A Day of Discovery in Phong Nha

Today was a day of deep exploration, both of the earth and of the local culture here in Phong Nha. It’s amazing how much one can experience in a single day, from the awe-inspiring grandeur of one of the world's largest caves to the simple pleasures of vegan Vietnamese cuisine. These are the days that remind me why I love to travel, to see new things, taste new flavors, and connect with the world around me.

My day began with an early start, fueled by anticipation and a strong cup of Vietnamese coffee. While a full expedition into Hang Sơn Đoòng wasn't on the cards for today due to the extensive commitment it requires, just knowing I was in the vicinity of such a natural wonder filled me with excitement. It's incredible to think that this cave, hidden within Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, is so large that it has its own ecosystem, even its own weather! Perhaps one day I'll return and embark on the full four-day expedition.

Instead, I decided to dedicate my day to soaking in the atmosphere of Phong Nha, starting with a hearty vegan breakfast at Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant. This charming spot, overlooking the river, is known for its friendly staff and tasty food. I opted for the rainbow vermicelli salad and iced kumquat green tea, a refreshing combination that perfectly captured the local flavors. It was so delicious and fresh. I have to make sure to recreate that salad back in Berlin. It's inspiring to see restaurants like this thrive, offering delicious plant-based options while supporting sustainable practices. This aligns perfectly with my values, reminding me of my own urban gardening work back in Berlin.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in conquering the highest peaks, but in savoring the simplest moments and connecting with the heart of a place.

For lunch, I ventured to ARTIST'S ZONE, a local spot known for its chicken salad, spring rolls, and sandwiches. I chose a vegan Bahn Mi, packed with fresh vegetables and tofu. It was the perfect midday fuel. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the laid-back atmosphere made it easy to strike up conversations with fellow travelers. I even met a couple from the Netherlands who were cycling through Vietnam – their stories of adventure were truly inspiring!

After lunch, I spent some time browsing at Harry's Coconuts. I picked up a few handmade souvenirs. Supporting local artisans is important to me. It's a small way to give back to the community and take home a piece of Phong Nha with me.

As the afternoon sun began to mellow, I decided to embrace the local tradition of enjoying a cold beer. I headed to Pub with cold beer, a quirky establishment located a bit outside the town center. Getting there was an adventure in itself, as the road was quite bumpy, but the scenery was worth it. This pub is famous for its farm-to-table approach, with most ingredients sourced directly from their property. I savored a Huda beer while relaxing in a hammock, soaking in the views of the Bong Lai Valley. The atmosphere was incredibly relaxed. It reminded me a bit of the community gardens Hans and I are involved with back in Berlin – a place where people come together to enjoy simple pleasures and connect with nature.

For dinner, I chose Lantern Vietnamese Restaurant, known for its vegan options and cozy atmosphere. I ordered the lemongrass tofu, which was absolutely divine. The flavors were so vibrant and fresh, a true celebration of Vietnamese cuisine. Chatting with the owners, a local couple with years of experience in the food industry, was a delight. Their passion for sharing their culture through food was truly inspiring.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took a leisurely stroll along the Son River, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the twinkling lights reflecting on the water. Phong Nha has a certain charm that's hard to resist – a blend of natural beauty, local culture, and warm hospitality. I'm so grateful for the experiences of today. It's these moments of connection, with nature, with people, and with myself, that make traveling so rewarding.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to explore En Cave, another of Phong Nha's stunning cave systems. I've heard it's an incredible experience, and I'm excited to see what wonders it holds. I'll also be sure to check out some local shops, like Shop Quỳnh Giang Clothing, and maybe unwind at Victory Road Villas in the evening. It's all about balance, after all – a bit of adventure, a bit of culture, and a bit of relaxation.

As I settle in for the night, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Phong Nha has already exceeded my expectations, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I am also grateful for the technological advances that allow me to share this with you, my readers. It is always fulfilling to share my experiences and inspire others to travel.

The air is fresh, the sounds of the jungle are lulling me to sleep, and I am looking forward to another day of exploration in this beautiful corner of Vietnam. Goodnight from Phong Nha!

The end of a perfect day.

Update on Forgotten Essentials

I'm still missing my rain poncho and portable fan! The humidity is definitely something to be reckoned with, and a sudden downpour is always a possibility this time of year. I will have to keep an eye out for these items tomorrow, hopefully in Shop Quỳnh Giang Clothing! Perhaps I will find something unique and locally made.

Thoughts on Sustainable Travel

Today reinforced my commitment to sustainable travel. Supporting local businesses, like Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant and the artisans at Harry's Coconuts, makes a real difference. Choosing plant-based meals and minimizing my environmental impact are also small but important steps. It's all about being mindful of our choices and making a positive contribution to the places we visit. Perhaps I can bring some of these ideas back to Berlin and share them with my community there.

Reflections on Solo Travel

Traveling solo has allowed me to fully immerse myself in the experiences of Phong Nha. I'm free to follow my own interests, connect with locals, and reflect on my journey without distractions. While I miss Hans, I also appreciate the opportunity to grow and learn on my own. Maybe our next trip can be here.

A Note on Vietnamese Culture

The warmth and hospitality of the Vietnamese people continue to impress me. From the friendly staff at the restaurants to the welcoming locals I met along the way, everyone has been so kind and generous. It's a reminder that human connection is universal, transcending language and cultural barriers.
