Ducks, Ducks, and More Ducks!

Today was a day for embracing the unexpected and diving headfirst into the quirky side of Phong Nha. It's amazing how travel can surprise you; sometimes the most memorable moments are the ones you never planned. Today was a testament to that, filled with laughter, local flavors, and a deeper connection to the Vietnamese countryside.

My day started with a hearty breakfast at PHONG NHA FAMILY RESTAURANT (NHÀ HÀNG GIA ĐÌNH VIỆT NAM). I opted for a traditional Vietnamese breakfast, eager to fuel up for the day’s adventures. The friendly atmosphere and delicious food were a great way to kick things off. I overheard a couple chatting with the owner, Vietj, about their homestay experience there, which sounded incredibly welcoming. It reminded me a bit of the cozy guesthouses Hans and I often seek out in the Danish countryside. Maybe next time I’ll consider staying there to fully immerse myself in the local vibe.

First up on the itinerary was The Duck Stop, a place I’d heard whispers about from other travelers. Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the promise of something unique and playful was too tempting to resist. As I cycled the 10km from Phong Nha town, the scenery alone was worth the trip. The views of Quang Binh province are truly breathtaking.

Arriving at The Duck Stop, I was immediately greeted by a flurry of activity – and a lot of ducks ! Tran Van Quynh, the young and inventive farmer who started it all, has created a truly special place. What began as a simple farm has transformed into an interactive experience that’s both hilarious and insightful. I decided to jump right in with the Duck Leader game, where you get a box of duck food and become the leader of a duck parade. It was absolutely ridiculous, running around with over 120 ducks chasing after me ! The sound of their quacking and the feeling of them nipping at my heels was an experience I won’t soon forget.

The Duck Stop is more than just a farm; it's a celebration of rural Vietnamese life, filled with laughter, quirky interactions, and a genuine sense of community.

Next up was the famous duck massage. I must admit, I was a bit skeptical, but I decided to give it a try. Trained ducks waddle across your legs, providing a ticklish yet strangely relaxing sensation. It’s definitely one of those things you have to experience to believe. I can see why it's gone viral on TikTok and Instagram.

Of course, no visit to The Duck Stop is complete without trying their Vietnamese pancakes, or bánh xèo. I opted for the pork version, and it was absolutely delicious. Crispy, savory, and full of flavor, it was the perfect way to refuel after all that duck-related excitement.

Leaving The Duck Stop, I made a quick detour to the Phong Nha Monkey Bridge, just a few kilometers away. This charming wooden bridge offers a rustic, scenic crossing over the river. It was the perfect spot for a few photos and a chance to soak in the local rural atmosphere.

My next stop was the Núi Đôi Semiwild Enclosure, a short drive from The Duck Stop. This was a completely different experience, offering a glimpse into the natural beauty and diverse wildlife of Phong Nha. I followed the loop trail along the enclosure fence, enjoying the quiet and rugged scenery. It was a peaceful contrast to the lively atmosphere of The Duck Stop, a chance to connect with nature and appreciate the tranquility of the park.

After a day of exploring, I was ready for a good meal. For lunch, I stopped at Lotus Restaurant - Phong Nha. The food was delicious and beautifully presented, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The welcoming atmosphere made it a perfect spot to relax and recharge.

As the day wound down, I stopped by Xóm Nướng Phong Nha for a drink. It was the perfect place to relax and reflect on the day’s adventures. Sipping on a local beer, I watched the sunset and enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere.

Tomorrow, I’m planning to explore more of Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park. I’ve heard so much about its breathtaking landscapes and remarkable caves, and I can't wait to see it for myself. I'm particularly excited about the prospect of seeing Phong Nha Cave. Perhaps I'll take a dragon boat tour along the Son River. I'll make sure to grab breakfast at Lantern Vietnamese Restaurant before heading out. It’s supposed to be a cozy spot with authentic Vietnamese cuisine.

Today was a reminder that travel is about more than just seeing the sights; it’s about embracing the unexpected, connecting with local culture, and finding joy in the simplest of experiences. And sometimes, it’s about letting a bunch of ducks chase you around a farm !

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took a moment to jot down a few notes in my travel journal. Even though I had forgotten my rain poncho and portable fan at home, the beautiful weather made up for it. I also made sure to charge my camera, ready to capture more of Phong Nha's beauty tomorrow.

I'm looking forward to another day of exploration and discovery, eager to uncover more of Phong Nha's hidden gems. Until then, goodnight from Vietnam!
