.
Until tomorrow,
Kevin
