Day 2: Whispers of Centaurs and Panoramic Views: A Day in Vizitsa, Pelion
Immerse yourself in the mythical Centaurs' Path and breathtaking vistas of Vizitsa, discovering the heart of Pelion's charm and flavors.
In the Footsteps of Myth and Beauty
Today, Hans and I ventured deeper into the heart of Mount Pelion, seeking to uncover more of its hidden gems. Our explorations led us through ancient paths and charming villages, each with its own unique story to tell. It was a day filled with the magic of Greek mythology, the allure of panoramic views, and the warmth of local hospitality.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at To Katofli tis Ketis. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Greek coffee filled the air as we settled into a cozy corner. I couldn't resist trying their famous cheese pies drizzled with honey; the blend of savory and sweet was simply divine. Hans opted for a traditional omelet, packed with local herbs and vegetables. Fuelled up for the day, we set off to explore the legendary Centaurs' Path.

The Centaurs' Path, a trail steeped in Greek mythology, promised a walk through the realm of the legendary creatures, half-human and half-horse, said to have roamed these very hills. As an urban gardener, I was particularly drawn to the rich flora and fauna surrounding the path. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. Sunlight filtered through the canopy, casting dappled shadows on the moss-covered stones. We meandered along the well-marked trail, denoted by red circles painted on the rocks. The path was easy to navigate, making it a pleasant stroll rather than a strenuous hike.
The path wound alongside a gently flowing stream, the sound of the water creating a soothing melody. Wooden bridges spanned the stream at various points, adding a touch of rustic charm to the landscape. I imagined the centaurs galloping through these woods, their hooves echoing through the valleys. Hans, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in identifying the various plant species along the way. We even spotted some late-blooming wildflowers, their vibrant colors a stark contrast to the verdant foliage.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
After our mythical walk, we drove to the village of Vizitsa, known for its well-preserved traditional architecture and stunning panoramic views. As we approached the village, the landscape opened up, revealing vistas of the Pagasitic Gulf shimmering in the distance. Vizitsa itself is a charming settlement, with cobblestone streets and stone houses adorned with colorful flowers. We parked the car at the edge of the village, as cars aren't allowed in the village center, and continued on foot.

The heart of Vizitsa is its panoramic square, a gathering place for locals and tourists alike. The square is shaded by an ancient plane tree, its branches providing a welcome respite from the afternoon sun. We paused to admire the view, taking in the breathtaking vista of the surrounding hillsides and the azure waters of the gulf. The air was filled with the gentle hum of conversation and the clinking of coffee cups.
We explored the village on foot, wandering through its narrow streets and admiring the traditional mansions. Many of these mansions have been converted into guesthouses, offering visitors a chance to experience the charm of Vizitsa firsthand. I was particularly drawn to the intricate details of the architecture, the ornate balconies, and the colorful shutters.
For lunch, we stopped at Synantisi, a restaurant known for its authentic Greek cuisine. We shared a selection of local specialties, including moussaka, grilled octopus, and a refreshing Greek salad. The flavors were vibrant and fresh, a testament to the quality of the locally sourced ingredients. Hans particularly enjoyed the moussaka, declaring it the best he'd ever tasted. I savored the grilled octopus, its tender texture and smoky flavor a true delight.
After lunch, we browsed the local shops, seeking out unique souvenirs to remind us of our time in Pelion. I was delighted to discover Botanothḗkē, a shop specializing in local herbs and natural products. As an urban gardener, I'm always on the lookout for new and interesting plants to add to my collection. I purchased a selection of local herbs, including oregano, thyme, and sage, their aromatic scents filling my bag. Hans, meanwhile, found a beautifully crafted wooden bowl, perfect for serving salads.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to a pre-dinner drink at Paralos Bar. We sat at a table overlooking the sea, sipping local wine and watching the sun dip below the horizon. The sky was ablaze with color, painting a breathtaking panorama of oranges, pinks, and purples. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

For dinner, we chose 1701 Wine Restaurant, drawn in by its reputation for culinary excellence and its impressive wine selection. The restaurant is nestled in a charming setting, with views of the surrounding landscape. We indulged in a multi-course meal, each dish expertly paired with a local wine. The flavors were exquisite, a true celebration of Greek cuisine. Hans and I shared grilled lamb chops and sea bass, which were cooked to perfection. The service was impeccable, the staff attentive and knowledgeable.

As we strolled back to our accommodation, the stars twinkled above us, casting a magical glow on the village. The air was cool and still, carrying the scent of wood smoke and pine. We reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Mount Pelion. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the waterfalls of Kissos and visit the Pelion Cross of Jesus Observation Point, eager to uncover more of this region's hidden treasures.
