First Impressions of Pelion: A Journey Back in Time

After months of planning, Hans and I finally arrived in the enchanting region of Mount Pelion. Leaving behind the familiar streets of Berlin, we were eager to immerse ourselves in the heart of Greece, a place where history whispers through ancient stones and nature unfolds in breathtaking vistas. Today was all about embracing the journey, and what better way to do that than aboard a historic train and wandering through a picturesque village square?

Our day began with an early start, fueled by anticipation and a hearty Greek breakfast at KRITSA Restaurant in Portaria. The restaurant was easy to find in the central square. It was a beautiful morning, so we sat outside under the shade of the plane trees. The aroma of freshly baked bread and local honey filled the air as we enjoyed a traditional spread of pastries, cheeses and strong Greek coffee. It was the perfect way to prepare for our Pelion adventure.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off towards Ano Lehonia, the starting point of our journey on the Train of Pilio. Known locally as Moutzouris (the smudgy one), this narrow-gauge railway promised a nostalgic trip through the mountains. As we boarded the train, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement, knowing that this railway, conceived by Evaristo de Chirico, had once been a vital artery for the region.

The train chugged along, and the scenery transformed into a tapestry of lush forests, olive groves, and the stunning views of the Pagasetic Gulf. The air was crisp and carried the scent of pine, a welcome change from the urban air of Berlin. Hans, ever the engineer at heart, was fascinated by the mechanics of the train, while I was captivated by the picturesque views unfolding outside the window.

Sometimes, the most scenic routes are those traveled at a slower pace.

After a brief stop at Ano Gatzea, where we stretched our legs and enjoyed some refreshments , the train continued its ascent towards Milies. The journey was more than just a ride; it was an immersion into the soul of Pelion, a chance to witness the raw beauty and rich history of this enchanting region.

Arriving in Milies, we disembarked and took a leisurely stroll through the village. The cobbled paths led us to the central square, where we explored the local church and soaked in the tranquil atmosphere. It was a scene straight out of a postcard, and I couldn't resist capturing every moment with my camera.

Next on our itinerary was Makrinitsa, known as the Balcony of Pelion. As we drove up the winding roads, the panoramic views of Volos and the Pagasetic Gulf unfolded before us. The village itself was a maze of stone houses, narrow alleys, and hidden courtyards, each corner revealing a new delight.

We parked near the Small Square and walked to the Central Square. The heart of Makrinitsa, Plateia Eirinis (Peace Square), offered breathtaking views. The square was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all drawn to the beauty and charm of this mountain village. The ancient plane tree in the square provided a cool, shaded spot to pause and take in the scenery. I admired the traditional architecture, the stone houses adorned with flower pots, and the marble fountain spouting crystal-clear water.

We took our time exploring the village, peeking into artisan shops and admiring the local crafts. Filokaliashandmadecreations caught my eye with its array of unique, handcrafted souvenirs. I picked up a small, hand-painted ceramic bird to remind me of our Pelion adventure.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Polydroso restaurant in Pouri. Though it required a bit of a drive, the restaurant was worth the effort. Perched high in the mountains, it offered stunning views of Skiathos and Skopelos. The food was exceptional, with many ingredients sourced directly from the couple's own garden. We savored local delicacies like lamb souvlaki and spetzofai, each bite bursting with authentic Greek flavors.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Mountain Top Cafe - Pelion, a spot recommended by a local we met in Makrinitsa. The cafe offered stunning views and a cozy atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a relaxing drink. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the landscape, we reflected on our first day in Pelion. With a glass of local wine in hand, Hans and I savored the moment, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore this hidden gem of Greece.

Dinner was at the same Mountain Top Cafe. The night view was just as stunning as the day. I enjoyed a traditional Greek salad and moussaka, while Hans opted for grilled meat. The portions were generous, and the flavors were rich and satisfying.

As we drove back to our accommodation, we chatted about tomorrow's itinerary. We're planning to hike the Centaurs' path and explore Vizitsa panoramic square. I am particularly excited about the Centaurs' Path, a trail steeped in mythology and natural beauty. I've packed my hiking boots and camera, ready to capture the essence of Pelion's mythical landscapes. We’re also hoping to visit Botanothḗkē, and Paralos Bar.

Back in our cozy room, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. Pelion had already exceeded my expectations, and I knew that the days ahead would be filled with even more unforgettable experiences. As I drifted off to sleep, I dreamt of ancient trains, picturesque squares, and the warm hospitality of the Greek people. This journey, I knew, would be one for the books.

Tomorrow, we will delve deeper into the heart of Pelion, exploring ancient trails and hidden villages. I can't wait to share those experiences with you all. Until then, as they say in Greece, *kalo vradi* – good night!
