A Breath of Fresh Air

Today was all about immersing myself in the serene beauty of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Trading the depths of caves for the embrace of open skies and verdant landscapes, I spent the day exploring the Phong Nha Botanic Garden. It was a day of simple pleasures, of connecting with nature, and savoring the local flavors that make this region so special. A perfect day to recharge my soul and prepare for more adventures to come.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at PHONG NHA FAMILY RESTAURANT (NHÀ HÀNG GIA ĐÌNH VIỆT NAM). I decided on a traditional Vietnamese breakfast of *pho*, eager to fuel up for a day of exploring. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all drawn in by the promise of authentic flavors. I savored every bite, the rich broth warming me from the inside out. It's fascinating how a simple bowl of noodles can tell you so much about a place, its history, and its people. I made a mental note to try and recreate this dish back in Berlin, though I suspect the taste of Vietnam will be hard to replicate in my kitchen.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I headed towards the Phong Nha Botanic Garden. The garden is located a short distance from Phong Nha town, and the ride itself was a treat. The road wound through picturesque countryside, with glimpses of towering limestone karsts and lush rice paddies. The air was fresh and clean, a welcome change from the city bustle I'm used to. November in Phong Nha brings a mix of sunshine and occasional showers. The temperature was pleasantly warm, hovering around 26°C.

Arriving at the Botanic Garden, I was immediately struck by the tranquility of the place. The garden spans over 40 hectares, preserving around 500 rare plant species and various wildlife. It's a haven of biodiversity, a place where you can truly appreciate the natural beauty of this region. I paid the entrance fee of 40,000 VND and stepped into a world of green.

I decided to follow one of the suggested walking routes, eager to explore the diverse landscapes within the garden. The path led me through dense forests, past sparkling streams, and alongside towering trees. I felt a sense of peace wash over me, a feeling of being completely immersed in nature. I paused frequently to take photos, trying to capture the beauty of the surroundings. My camera has become an extension of myself on this trip, a way of documenting and sharing the wonders I encounter. I even spotted a few vibrant peacocks strutting their stuff, adding a touch of color to the already stunning scenery.

One of the highlights of the Botanic Garden was the Gio Waterfall. It wasn't a massive waterfall, but its serene charm captivated me. The water cascaded down the rocks, creating a soothing melody. I sat for a while, simply listening to the sounds of nature, feeling the gentle breeze on my skin. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of why I love to travel and explore new places.

Continuing my exploration, I stumbled upon Vang Anh Lake. The lake was surrounded by lush vegetation, creating a mirror-like reflection of the sky above. It was a perfect spot for contemplation, a place to gather my thoughts and reflect on my journey so far. I thought about Hans back in Berlin, wondering what he was up to. I imagined him coding away, surrounded by computer screens, a world away from the tranquility of Phong Nha. I smiled, knowing that we both find joy in our respective passions.

As I wandered through the garden, I made a conscious effort to be mindful of my surroundings. I picked up any litter I found, ensuring that I left no trace of my visit. Sustainable travel is important to me, and I believe that it's our responsibility to protect the places we visit. I also made sure to stay on the designated paths, avoiding any disturbance to the delicate ecosystem.

By lunchtime, I had worked up quite an appetite. I decided to head to Nhà Hàng Hải Sản Nhật Phong 3 for a seafood lunch. Although this restaurant seems to be located in Nha Trang, I was still able to find a seafood restaurant in Phong Nha. The restaurant had a lovely view of the river, and I enjoyed watching the boats go by as I waited for my meal. I ordered a plate of grilled prawns and a side of fresh vegetables. The prawns were cooked to perfection, succulent and flavorful. The vegetables were crisp and refreshing, a welcome contrast to the richness of the seafood. It was a delightful meal, a true taste of Vietnamese cuisine.

After lunch, I decided to do a bit of shopping at M2M - Mart. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs for friends and family back home. The mart had a wide selection of local products, from handicrafts to snacks. I carefully selected a few items, making sure to support local artisans and businesses. I found a beautiful hand-woven scarf for my mother and a bag of Vietnamese coffee for Hans. I know he'll appreciate the taste of adventure in his morning cup.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Bamboo Chopsticks for dinner. This restaurant is known for its delicious Vietnamese cuisine and its commitment to sustainability. I ordered a tofu curry with rice, savoring the complex flavors and spices. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and I enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff. It's always a pleasure to connect with locals and learn more about their culture and way of life.

The restaurant also champions sustainability—minimizing plastic use, refilling water for free, and sourcing ingredients locally. It's inspiring to see businesses that are committed to protecting the environment, and it makes me feel good to support them.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to explore Hang Trạ Ang [sic]. I've heard it's an incredible cave, and I'm excited to see it for myself. I'll make sure to pack my camera and my sense of adventure.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful region. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is a true gem, a place where nature reigns supreme. I'm so glad I decided to come here, to immerse myself in its beauty and to connect with its people. This solo journey has been a transformative experience, a chance to learn, to grow, and to appreciate the simple things in life. And as I drift off to sleep, I know that tomorrow will bring even more adventures, more discoveries, and more moments of pure bliss.

And even though I forgot my rain poncho and portable fan [see TripEssentialsForgotten], the weather was pleasant enough to not miss them too much.
