Embracing the Wild Beauty of Sintra's Coastline
Today was a day of embracing the raw, untamed beauty of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. I set out to explore some of its most dramatic landscapes and hidden culinary gems. It was a day filled with breathtaking views, invigorating hikes, and delicious food, a perfect blend of nature and culture that makes this region so special. As a freelance urban gardener from Berlin, I always find solace and inspiration in natural settings, and today was no exception.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Mela Canela in Sintra. This charming, plant-based cafe is a true gem, offering a variety of delicious and healthy options. I opted for the toast with tofu, spinach and sun-dried tomatoes, which was absolutely delicious and provided the perfect fuel for the day's adventures. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making me feel right at home. It's wonderful to find a place that aligns with my values of sustainable living and healthy eating.

With a full stomach and a spring in my step, I headed towards Pico do Monge. The drive itself was an experience, winding through lush forests and offering glimpses of the stunning coastline. As I ascended, the views became increasingly panoramic, showcasing the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean and the rolling hills of the natural park. It was a bit cloudy, but the views were still amazing. I could see the clouds rolling in from the ocean, creating a mystical atmosphere.

Reaching Pico do Monge, I was greeted by a landscape that felt both serene and powerful. The wind was strong, carrying the scent of the sea and the earth. I spent some time simply taking in the view, feeling a sense of awe and gratitude for being able to experience such natural beauty. I'm not sure I've ever felt so connected to nature. As someone who spends her days transforming urban spaces into green havens, it's a reminder of the importance of preserving these wild places.
The beauty of nature is not just in what you see, but in what it makes you feel.
Next on my itinerary was Praia da Ursa, a beach known for its dramatic cliffs and secluded location. Getting there required a bit of a hike, which added to the adventure. The trail was steep and rocky, but the anticipation of reaching the beach kept me going. I made sure to wear sturdy shoes, as recommended, and I'm glad I did. I can see why it's important to be careful on the trail, especially in wet weather.

As I descended, the view of Praia da Ursa unfolded before me, and it was truly breathtaking. The beach is nestled between towering cliffs, with unique rock formations that give it a distinctive character. The most famous of these is the Rocha da Ursa, a rock that resembles a bear with its cub. The beach itself was small and secluded, with crystal-clear waters and soft sand.
I spent a few hours exploring the beach, taking photos, and simply enjoying the tranquility. The waves were crashing against the rocks, creating a soothing soundtrack. I even braved the cold water for a quick dip, which was incredibly refreshing. It was the perfect opportunity to disconnect from the world and reconnect with myself.
With the sun beginning to dip towards the horizon, it was time to head back. The hike back up from Praia da Ursa was challenging, but the sense of accomplishment made it worthwhile. I took my time, stopping to catch my breath and admire the view. As I reached the top, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction and gratitude.
Before heading back to my apartment, I made a stop at Decathlon Sintra. Remembering that I had forgotten to pack an umbrella, I decided to pick one up, as the weather forecast for the next few days was uncertain. I also grabbed an extra memory card for my camera, as I had been taking so many photos and didn't want to run out of space. The store was well-stocked and the staff were helpful, making it a quick and easy stop.

For lunch, I decided to try Taberna Criativa in Colares. This charming wine bar and bistro offers a taste of authentic Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I opted for the garlic and pepper steak, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The restaurant also had a great selection of local wines, and I enjoyed a glass of crisp white wine with my meal. It was a perfect spot to relax and refuel after a day of hiking.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Restaurante Sabores Do Mercado in Sintra for dinner. This restaurant is known for its elevated Portuguese gastronomy, showcasing local produce with a modern twist. The owner, Alex, and his staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, making the entire meal even more enjoyable. I started with the gaspacho, followed by the pork cheeks. For dessert, I couldn't resist trying the Serra da Estrela Cheese Pudim, a signature dessert that's been passed down through generations. The meal was an absolute delight, and I left feeling satisfied and content.

Reflecting on the day, I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to explore the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. The combination of stunning landscapes, challenging hikes, and delicious food has been a true feast for the senses. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures at Parque Nacional da Pena and Gruta do Labirinto, I'm filled with excitement and anticipation. I'm particularly looking forward to exploring the lush forests and unique rock formations of the park. And perhaps I'll treat myself to a glass of Portuguese wine at Castiço Wine Bar in the evening.
This solo trip has been a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with nature and myself. As someone who lives in a bustling city, it's easy to get caught up in the daily grind. But being surrounded by such natural beauty reminds me of what's truly important. It's a reminder to slow down, appreciate the simple things, and embrace the beauty that surrounds us.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Parque Nacional da Pena and Gruta do Labirinto, and I am excited to see what those locations have in store for me!
