Sintra's Hidden Gems: A Day of Vineyards and History

Today was a day of delightful contrasts, blending the serene beauty of Sintra's vineyards with the rich history etched into its ancient stones. It was a day to savor the local flavors, breathe in the fresh coastal air, and simply get lost in the magic of this enchanting region.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Garagem Café. I opted for the vegan yogurt with granola, a delightful and healthy way to start the day. The cafe, perched perfectly to offer a panoramic view of Sintra, was the ideal spot to plan my itinerary. The view was stunning and it was a great way to start the day.

First on the agenda was the Vineyards Trail, a leisurely exploration through the unique wine region of Colares. The trail wound its way through the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, offering glimpses of the Atlantic coast. The vineyards here are unlike any I’ve seen before; the vines are planted in sandy soil, a characteristic of the unique Colares wine. As I walked, I imagined the generations of families who have cultivated these lands, their lives intertwined with the rhythm of the seasons. It was so peaceful and it allowed me to connect with nature. I felt a sense of calm that’s often hard to find amidst the hustle and bustle of city life in Berlin. I made a mental note to buy a bottle of Colares wine to take back home to Hans. He would appreciate the unique taste and the story behind it.

Next, I ventured into the historical heart of Sintra to visit the Pelourinho de Sintra. This pillory, a replica of the original 16th-century structure, stands as a symbol of the town's rich cultural heritage. The original was erected in 1514 but was later dismantled in the 19th century. The current replica was commissioned in 1940. Standing in the Largo da Vila Velha, I tried to imagine what life was like centuries ago when this monument was the center of justice and authority. The intricate carvings and Manueline style of the Pelourinho were truly captivating. It made me think about the history of Svendborg, my hometown, and how different it is from Sintra, yet equally charming in its own way. I spent some time sketching the Pelourinho in my travel journal, trying to capture its essence on paper.

For lunch, I treated myself to a meal at Incomum, a restaurant known for its modern take on Portuguese cuisine. I opted for the three-course set lunch, which was an absolute steal. The creamy risotto with octopus and crunchy samphire was a culinary delight, showcasing the freshest seasonal ingredients. The restaurant's contemporary decor and relaxed atmosphere made it a perfect spot to unwind after a morning of exploring. I savored each bite, appreciating the chef's creativity and the quality of the ingredients. I thought about how Hans would enjoy this place; he always appreciates good food and innovative cuisine. Perhaps I’ll try to recreate the risotto when I get back to Berlin.

In the late afternoon, I decided to embrace the coastal vibe and headed to Bar do Guincho for a drink. Located near Guincho Beach, this bar offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Sintra mountains. The rustic, wooden structure of the bar blended seamlessly with the natural surroundings, creating a welcoming and relaxed environment. I sipped on a refreshing glass of vinho verde, enjoying the invigorating scent of the ocean breeze. The bar is known as one of the best locations in the world for windsurfing. It was founded in 1987 and offers a range of services, including surf classes and equipment rental. As I sat there, watching the waves crash against the shore, I felt a sense of freedom and tranquility. It reminded me of summers spent by the sea in Denmark, a time of endless possibilities and carefree days.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Pic Nic I for dinner. This restaurant offered a cozy and intimate setting, perfect for a solo traveler like myself. I decided to try the chicken tikka, and it was delicious. The flavors were rich and authentic, a testament to the restaurant's commitment to quality. As I enjoyed my meal, I reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore such a beautiful and historically rich region.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Pico do Monge and Praia da Ursa, two more gems within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. I am especially excited to see Praia da Ursa, known for its stunning beauty. I also plan to stop by Decathlon Sintra to pick up a few essentials I forgot to pack. I am already looking forward to another day of exploration and discovery in this magical corner of Portugal.

Today was a reminder of why I love to travel solo. It allows me to be spontaneous, to follow my instincts, and to truly immerse myself in the local culture. It's a chance to disconnect from the everyday and reconnect with myself, to find inspiration in the beauty of the world around me. And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I know that tomorrow will bring even more adventures and unforgettable moments.
