Fairytales and Exotic Gardens

Today was a day of stepping into pure fantasy. From the whimsical heights of Pena Palace to the serene, exotic gardens of Monserrate, Sintra unveiled its most enchanting face. It’s amazing how a place can feel both grand and intimate, a perfect escape for a solo traveler like myself. I felt like I was walking through the pages of a storybook, each corner revealing a new, breathtaking scene.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Becco de Sintra. Fuelled up with a strong coffee and some local pastries, I set off towards the Pena Palace.

The journey itself was part of the adventure, with winding roads climbing higher and higher, offering glimpses of the lush landscape that defines Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth – a refreshing change from Berlin’s urban air.

Arriving at the National Palace of Pena, I was immediately struck by its vibrant colors and architectural mishmash. It’s like a castle plucked straight from a fairytale, with its crenellated towers, Moorish influences, and Manueline details. The palace's history is as rich as its design, originating in the 12th century as a chapel and later becoming a monastery. King Ferdinand II transformed the ruins into the Romanticist masterpiece we see today in the 19th century.

Wandering through the palace, I was captivated by the opulent interiors. The sitting room, with its illusion of broader space, and the Great Hall, once a billiards room, offered glimpses into the lives of Portuguese royalty. I imagined Queen Maria II and King Carlos I strolling through these very halls. The views from the terrace were simply stunning, stretching out to the ocean on one side and Lisbon on the other.

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”

The surrounding Park of Pena is just as enchanting as the palace itself. Ferdinand II, with his passion for botany, planted species from all over the world, creating an arboretum that is now the most important in Portugal. I spent hours exploring its winding paths, discovering hidden grottoes and tranquil lakes. It was easy to get lost in the beauty and serenity of it all.

After immersing myself in the fairytale world of Pena Palace, I decided to explore the Park and Palace of Monserrate.

The contrast between the two palaces was striking. While Pena Palace is bold and vibrant, Monserrate exudes a more subtle, exotic charm. Its history also has intriguing layers. Legend says a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built here after the reconquest of Sintra. Later, a neo-Gothic mansion was built by Gerard de Visme, and William Beckford further enhanced the property in 1793.

The current palace was constructed in 1863 and is a stunning example of Eclecticism, blending Gothic, Indian, and Moorish influences. As I walked through its halls, I was transported to another world. The intricate plasterwork, the delicate arches, and the play of light and shadow created a mesmerizing effect. It felt like stepping into a scene from “A Thousand and One Nights”.

But it was the gardens of Monserrate that truly stole my heart. They are a testament to the power of nature and the vision of those who shaped them. Winding paths led me through a diverse landscape of exotic plants, cascading waterfalls, and serene ponds. I discovered hidden corners filled with ferns, towering trees, and vibrant flowers. The air was filled with the sounds of birdsong and the gentle rustling of leaves.

I paused by a tranquil pond, watching the sunlight dance on the water. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder of why I love solo travel. Being alone allows me to fully immerse myself in the experience, to connect with the place on a deeper level. I made sure to take some photos, although they could never truly capture the magic of the moment.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way back to Sintra Centre, eager to sample some local cuisine. For lunch, I chose Romaria de Baco, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese dishes.

The medieval atmosphere and cabin vibes added to the experience. I indulged in garlic shrimps and mushrooms, savoring the flavors of Portugal. The slow-cooked pork with mashed potatoes was a highlight – so delicious that I might return just for that.

For dinner, I decided on Metamorphosis, drawn by its excellent reviews.

The restaurant has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. I enjoyed the breaded seitan with veggies, a delightful vegan option. The friendly service and tasty food made it a perfect end to a perfect day.

Before heading back to my apartment, I took a stroll through Sintra Centre, browsing the shops for souvenirs.

The winding streets were full of quirky boutiques selling artisan items, hand-painted ceramics, and traditional lace. I resisted the urge to buy too much, reminding myself that I still have many days of travel ahead.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Vineyards Trail and visit the Pelourinho de Sintra. I might also check out Bar do Guincho for a relaxing evening drink. But for now, I’m content to reflect on the day’s adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.

As I sit here writing, I realize that Sintra is more than just a collection of palaces and gardens. It’s a place that stirs the imagination, that awakens the senses, and that reminds us of the beauty that exists in the world. And as a solo traveler, I feel incredibly fortunate to have experienced it all on my own terms.

It’s funny; I almost forgot the umbrella again today, but thankfully, the weather was kind. However, I really need to remember to buy some extra memory cards for my camera. You can never have too much storage when you’re surrounded by such beauty!
