Oasis of Calm and Carpets of Wonder

Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of tranquility and the vibrant energy that defines Marrakech. From the serene beauty of Jardin Majorelle to the bustling souks, every moment was a new discovery, a new memory etched into the fabric of our family adventure. It's days like these that make traveling so rewarding, offering a glimpse into the soul of a place and its people.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Le Loft. The French pastries and strong coffee were the perfect start to a day promising both relaxation and exploration. Fatou and I enjoyed the Parisian Lentils with marinated salmon, while Ebrima went for the classic Eggs and mayonnaise. It felt like a little piece of France right here in Marrakech. The cozy atmosphere of Le Loft made it a perfect spot to fuel up before our adventures.

Our first destination was the Musée Berbère Jardin Majorelle. The gardens are a vibrant explosion of color, a sanctuary of exotic plants and striking blue architecture. The famous Majorelle Blue is even more captivating in person, a hue that seems to absorb the very essence of the sky. It was Jacques Majorelle who started creating this garden in 1923, and later Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé worked to restore it. As we walked through the winding paths, surrounded by towering cacti and the gentle murmur of water features, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. It was a welcome escape from the bustling city outside. Ebrima, with his keen eye for photography, was in his element, capturing the unique beauty of the gardens from every angle.

The Musée Berbère itself was a fascinating insight into Berber culture. The collection, started by Pierre Bergé, showcased traditional clothing, jewelry, and artifacts, each telling a story of the Berber people and their rich heritage. I found myself particularly drawn to the intricate jewelry, the craftsmanship reflecting a deep connection to the land and its history. Unfortunately, no photos were allowed inside the museum, but the memories of the stunning displays are etched in my mind.

The beauty of Marrakech lies not only in its grand monuments but also in its hidden corners, where serenity and vibrant culture intertwine.

After immersing ourselves in the beauty and history of Jardin Majorelle, it was time for some much-needed relaxation. We headed to Marrakech Spa & Hammam for a traditional hammam experience. I had heard so much about hammams, and I was eager to experience this essential part of Moroccan culture.

From the moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in an atmosphere of tranquility. The air was thick with the scent of eucalyptus, and the soft lighting created a sense of calm. We were led to a warm, steamy room where we relaxed and let the heat work its magic, opening our pores and preparing our skin for the cleansing ritual to come. Next came the black soap, a traditional Moroccan cleanser made from olive oil and eucalyptus. The attendant expertly scrubbed our bodies with a kessa glove, removing layers of dead skin and leaving us feeling incredibly refreshed. The final step was a relaxing massage with argan oil, known for its moisturizing and nourishing properties. As the masseuse worked her skilled hands over my tired muscles, I felt all the stress and tension melt away. The hammam was truly a rejuvenating experience, a perfect way to cleanse both body and mind. Fatou particularly enjoyed the massage, saying it was the most relaxed she had felt in years. Ebrima, initially hesitant, admitted that he too felt incredibly refreshed afterwards.

Emerging from the hammam, we felt like new people. Our skin was glowing, our bodies were relaxed, and our minds were clear. It was the perfect preparation for the next adventure: shopping in the souks.

For lunch, we ventured to Cuisine De Terroir, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Moroccan dishes. The restaurant lived up to its reputation. I opted for the royal tagine, while Fatou enjoyed an eggplant salad. Ebrima, ever the adventurous eater, tried the vegan soup. Everything was incredibly fresh and flavorful, a testament to the restaurant's commitment to using local ingredients. The staff were friendly and helpful, making us feel welcome and at home. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the warm January sun and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of the city.

Our afternoon was dedicated to exploring the souks, and our main goal was to find a beautiful Moroccan carpet. We ventured into Les Nomades De Marrakech, a store known for its high-quality carpets and excellent service. From the moment we stepped inside, we were transported to a world of color and texture. Carpets of every size, shape, and design were piled high, creating a visual feast for the eyes. Abdul, the store owner, greeted us warmly and patiently guided us through the vast collection. He explained the different types of carpets, the Berber techniques used to create them, and the stories behind the designs. It was fascinating to learn about the history and craftsmanship that goes into each carpet.

We spent hours browsing, touching, and admiring the carpets. Ebrima, with his artistic eye, helped us narrow down the choices, while Fatou focused on the quality and durability of the materials. I was drawn to a beautiful vintage carpet with intricate geometric patterns and rich, earthy tones. It felt like it had a story to tell, a history woven into its very fibers. After much deliberation, we finally made our decision and purchased the carpet. Abdul carefully wrapped it for us, ensuring it would be safe for the journey back to Germany. We were thrilled with our purchase, a beautiful reminder of our time in Marrakech.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the city, we made our way to Restaurant Le Grand Bazar Marrakech for dinner. The restaurant is located in the heart of Place Jemaa el-Fna, and its rooftop terrace offers stunning views of the bustling square. The atmosphere was magical, with the sounds of storytellers, musicians, and food vendors filling the air. The restaurant itself was a feast for the eyes, with its eclectic decor and antique furnishings. It felt like stepping back in time, a journey into the heart of Moroccan culture.

We enjoyed a delicious meal of traditional Moroccan dishes, savoring the flavors and aromas of the local cuisine. The tagine was succulent and flavorful, the couscous light and fluffy, and the mint tea sweet and refreshing. The service was impeccable, the staff attentive and friendly. As we ate, we watched the spectacle of Place Jemaa el-Fna unfold below us, a mesmerizing display of Moroccan life and culture.

Tomorrow, we're planning on taking a hot air balloon ride over Marrakech. I am really looking forward to seeing Marrakech from above. I'm also looking forward to our cooking class with Chef Khmisa. I am eager to learn some new cooking skills from a professional.

The day ended with a sense of contentment and gratitude. We had experienced the best of Marrakech, from its serene gardens and rejuvenating hammams to its vibrant souks and delicious cuisine. It was a day of contrasts, a day of discovery, a day that will forever be etched in our memories.

As I reflect on the day, I realize that the true beauty of Marrakech lies not only in its grand monuments and bustling souks but also in its hidden corners, where serenity and vibrant culture intertwine. It's a city that captivates the senses, nourishes the soul, and leaves you longing to return. And as we prepare for our final days in this magical city, I know that the memories we have created here will stay with us long after we have left.

I am already looking forward to tomorrow, the hot air balloon ride and the cooking class. I am also looking forward to sharing our stories and experiences with you all.

Until then, good night from Marrakech!
